The play that started the whole fight club thing.

This I get 5 wide, single safety. hard to see at the bottom but left side slot slides out, top 3 guys run go routes. as do the bottom 2.

safety stays with the 3 wide group and this makes sense he cant cover both sides of the field. ball is underthrown and leads to an Int. had ball been thrown to the Estime it had a chance as he had a good step

The play design I dont get is that this allows 1 safety to cover 3 guys. I would be fascinated to ask the coach if thats the way this route is supposed to be run. I would think someone is supposed to cross in front of the safety. If phillips goes to the post the safety almost has to honor it leaving room for a skinny post to Estime. If Estime runs a cross under Phillips with a chasing DB the safety will still stay with Phillips and then Estime is wide open with a trailing DB and its probably a simple score. It also makes me wonder if the correct read is to the of the safety, since now you have Etta with no safety on the low side. Love to see 5 vertical with a single high though, its a very aggressive pattern.

I know that Dungey thought he had a free play, but he made a horrible read. He should have thrown it to AET or Ish.

As to your question, they were in man with cover 1. The O doesn't know that when the play is sent in. It is the QB's job to recognize it. If they were in cover 3, then SU has just flooded the zone and that 1 S is covering 2 guys which is umpossible. That 2nd slot (Estime?) would be open. It is what ND did to us all day.

thats my point. I think he throws to AET, or he throws to ISH (who was well covered) or he throws to Estime. Phillips should have been the last one to throw to and if the play design has Phillips run a post it opens up Estime even more. Thats why I wonder if the players ran the right routes even if Dungey threw to the wrong WR, two guys 3-4 yrs apart makes it easy for the safety.

that's well and good, but there's no way Babers is going to answer specific questions as to play design and whether or not players ran the correct route on a particular play - and nor should he.

yeah but he may in a less open setting. i remember some of the old regime discussing the number of plays that certain plays did their job correctly and the how the players were grading out. some coaches even have events where they review game film.

This is the type of play that when we run it against the D should work every time.

I miss Coach's Corner with Coach Mac.

some schools still have them or at least something like it.

Nikos Thursday night thing could be so much better if a little more focus in the nuts and bolts was used. Conley and DR break down some film but its glossed over so fast you cant learn anything and thats too bad.

i dont know what the numbers say as to whether people watch it and how much it costs to produce, but it doesnt need to be so helter skelter and out of control to be way better and have more value. an hr would allow for a way better product but even a half hour just reviewing 5-10 plays with real analysis would be nice and that part could be done in 5-10 min and remove the fluff that is poorly done.. Conley can break plays down pretty well and sometimes your hear him comment on the mistakes he sees but he never gets enough time..

come on Niko we know you are listening. lets make the show better
