Cumberlands held on to beat perennial power Carroll 34-27 in overtime. The back and forth contest in which only once did either team have a 10 points lead, (Cumberlands saw a 20-10 advantage quickly turn into a 20-24 deficit), ended in the first overtime. The Patriots scored on a 12 yard pass from Adam Craig to Iquan Deed on Cumberlands’ possession. Then the Saints, after getting to the Cumberlands 8, completed what appeared to be a tying pass in the back of the end zone. But there was holding, then a false start, then a catch that was ruled a trap and finally, a sack as Saints quarterback Dakota Stonehouse was swarmed under when the pocket collapsed around him. Stonehouse, who had set a school record with 2600 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, was sacked 5 times and held to 13 for 27 for 197 yards and 1 touchdown. Patriot quarterback Craig out-performed him with 165 yards and two scores, one a 63 yarder. He was 7 for 11 passing for 98 yards and the winning score.
Grand View shut out Morningside, the highest scoring team in the division, 35-0. Now they will have a grand view of the championship game. The Mustangs were missing Ryan Kasdorf, their starting quarterback and it showed. They normally average 576 yards and 49 points a game. In this one they got 245 and zero. The Vikings gained 469 yards, 312 through the air as Derek Fulton three for 2 scores. AZ three touchdown second quarter gave them a 28-0 halftime lead and they coasted the rest of the way.
The Finals will be held December 21, 2013, 4:30PM at, Barron Stadium in Rome, GA. On ESPN 3. The match-up:
CUMBERLANDS (Kentucky) 13-0 (593-255) #1, 5-6 (0)
Vs.
GRAND VIEW (Iowa) 13-0 (488-192) #2, 2-1 (0)
Comment: Neither team has ever won a national championship before. But then, 86% of those who have in the NAIA have jumped to the NCAA. Cumberlands is the #1 team but Grand View looked more impressive in the semi-finals, even if Morningside was missing its quarterback. The Vikings beat both of last year’s finalists, having topped Marian of Indiana, last year’s champions, 30-7 back on 9/21. The teams have no common opponents. Cumberlands has outscored its opponents by an average of 46-20, out0rushed them by 359-134 abut been out-passed by 120-215. Grand View has outscored their opponents by an average of 38-15, out-rushed them 212-120 and out-passed them 247-181. I’m inclined to go with the better defensive team. Shutting out a team that had been averaging almost 50 points a game was pretty impressive, despite the injury to their quarterback. I think the Vikings will have a grand view of the championship trophy when the clock reaches zero.
