QUARTERFINALS

#8 Southern Oregon won another shoot-out with #1 Carroll of Montana, the rubber match in this case, as these teams played twice during the regular season. All three games were high scoring and close.

On September 6, they met at Ashland, Oregon with the Raiders wing 38-35. Strangely, there was no scoring in the fourth period, so the winning touchdown was a 22 yard pass from Austin Hodge to Victor Dean with seconds left in the third. The Saints penetrated to the SOU 29 yard line with three minutes left but a sack and fumble ended that drive. Carroll, winners of 13 of the last 14 Pioneer conference championships , led 35-24 midway through the third quarter after a 90 yard drive with the second half kick-off, their third straight score after falling behind 14-24. But the Raiders came back with two scores of their own and blanked the Saints in their last three possessions, blocking a field goal, sweating out a missed field goal and forcing the fumble to end it. They out-gained Carroll 561-468, led by running back Melvin Mason, who rushed for 202 yards and 2 scores. Dodge passed for 281 yards and three scores. Dustin Rinker ran for 147 yards and a score for Carroll. Mac Roche passed for 272 yards and 3 scores, two to Anthony Clarke who caught 115 yards worth of passes.

The rematch came on October 18 in Helena and this time Carroll triumphed, 42-20. After the fourth quarter shut-out in the first one, half of this game’s 82 points came in the final stanza. Carroll came in leading 28-13. Mason went over form the 1 with 13:06 left to make it 28-20. Rinker then bolted 66 yards to push it to 35-20 with 11:38 left. Dodge passed to Ryan Retzlaff from 16 yards out with 8:03 left to make it 35-27. Rinker responded with a 1 yard plunge at 4:51 to put his team ahead 42-27. Mason went over from the 8 with 2:01 left to close it to 42-34. The Riders recovered an onsides kick and scored again when Dodge passed 21 yards to Dylan Young with 22 seconds left. But another Dodge pass failed on the two point conversion attempt, leaving Southern Oregon still behind 40-42. Another onsides kick also failed and Carroll survived this one. They also had a yardage edge in this one, 532-494. Mason got 105 yards and 2TDs while Rinker had 201 yards and 2 scores. Dodge passed for 356 yards and 3 scores while Roche had 281 yards and 3 scores. Retzlaff, (no mention of a relationship to Pete) had 11 catches for 182 yards and 2 scores. Clarke had 8 catches for 140 yards and a score.

That set the stage for last Saturday’s rubber match, also in Helena. Again, Carroll went into the fourth quarter with a substantial lead, this time 35-18. But this time they couldn’t answer enough of Southern Oregon’s fourth quarter scores. Dodge passed 43 yards to Dylan Young at 14:51 and then ran the two point conversion in to make it 26-35. Mason scored form 6 yards out at 7:55 to tighten it up further at 33-35. They then took the lead as Sean McShane caught a 36 yard pass from Dodge. A conversion pass failed but it was 39-35 with 4:38. Carroll finally responded when Mac Roche ran over the goal line from 5 yards out with 1:38 left. A kick made it 42-39. For the second straight of these games, Southern Oregon scored with 22 seconds left, Melvin Mason going over form the one. The kick was no good, leaving the Raiders vulnerable. Mason only rushed for 51 yards but scored 4 times. Rinker rushed for 177 yards and 2 scores. Austin Dodge passed for 470 yards and 3 scores. Mac Roche had 287 yards and 1 score. Ryan Retzlaff had 13 catches for 175 yards but didn’t score. Neither did his brother matt, who had 6 catches for 103 yards. But Dylan Young had 5 catches for 106 yards and he did score twice. Anthony Clarke had 6 catches for 102 yards while Kyle Griffith had 6 catches for 130 yards and also didn’t score.

The game was played in a snowstorm, but it made no difference to the teams who had their highest score of the series and the most yards with SOU outgaining Carroll 660-453.

A summary of this amazing series:

Cumulative Line Score:
Carroll 21 56 21 21 = 119
So. Oregon 16 26 27 54 = 123

For Southern Oregon, Melvin Mason carried the ball 60 times in the three games for 358 yards and 9 touchdowns. Austin Dodge completed 83 of 129 passes (64.3%) for 8 touchdowns with only a single interception. Ryan Retzlaff caught 32 passes for 449 yards and 2 scores.

For Carroll, Dustin Rinker carried 81 times for 509 yards and 5 scores. Mac Roche completed 59 passes 844 yards and 7 scores, also with just one interception. Anthony Clarke caught 19 passes for 357 yards and 2 scores.

Football like it ought to be!!!

#2 ranked Grand View, the defending NAIA champions, also lost, going down hard to Marian, 6-34. But it wasn’t a shocker as Marian had also won their regular season match-up, 31-17. 65-23 is pretty convincing. The Knights forced four turnovers, three of them interceptions. “Marian quarterback Hayden Northern continued his consistent play in the playoffs, recording 258 yards passing and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Anthony Jones Jr. tied his career-high with nine catches for 135 yards.” (NAIA.org) Tevin Lake rushed for 95 yards to push his career total to 5,128.

St. Xavier beat Lindsay Wilson, 30-17. Saint Xavier quarterback John Rhode threw for 298 yards and a season-best four touchdowns, breaking a strong of three straight 400 yard passing games.

Morningside doubled up Missouri Valley, 56-28. The Mustangs rolled up 711 yards of total offense, 396 on the ground. It was their fifth 700 yard game of the season. MV gained 424 yards, which was their highest output of the year. But it was uncompetitive. Brando Wehger rushed for 311 yards and also caught a 75 yard touchdown pass for the winners. Quarterback Kasforf passed for 315 yards and 5 touchdowns. That’s hard to compete with.

The semi-final match-ups:

SOUTHERN OREGON 11-2 (568-356), lost to Carroll 40-42 and Eastern Oregon 27-31. Ranked #8, post season record 7-6 (0 titles) at
ST. XAVIER (Ill) 10-2 (457-299), lost to Robert Morris 24-27 and Grand View 37-41, ranked #3, post season record: 15-7 (1 title)

MARIAN (Ind) 10-2 (403-211), lost to St. Xavier 38-65 and Robert Morris 7-20. Ranked #7, post season record: 9-2 (1 title) at
MORNINGSIDE (iowa) 11-1 (700-227), lost to Doane 48-49, ranked #4, post season record: 14-10 (0 titles)

Comment: It’s too bad Southern Oregon can’t play Carroll again but St. Xavier, the 2011 champs, should give them a good game. Marian beat Morningside in the 2012 title game, (30-27 in OT), and whipped last year’s champs twice so they are formidable. But you’ve got to respect a team that has scored 700 points.
