They actually do. I think its well before fans arrive though. I have seen multiple tweets from players taking pics of them doing their walk. They all rub the Ernie statue as they walk through the quad.

do you know what time, or how many hrs in advance of a game, they do this?

They usually arrive at the Dome about 2 hours prior to game time, while we are having our pregame meeting in the Dome. They come in Gate E and walk across the field stopping at the 50 briefly then continue on to the locker room.
