SECOND ROUND

The Mount Union of the 60’s and 70’s hung with the Mount Union of today for a while as the Wittenberg Tigers were tied with the Purple Raiders, 14-14 after one quarter and down only 14-21 at halftime. The second half was a different story as the defending champs cruised to a 56-21 win. Mount Union gained 601 yards, 275 on the ground and 326 through the air. Kevin Burke threw for 5 touchdowns. Wittenberg actually passed for more than Mount Union, 327-326 but could only muster 36 yards rushing. Wittenberg, under Bill Edwards and Dave Maurer, was 227-43-7 from 1955-1983. Mount Union, under Ken Wable, Larry Kehres and now Larry’s son Vince, are 382-25-3 since 1985.

#2 Linfield bounced back from a 10-21 halftime deficit against upset-minded Hampden-Sydney to win 31-21. The visitor’s quarterback, Nash Nance, (Nash Nance?) threw for 303 yards in the first half, throwing for two scores and running for one. Turnovers turned the game around, two fumbles and a failed fake punt seeing up three Linfield TDs in the second half, a the clincher coming on a fumble by Nance in his own end zone. The key was the Wildcats defense, who held Nance to 5 completions for 33 yards in the second half. The tigers still outgained for the game, 415-375 but still came up short on the scoreboard.

Rowan, (they used to be Glassboro State), used to be a big power in this division in the 90’s, gong to five title games. They lost all of them and have been trying to get back ever since. Not this year. They went down hard to #3 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 8-59. Rowan actually scored first, (a kick was blocked and they got a second half safety). It was never a game. The “Cru, (Crusaders), led 35-6 at the half, outgaining the “Profs”, (professors), 525-209. I guess it was a victory of religion over academics. Zach Anderson threw for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 116 more. Elijah Hudson ran for 136 yards and a score.

Wisconsin-Whitewater has had a great deal of success over the years in the DIII playoffs. Wisconsin Platteville thought they could do something similar. They were wrong. North Central built up a 21-3 first quarter lead and coasted to a 52-24 win. The Cardinals gained 596 yards, 332 on the ground and 274 in the air. Ryan Kent ran for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns from 14, 24, 60 and 27 yards out. Spencer Stanek completed 19 of 24 passes for 274 yards and 3 scores, one of them an 83 yarder.

Whitewater, meanwhile, had no problems beating Franklin, 33-3, although, strangely, they were outgained 293-301. They did it on turnovers and the ability to close drives. Franklin threw an interception on their second play and the Warhawks cashed in with a scoring drive. Two second period drives produced another 10 points. A blocked punt led to a third period score and an interception was returned 41 yards for a touchdown to cap off the scoring, the third pick of the day for Brady Greywold. Franklin had several drives in the Whitewater territory fizzle out.

Bethel won a 34-27 thriller over Wartburg, answering a tying touchdown that came with 3:20 left with the winner, a 24 yard pass from Tom Keefe to Brand Marquard with 1:18 left. Keefe had replaced an injured Eric Peterson in the third quarter. 33 of the game’s 61 points were scored in the final quarter, after none had been scored in the first. Wartburg led only briefly: scoring a TD at 12:38 of the 4th to make it 20-17. Matt Mehlhorn returned a blocked extra point 98 yards for a two point score Keefe hit Schultz from 56 yards out three minutes later to take the lead back for good. Both team’s offenses were productive, Bethel winning the yardage battle 472-457. Logan Schrader passed for 347 yards and 2 scorers for the losers. Donald Miller had 5 catches for 142 yards and 2 score. Keefe and Peterson combined for 387 yards and 3 scores. Schultz had 4 catches for 193 yards and 2 scores.

Two of the three New York State hopes in the tournament, Hobart and St. John Fisher, had to play each other. Surprisingly it was the Statesmen, who had been the dominant New York team over the last two seasons, that went down, having been thoroughly out-played by the Cardinals, 6-27. They had three turnovers that produced 17 points but were also outgained, 241-354.Tyler Fenti passed for 241 yards and 2 scores for the winners. Hobart’s only score came with 57 seconds left in the game, way too little and way too late. And the missed the extra point. Not a good day in Geneva.

Ithaca, the other New York hope, got beat by Wesley, 15-23. The Bombers couldn’t handle the Wolverines’ ferocious, which recorded 7 sacks and 11 tackles for a loss, “holding” them to -50 yards rushing and 182 yards overall while Wesley gained 380. Ithaca’s only answer until the final minutes was a 91 yard kick-off return for Sam Carney. Jamar Banyard rushed for 102 yards and 2 scores for the winners.

The Quarterfinal pairings:

WESLEY (Delaware) 10-2 (365-227) #15, 20-9 (0) at

MOUNT UNION (Ohio) 12-0 (583-167) #1, 79-12 (11)

LINFIELD (Oregon) 11-0 (568-141) #2, 33-20 (4) at

WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 12-0 (457-90) #5, 36-7 (4)

ST. JOHN FISHER (New York) 10-2 (387-230) #25, 9-4 (0) at

MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR (Texas) 12-0 (592-148) #3, 22-11 (0)

NORTH CENTRAL (Illinois) 12-0 (558-164) #4, 10-8 ((0) at

BETHEL of Minnesota 12-0 (514-186) #6, 9-7 (0)

Comment: I’m not sure why two of the higher ranked teams were sent on the road for the quarterfinals. The NCAA website doesn’t list seedings in their bracket. But perhaps Whitewater and Bethel were seeded higher than Linfield and North Central. Wesley is the feisty sort of team that could give Mount Union some trouble. They lost to them 7-24 in 2009 and 21-28 in 2011. Linfield and Whitewater make a strong match-up. The Wildcats were the country’s highest scoring team while the Warhawks seem fully back in the form that got them three championships in a row before last year’s off season. I doubt St. John Fisher will do anything with “The Cru”. North Central and Bethel is another good match-up but I’d be surprised to see either team in the title game.
