FIRST ROUND and SECOND ROUND MATCH-UPS

Remember Stony Brook? They are good again and romped over Lehigh in the first round of the FCS playoffs. “Joe Carbone threw for 268 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Stony Brook's four running backs together gained 361 more with six touchdowns in a 59-29 defeat of Lehigh in the opening round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.”

It got them a date with defending national champion and #1 ranked James Madison, who is looking to repeat.

The Second Round Match-Up:

Both lost first round games by 39 points. “Eli Dunne threw for 260 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, Nikholi Jaghai caught two of Northern Iowa’s four interceptions, and the Panthers cruised past Monmouth 46-7 in the first round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.”

Kennesaw State survived a weak second half with the strength of their first half performance. At halftime of their 28-17 win over Samford, (who had defeated them 23-28 during the regular season), they had gained 327 yards, 267 on the ground and scored 3 touchdowns. In the second half they gained 62 yards, all on the ground but a pick 6 sealed the deal for them:

A lot of people don’t like video reviews of referee’s calls, especially as long as they take. “It may have been the longest 34 seconds in Nicholls State football history. Trailing by a touchdown with 34 seconds remaining in Saturday’s FCS Division I playoff game against South Dakota, Nicholls quarterback Chase Fourcade ran from the Coyotes’ 4-yard line to about the 6-inch line on fourth down. Whether or not it was enough for a first down was under review — as were any hopes the Colonels had of tying the game at 38. Finally, the officials announced it was enough, and the Colonels had new life. But two plays later as Kyran Irvin tried to cross the goal line with 20 seconds left, the ball came out and South Dakota appeared to recover in the end zone. The officials reviewed that play too, taking several minutes to confirm the decision, giving the Coyotes the 38-31 win and breaking the Colonels’ hearts.”

South Dakota will now play another playoff perennial, Sam Houston State, who had the bye, (unless they are reviewing something else).

The Second Round Match-Up:

Donovan Perryman blocked the potential game-tying extra point with 11:26 remaining and Furman's defense made it stand in helping the 22nd-ranked Paladins clip 15th-ranked Elon, 28-27, in Football Championship Subdivision first round playoff action Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium.

They will play Wofford, who had the bye. I think the south must lead the nation in schools with one word titles that aren’t named after states or cities. Furman, Elon, Wofford, Lipscomb, Liberty, Winthrop, Radford, Campbell, Towson, Marshall, Vanderbilt, Rice, Tulane, Belmont, Mercer, Samford, Lamar, Nicholls, McNeese, Troy, etc. etc. (I hear Etcetera is pretty good.)

The Second Round Match-Up:

FURMAN 8-4 (414-283) rank: #25 record: 19-15 (1)
Lost to Wofford 23-24, Elon 31-34 and North Carolina State 16-49
At
BYE – WOFFORD 9-2 (296-239) rank: #9 record: 9-11
Lost to Samford 21-24 and South Carolina 10-31

San Diego, (not San Diego State, who once would have been in this division, or UCal San Diego, which does not have a football team), used a dominating first quarter defense to take command of their game against Northern Arizona and went on to win it, 41-10. The Lumberjacks suffered from dull axes as they ‘gained’ -29 yards in four first quarter possessions, falling behind 0-17.
Lawrence, San Diego beat N. Arizona 41-10 in FCS Playoffs

They will play division super power North Dakota State, who had their run of 5 consecutive championships, (and all-divisions record), stopped in the semi-finals last year by James Madison. I’m sure the Bison want another shot at the Dukes but that would come in the title game the way brackets are set up so for now they have to deal with the Toreros.

The Second Round Match-Up:

SAN DIEGO 10-2 (470-189) rank: unranked record: 1-3
Lost to California-Davis 7-35 and Princeton 17-27 - Yes, Princeton!
At
BYE- NORTH DAKOTA STATE 10-1 (429-135) rank: #4 record: 55-14 (13)
Lost to South Dakota State 21-33
