THE FINALS
Jacksonville State came into the game with a season long #1rnaking and a 12 game winning streak. They’d averaged 54 points a game win their three playoff games leading up to the final. But it meant nothing when they were looking at North Dakota State across the line of scrimmage. The Bison defense totally shut down the Gamecock offense, shutting them out in the first half and giving up just ten points in the second half after the only big offensive play they surrendered, a 46 yard run by quarterback Eli Jenkins to the NDS 9 and an interception that was returned to the 11. The Bison defense only let the Gamecocks get to the 9 in three plays and held them to a field goal that the Bison matched on their next possession. That was really the clincher: it kept the game in Bison control and ensured there wasn’t going to be a comeback. Meanwhile the Bison offense was steady, putting on long drives to build up a 24-0 halftime lead and add another 10 points at the end after the exchange of field goals. Their defense also forced four turnovers, including two late in the game in a stretch of three straight plays where there were turnovers. They outgained the normally explosive Gamecocks 379-204.
The final was 37-10, NDS’s 20th consecutive post season win and 5th straight national championship, an unheard of achievement. It was also the schools’ 13th national championship in their history, a record for the small colleges. You might think it’s time for them move up into FBS, (which would tend to put an end to their championship history). But, ironically, only one of these five championships have been won by an undefeated team. FCS team’s records are often deceiving because they play against FBS teams for the guarantees. But all of NDS’s 5 losse4s in the last five years have been to FCS teams. They are an FCS, just a very, very good one. And they illustrate the adage that good teams get better as the season progresses: nobody can beat them when they get into the tournament. They’ve done it with multiple classes and with two different coaches in this streak, (Craig Bohl, who won the first three titles went onto Wyoming, where he’s been pretty much of a flop.) This is bigger than any individual or any group of individuals and there’s no telling how long this will go on.
