Pitino

A possible silver lining with Red coming back for a year is that it might give GMac enough time to show that he really IS worthy of the SU gig. I've watched some of the Siena games and I think it's safe to say that GMac has built an identity for that team from almost nothing. It'll be interesting to see what they do next year when he has something more to sell recruits and can acquire a few new pieces from the portal. I wouldn't be shocked if they went on a run this year though either.

If that happens, think a successful GMac coming from Siena would be something EVERYONE here would get behind. I was firmly against giving him or Red a shot the first time around, but he appears to be well on his way to proving himself.

Oh, and I have little doubt that the Melo camp would be anything but excited (except sad for Red, as we all are).
We simply would not do that. The next hire will be outside the family whenever that is. The only way I could see our next hire being a GMAC is if Autry turns this program around so good that he leaves for the NBA and hands the keys to Gerry himself. It just feels wrong to fire Autry and hire Gerry. GMAC only path to ever being the head coach at Syracuse is having Roy Williams like success to maybe be the coach after the next coach.

Well, be ready for it.

The bolded part, however, absolutely will not happen. Even if Red did have success, the AD isn't letting a head coach hand the keys to anybody. Not again.

I don't get why it would feel wrong to fire a failed coach for a successful one, if that's the case.

Rick's not coming to SU; St. John's boosters are loaded.

Richard's interesting but I don't think the style of high tempo and no threes (pacing for bottom 30 in 3PA% for the third straight season) that has made him successful at New Mexico would translate to the ACC. There are worse options but I wouldn't be too wild about him.

Nick Saban didn’t do much with my Dolphins but I’d take him to lead the Orange in a heartbeat.
Did Saban remove Don Shula from the organization? Because that’s what Rick did with Red Auerbach.

Did Saban actively antagonize the fan base? Because that’s what Rick did with his infamous “Bird, McHale and Parish aren’t walking through that door” screed.

Did Saban whine incessantly that he wouldn’t have taken the job had he known he wouldn’t get the #1 pick in the lottery? Because that’s what Pitino did.

Did Saban trade the #3 pick in his first draft, Chauncey Billups, for Kenny Anderson? Because that’s what Pitino did.

Pitino was an utter disaster in Boston and a terrible person to boot. He can go screw.

So what’s your solution or should we just pack it in as a program? NIL funds are what they are right now and they’re not going to get any better with Red as the coach, especially with how donors are seeing their current money being spent.
Crazy request...patience. We will be having more money going into this than others have reported on this board. We fell short of what we needed to get a few of the guys we wanted this year obviously. He will be judged closely next year. Why wouldn't you give him a shot with 2 GM's now working in this new world of College garbage? Our recruits look good but we REALLY need to find the right fits and upgrade the talent ( obviously) to add to the new class in order to compete.
You keep putting blame everywhere but where it actually belongs.
You have been found hard to educate and a very bad student. I can only lead you to the water my friend.

We have been patient for the last 10 years as this program has been in a steady decline. Is it too much to ask for the program to again be a tournament team that’s ranked during the regular season and conference play?
I do agree that the portal is huge and more important than high school recruits. Holding out hope that Kline helps here.

Pitino was too old, obviously. No way an old man from a bygone era could right a fallen ship in this new, modern, NIL era.

I didn‘t want him, either, but for other reasons. But if I had the choice back then of Pitino vs an internal hire, i‘d have chosen Pitino. He is a good coach. It is known.

Textbook example of projection.

You're following feelings instead of reacting to objective reality... except to deny it.

If you want to help Red, it would be most productive to just be honest and open about what's going on so that he can be urged to improve and address his weaknesses. Blaming everything under the sun and showing your ignorance of the current landscape isn't doing Red or your own credibility any favors. I get that you have a relationship with the staff and it probably makes you feel really good and it's hard to let that go...

But some of your comments have been among the most ridiculous things I've seen from a poster since I've been part of this group in the 90s. That loss of credibility is permanent, even after Red is canned.

I have absolutely no relationship with anybody on the staff. None of them know me from Adam. I just react to reading stupidity or, basically, most every thought you have on this subject....sorry.

Awww, you don't have to be like that. I do feel your pain, but unlike you, I'm willing to call a spade a spade instead of making wild comments attempting to reshape reality.

I wanted an outside hire, but I was hopeful that Red, one of my all time favorite players at SU, would bring some of the attributes and attitude that I loved so much from his time as a player to the team. It hasn't happened. Like. At all.

Some of us actually have worked in and have firsthand knowledge of these dynamics, and are not just shooting from the hip. We can disagree here and that's fine, but some of your comments betray a lack of knowledge and experience actually dealing with these issues firsthand. Comment after comment tells the board that you don't have a clue, which makes you try even harder, which just leads to the loop that you are still stuck in. Petty insults such as the above make that clear even to more casual readers.

My apologies; I had thought that you mentioned having inside knowledge from the staff at some point. Your level of loyalty could make Red's wife jealous.

We all want the same thing, in theory. Some of us just have the guts to confront the ugly truth.

Serious question. Based on what you have seen, What does Autry do well? The answer to that question is why no one has patience.
