Postgame Thoughts… Duke game 2

Brent Axe seems like someone that isn’t very smart.
i mean looking from the outside in and just looking at buddy as an individual separate from his team's context...he has all the "stats"

this is a problem with how american media and culture evaluates athletes generally.

this is paert of the reason players like john wall and russel westbrook are making over 4omil this season...despite making their teams considerably worse

the system is telling players to play the way buddy does cuz thats what it rewards///

If I as JB I would want buddy getting as much practice as possible being a volume shooter to prep him for the pro ball...

oh wait...

I just watched Coach K’s postgame and the pregame Coach K scholarship. What a great tribute to the greatest of all time in college basketball as a coach. It was a special moment.

I’ve had my share of criticism on Coach Boeheim but I’m glad he clearly wants to come back next year and right the ship.

It’s both. If you have freakish athletes they should be playing m2m as a base defense but still grasp basic zone concepts.
I agree with that. I like to see defenses switched during a game so the other team takes time to adjust.

I want to see him go out with a more successful season than this year’s disaster.

We have a bunch of outside shooters who as a group are one dimensional and lack athleticism. Its not a winning formula.

Plus, we don't really run much of an offense. If we set more picks, more ball screens, ran better sets, this could have been a hell of a team.

Turning Buddy into Tyus Battle wasn’t a winning basketball decision. That’s what JB did this season.

Last year most of his points came on catch and shoot scenarios or one and two dribbles. This isolation garbage is always garbage unless it’s Carmelo or a Jonny Flynn. We have a good shooter taking garbage shots.

Even Billy Owens wasn't good enough at 1-on-1 in the last 15 seconds. His last year, we went out on him going one-on-one at the end of the Big East Tournament, and the same thing in the first round of the NCAAs. Just as bad as the timeout that never was against Arkansas.

Swider plays like he's 6'2" - I just can't see a guy like that taking up a frontcourt spot and being a component of a good team.

And Girard...it's just hard to see it. Pair him with a good point guard (is that a realistic possibility) and move him off the ball, he can do some nice things on offense. But after three years of reinforcing bad habits on mediocre teams, would he still be the guy who forces off-balance 25-footers because he hasn't taken a shot in awhile, dribbles the ball of his leg two times a game, and plays no defense at all? I don't know.

I guess why bother, then. Maybe when we're a new program.

i agree...the ingredients were there..the recipe was off

Since Iverson was there, I think Mike and Donna should have asked Iverson and JB into the same room to discuss "PRACTICE".

In Buddy's defense, we were getting him open shots off of motion, so it made sense to use his size to shoot over people.

But once people started matching SFs on him, his assist numbers should have gone through the roof, but they did not.

Swider is a much better version of Ryan Blackwell, and that 2000 team had the national champs, Mich State, down by about 20 points on their home floor in the Sweet 16. I take a player like that any day on my team.

Girard as the 2 is a far better version of Trevor Cooney. I think that's completely fair to say. Joe shot 41% so far this year having to still play most of the time as PG.

Speaking of the Coon Dog, anyone else get that Cooney feeling when Buddy almost got that steal and took it the other way?

Agreed. I think Trevor Cooney is vastly underrated and under appreciated. He was very good defensively, and the reports of his offensive ineptitude are greatly exaggerated. JMHO
I was in the bamahas as watched him defend vs 3 top 25 teams from the front row...(I think it was, at worst, it was 3 really good teams).

comparing him to Joe on defense, it’s not close

Agree. Never really questioned Trevor's effort

The only thing Joe does better than the coon dog is shoot from the 3. In every other aspect Coon Dog is exponentially better than Joe.

You don't think that Cooney's defense was helped by having (1) a 6-7 PG next to him with terrific athleticism to take the more athletic guard on the other team, and (2) shot-blocking centers like Baye Keita and Rak Christmas behind him?

Doesn’t matter. Individually he was eons better than what we have now. Put Buddy and/or JG3 on that team, and they still suck. Can you imagine Buddy or JG3 making that tiptoe, sideline pass interception in the Sweet 16 vs Gonzaga? Which should’ve rightfully ended that game right then? Not in a million years.
