Pittsburgh was ranked #7 and #10 by Pomeroy and Sagarin and #20/#22 by the writers and the coaches and yet they were given an 8 seed, meaning the committee considered them to be somewhere in the #29-32 range. They seemed like an obvious pick to win their 8-9 game against Wichita State, ranked #33/#42 by P-S with 5 votes in the writer’s poll. In fact, with their years of frustration in the NCAA tournament, I figured the Panthers were due for a good run so I had then beating Gonazga and Wisconsin and losing to Ohio State in the regional final. Instead they were completely outplayed by the Shockers, who cruised to an easy 73-55 win.
We’ve certainly had our ups and downs in the NCAAs over the years. But how would like to have the Panther’s record in their current era of success?

2013 record after the BET: 24-8. Ranking in the writer’s and coach’s polls: #20/#22. NCAA seeding: #8

Overall NCAA record in that time: 14 wins 11 losses. Farthest advance: one Elite 8.
Expected wins based on seeding and ranking in Final Four: 23-11 with two final fours.
In their total history Pittsburgh has been to the NCAA tournament 24 times. They’ve made it to one Final Four, in 1941. It wasn’t actually a “Final Four” then as the tournament just had Eastern and Western regionals with the winners meeting for the title game. The first real “Final Four” wasn’t until 1952.
