Blew off the Fine Mess tailgate to check out the Cuse on the Quad and the new food options in the Dome.
First, nice job setting up logistics around the dome with the construction happening. Good signage, reasonable room, and I love having the space between the Arch and the Dome Open (and I mean wide open). The Arch wall facing the Dome is plain, completely out of character with the original building and surrounding campus and very ugly.
I can only hope this is because there are plans to join it directly to the Dome soon and they didn’t want to waste money on something temporary,
The newly completed tension ring looks much larger and more impressive in person than on the live camera. I hope the same applies to the crown truss.
I liked the setup for Cuse on the Quad. A big sign explaining the tents and their purposes would have been nice but I entered the Quad from the West, just North of Falk (great brickwork addition there BTW). Maybe there is better signage coming from the North.
There was an impressive assortment of good choices. I got a breakfast sandwich and a water. The sandwich was a commercial product, clearly had been frozen and the egg and sausage tasted old and not very good. The water was only slightly cold. I was waited on really fast (there was no one there) and while there were tables and chairs set up, all were occupied. I was able to eat standing at a small table near the band.
I saw someone move their table near the band into the shade, much further from the band. I had to move too. The band was loudly very loud and it was far too much to take at 10 am in a weekend morning. Pretty sure everyone else was in agreement; the tables near the band were all unoccupied.
The burger toppings bar looked awesome and after seeing it, i greatly regretted getting a breakfast sandwich.
They even had a couple of TVs set up but the lack of tables nearby meant this effort was largely wasted.
Overall though, aside from a few quibbles, I thought things were well done, popular and the prices were very reasonable.
Once in the Dome, I tried a burger from the Loudhouse Grill, located where Burger King was years ago. Nice, high quality bun. The burger, to my surprise, was relatively thick and had lettuce and some onions in it. They had ketchup, mustard and relish packets but no mayo. Most stadiums have giant Heinz dispensers for condiments with more selections. We should too.
Thought the burger tasted kind of bland (it clearly wan’t grilled; no highlights from that). But it wasn’t dry and was better than most burgers I have had in similar settings.
Also tried a slice of the new pizza. This was near Gate A, towards the student section. Pepperoni and sausage for $5.75. The crust was thick and not real pizza crust. Had no crunch. The cheese, sausage and pepperoni were okay. Not great, lots of room for improvement but I appreciated being able to get two toppings and it was a big improvement over the infamous Sbarro cardboard product the Dome has imposed on unsuspecting customers for so long.
Regarding the game, I think this is going to be an offensive showdown. I expect WMU to move the ball and score some points.
Their defense is not good and I expect us to score a lot of points. Hope Cisco and ziggurat are going to play. Hope Heckel is going to play. Based on what I see in warmups, it looks like no Heckel again. Not good.
