PITT Postgame

Solid win! Improved closing out the game against Pitt from Georgia Tech, can still get better with that (hopefully we have many more times with that situation up double digits in the second half) William Kyle, I have no words. Donnie Freeman with the ball in his hands in big moments seems to be a must. We lose this lead last season. Pitt is not good, but they actually fought hard and played particularly well. It's minute by minute with this team, but when they are clicking they are as dangerous as anyone in College Basketball.

Solid win, even moreso than Georgia Tech.
-Donnie changes everything. Obviously the scoring and shooting is huge. But when the ball goes through him the offense flows. Bad possessions can be saved late in the shot clock. He moves the ball with thought and poise. Nitpick is he needs to be meaner and more convicted when securing the ball after rebounds. But what a program changer. I wish we made a little bit more effort to get it to him in the low post instead of giving the defense more time to throw multiple guys at him.
-Terrific first half for JJ. Took good shots and had some great assists. Defense was sound. Not as good in second half but still played well overall.
-George on the other hand was excellent in the first half and poor in the second. What was that running 1 on 3 shot. Some inexcusable turnovers.
-as I said on the game chat it is not recency bias or hyperbole to say Kyle’s dunk was one of the best we’ve ever had for our program. He should’ve played more in the second half particularly after he sat so much in the first half with foul trouble.
-nice to see Betsey get set up for threes.
-Kingz d was surprisingly lacking.
-Kiyan didn’t force and had a nice assist though he struggled on d.
-Great to win on road by 11 as a dog. Need to take care of business and keep stacking wins. Good win.

Good to get 2 road wins this week, even if they were against the bottom of the conference. Although in fairness to Georgia Tech they’ve been pretty pesky lately.

Need another 2 wins this week with decent margin of victories. If that happens I’ll allow myself a little bit of optimism this team can get back into the bubble discussion at some point this season.

The Good: we can build big leads vs inferior teams on the road

The Bad: we struggle to hold onto those leads due to questionable in game changes by Red and poor ball control from George
the late game offensive approach is extremely ill-advised

they get away from everything that got them the lead in the first place...hold the ball until late in the clock and throw up an iso prayer is a losing strategy

pitt had no business being within 20 pts late in this game

Too many HOF caliber coaches on this board that forget there are two teams out there. It did get a bit dicey for a few minutes there. The refs swallowed the whistle and Pitt kept clutching and grabbing (what did they have to lose). We stopped scoring for a few minutes. In that same time, Cummings made 3-4 incredible plays. That’s sport. That’s not bad coaching.

That the players stopped playing intense defense has little to do with Red. It's on the PLAYERS.

From an Xs and Os standpoint point sure. But no player that really respects their coach just stops playing as ours does. That is on the coach. They may like Red, but by not giving effort for 40 minutes on defense shows the disrespect.

Also the offense stalling out at the end of games is 1000000% on the coach.

POSITIVE
  • 3 point shooting shows this teams ability to dominate.
  • our Short Center (WK )
  • Donnie Freeman
  • Win on the road
Negative
  • STUPID TURNOVERS ( 2nd half is a good example). No one wants the rebound, Donnie gets a steal/ rebound and is unable to handle pressure. Our PG making bad choices when we are making a run
  • We had an 18 point lead and gave it away by not having basketball smarts.

Never take your foot off the gas when you're pummeling a team and increasing your lead. In the 1st half we were having our way and then Red makes wholesale substitutions taking out Kyle, Donnie and George and presto ... the run stops and Pitt starts cutting the deficit.
#1 Coaching Rule -- Don't break your own momentum during a run.
But we did enough things right to hold on at the end for the win. So used to getting bullied by Pitt so this was a nice change.

I don't know if it's effort or more the questionable combinations that Red goes to during the game.
Sometimes Red is his own worst enemy.

Maybe effort is the wrong word, but it is like a lack of focus and attention to detail that they have for the first 25-30 minutes of the game

There is a real letdown in defense when Kiyan and Tyler come in. They are our two best bench scorers but they have a lot to learn defensively. Hats off to Cummings he was exceptional today.

Red’s substitutions are baffling. Betsey NEEDED more 2nd half run today. He has no feel for who has the hot hand.

I also don’t understand why Kingz and Betsey cannot be on the floor together. Not sure it’s happened once this year

Couldn't watch the game and won't be able to until late tonight but some improved stats in the box score. Free throw shooting was 83%. 45% from three. George with 7 assists (6 turnovers is suspect though.) I look forward to watching later.

There is a gift for you at the beginning of the second half, plan accordingly.
