Predictions on starting defense

Agree. But when Dino was talking about the players in green jerseys (i.e. players not yet cleared for contract), Thompson was on the list and I don’t think Lockett was. So maybe he is a little ahead of Thompson?

I believe both suffered the same injury in the same game last year so they should be on a similar timeline.
Lockett was a right kneecap injury vs Virginia. Thompson was an ACL in the opener vs Louisville.

I stand corrected. Was Lockett's injury a dislocated kneecap?

I know it’s easy to over inflate your favorite teams in the off season, but I don’t think it’s out of pocket to say this is the best defense of Dinos tenure here right? In regards to top end talent and QUALITY depth this defense can stack up with the upper half of the ACC no doubt. Me thinks this is the best team overall that has been on the hill in many years. I know 2018 was a heck of a year but this team I think is “better”

it sure seems like the depth on D is there. How many times has this defense run out of gas at the end of the 3rd and 4th Q because there was no depth? With all these guys now it would be amazing to have some fresher legs in 4q

Lol. I have interest in Ingraham. We could use a player with his size if he’s operable. In fact, it would be quite the welcome addition to have him in rotation because that would mean the coaches think he’s viable and he brings the size we don’t typically have. I mean, I love Darton, who wouldn’t, but it’s almost a miracle that he’s held up to this point. We have a number of players with experience in the interior now, which is great and could easily put Ingraham on the bench. However, and this bares repeating, players with size that can play within this scheme would be an atypical SU player. Therefore, the prospect of him making the rotation (not guaranteed) would be an interesting and good development.

So far, no mention of him. Is that because he’s been unspectacular? Is he showing the goods but still hasn’t picked up the playbook? Good but others just better? Is he just emergency depth or a possible future rotation guy? This is training camp. This is when these questions are asked and, if anyone has Intel, hopefully answered
Maybe slide into Emily's DM's and see if she will ask about him.

Yup.

I think Dino’s confidence in this team is evidenced by how little is known about them at this point. Modesty and close to the vest are old school traits which I believe are Dino’s way. Depth at critical positions, which has been a huge issue, has been worked on and seems (knock wood) in hand. This team is going to do their talking on the field, IMO. I, for one, can’t wait.

Winner, winner chicken dinner!

If we had a game tomorrow that would likely be the starting 11 on defense.

BUT we don't play tomorrow. We don't play until 4pm on Saturday, September 2, 2023, which is 18 days away. In those 18 days the team will play two more scrimmages, there will be a few more "owies" and some guys who are currently banged up will get healthy.

Peterson was not suited up today. Early in camp Bellamy was splitting time with Wilson but missed a few days last week. Reportedly Wilson re-established himself in Bellamy's absence.

I noticed a few other guys limited today, offense and defense. Watch the videos for yourself.

There are two more scrimmages (usually one a week in camp) before the teams enters game week on Monday, August 28, 2023 (which is also the first day of classes for the fall semester - yes, they have to go to class too).

I expect Thompson will be on the field for the first defensive series against Colgate and likely be done for the day after that. We don't want to lose this guy in a game against Colgate or Western Michigan.

I think Martin (transfer from Nebraska) who has been working at safety in camp has been moved to corner.

Word is Farmer is working with the rovers. He needs to learn the defense, but I expect him to immediately challenge Oliver for R2.

Greenwood can play all five positions in the secondary. He is undersized, but smart and plays hard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Seabourn (transfer from Santa Barbara CC) redshirts this year. It's not that he can't contribute this season, but he is one of the few guys in the secondary who still has a redshirt year to give (Simmons, Barron, Clark and Wilson are the others). Redshirting will help his development and put him is a better position to compete for playing time in 2024.

This defense does have good size and good speed, but they need to be smart. The 3-3-5 is challenging to offenses cause the QB often has trouble knowing who is going to be where in coverage or who will be blitzing from where, but we will hurt ourselves if we outsmart ourselves. Nothing hurts a defense more than someone missing an assignment or being out of position.

I pray everyone gets healthy and stays healthy.
Thanks for the info SUDadx2

Based on SUDadx2 posting history, this is a must read IMO for those looking for more information on where the team stands currently.

2 scrimmages left. This next to last scrimmage typically goes a long way toward establishing the 2 deep. I'm guessing there will be a surprise name or 2 when we finally see the list before the Colgate game.

Very cool to see today's article, indicating that Ty Gordon and Perry are standing out.

I've said since we landed Gordon that he is an absolute gem -- stud athlete who is going to be a multi-year starter here. Not remotely surprised that he's flashing like this.

And best of all, we don't have to rush him onto the field to fill a hole in the two-deep, due to lack of depth. We can afford to bring him along slowly, and play him situationally, while the more experienced depth ahead of him does the heavy lifting.

And if we get hit by an injury or two at DT, then he can ascend into a bigger role. And because he and Perry are studs, the unit won't be tanked if we DO sustain that key injury or two.

Roster quality and depth continues to improve.

Ty Gordon is almost an exact replica of Lockett. Both are built the exact same way, both play the exact same way, both very similar skill sets and both were not heavily recruited and will likely outplay their ranking

What article is this?

Deep but partially unproven. We should know after Purdue where we stand. Their transfer QB was a 5 star at Texas.
True, SU experience but a decent amount of major football experience.

That was the most informative article about a Syracuse football practice I have seen since young Bailey and the PS parted ways.

Props to Josh Crawford. We need more Josh please!
Last year he did a podcast with McCallister. The last episode of the pod was back in May. I hope they continue it this year as there aren't any other SU podcasts worth listening to out there.

Another writer named Griffin Della Penna did a notebook for yesterday worth taking a look at. I linked it in the daily articles but here is a direct link to it:

Looks like Griffin graduated from Canisius last May and is doing grad work at Newhouse.

Mike does a really nice job covering recruiting, It looks like SI might be stepping up its coverage of practices. That would be awesome.

More please.

Not after I went to that pornhub place everyone was talking about...talk about your eye opener.

Again, not in Virginia anymore.

Or again, so I'm told. I wouldn't know about such sinning.

It is crazy how deep our dline and LB rooms are comparatively to past seasons. Our defense with Rocky has the chance to be scary good. I think our dline rotations will be frequent for fresh legs and we are going to see more aggression overall. Starting will be immaterial on dline with all the players who will be rotating.
DE: CALEB O/BRICKSCHLITHOUSE PERRY/CHASE SIMMONS/JOBITY/JAQUEZ/NOLTON Jr
DT: DARTON/INGRAHAM/LOCKETT/CUNDIFF

Our LB room is just filthy

WAX, THOMPSON and SPARROW start and then MASON, MCDONALD and LOWERY rotate in. GODDARD may see minutes as well and ROON.

Our Secondary has a decent core with lots of potential but they also will get the benefit of a strong dline and Lb room, making their world easier I think.
BARRON/CLARKE/GOULD/FARMER/PETERSON/SIMMONS/JOHNSON/WILSON will all play.
I would agree definitely being a deepest. But I thought that defensive backs would be the strongest core. Just because all the quality players were brought in bellamy, Gould, clarke
