Pittsburgh ticket sales

There was just an article at the PS the other day that said SU is well ahead on attendance from the past couple years. They projected the biggest numbers since 2002-03.

If we're making a fair comparison, it wouldn't be between attendance in a potentially very good season (in which we're #1 for an extended period) and a decade in which we had more than a few disappointing teams.

Of course we're running ahead this year. For starters, ticket brokers bought SU tickets in record numbers prior to this year. Our big three second semester weekend games this year are West Virginia, Connecticut, and Louisville (last year they were Villanova, Rutgers, and DePaul). That's good for a significant bump.

My point is that 23,000 for the last Saturday evening game before the semester begins is a poor crowd for Syracuse (another comparison: our home game on that same day last year, against Cincinnati with an unpopular noon start time, drew 1,000 more people than Providence did on Saturday).

One would think that as many people as have come to the big weeknight games in recent years (as someone else noted, over 26,000) would want to show up to see the #1 team play Pittsburgh. It's anything but a run-of-the-mill Monday night game, but it looks like we'll have a pretty run-of-the-mill crowd.

If 26 shows, your drinks are on me. Where'd you get that number? That'd be terrific.

We had 25,000 for Marquette. Pitt is a much bigger rival. The place will be plenty full and plenty loud tonight, trust me.

Bitching about the crowd and saying "how many would Kentucky draw if they had a Dome" is lame. What kind of numbers would we draw if the Dome were located in the middle of an actual parking lot, and people didn't have to walk up a cliff to get to the arena? What if we had really good bus service ? (What if we gave away free beer???)

Agreed. Attendance is up enough that I made a post yesterday spectulating whether we might catch Kentucky and led the country in attendance this year (we are going to come closer than we have in a while but it isn't likely to happen).

FYI, there is a winter weather advisory for tonight. Looks like we could get some heavy snow starting around 6 PM. Right now it is 0 degrees and -12 with the wind chill factor. To get above 25K, we need help from places like Rochester, Binghamton and Utica. Some of those folks might be discouraged by the troubling forecast.

My how time changes things. In 1981 I remember ppl this time of the year going crazy because we had 23000 at a home game vs St. John's. I hate to say it but I think TV does enter into it. Why brave this temperature and $4 beer when you got heat, the tube and a fridge next to you.

$4 beer? Where?

This made me laugh.
$4.00 beer? Guess you haven't braved the weather in quite some time.
I have not but I am going to tonite. Wish me luck!
