Today was the third practice I attended this year, and, in my opinion, it was very different from the first two. JB was much more directly involved. Rather than intently observing ..and making suggestions (e.g., substitutions) as the assistants were coaching teams in the scrimmage, he was directly running the scrimmage, in the most animated way. I guess the real season is about to start
The most interesting thing to me today may be of no interest to anyone else, but I loved it. There is a 90-year-old nun from the Rochester area who loves SU basketball and JB, and she has been his penpal for several years (they had never met). He has invited her to practice, but she never attended until today. She arrived in a wheelchair, accompanied by some other members of her Order.
He spent so much much time with her before practice started, answering questions, posing for pictures and signing things. Then, during practice, whenever she waved at him, he smiled and waved back. For those who have never been at practice, this may not sound like much...but, trust me, no one ever makes small talk or interferes with his focus during practice. It was so lovely how much attention he gave her. There were no media or cameras there. He was not doing this as a "photo op.". He was doing it to create what a 90-year-old Nun pronounced "the best day of my life."
And for those who may be wondering, JB is not Roman Catholic.
