I think this game should tell us a lot about the character of the players still able to play and the abilities of the two new coordinators, who each have major challenges to overcome today.

It is easy to get down on a team after a game they do not play well, and assume that is how they will play the rest of the season. But it is often not true, and probably more so than ever is in this most unusual season. You have to look no further than Duke as an example of a team that completely changed direction in one game.

I know many are down on the team, the staff and the players. They were embarrassed last week. They were already dealing with a lot of injuries, and somehow the incredible streak of bad luck with players getting hurt continued, and we lost our starting QB, our starting RB, as well as our starting MIKE, And one of our starters at safety got pretty banged up and missed large portions of the game.

I expect Sterlin is going to put in some changes on offense. We have a new quarterback with a much different skill set. I expect Liberty to pack the box, take away the run and force Syracuse to beat them through the air. Sterlin should be expecting it and should have a game plan to counter this. From the little I have seen of Rex, he doesn’t throw it great but he is good throwing on the run and he is very good at RPO plays, where his intelligence is a huge asset. If I were Sterlin, I would do a lot of RPO, and try and take advantage of mismatches with our skill guys. I am pretty sure Pena and Lutz will be able to do damage catching the ball out of the backfield. Might be good to try and give Rex short, easy passes to complete and try and get fast guys the ball in space.

I would think this will be a game where it makes sense to pass it to the TEs a lot. We should have a big size advantage here and I think it would be a good idea to have Rex throw short, easy to complete passes to the big guys.

Some option sounds like a good idea, where Rex can take advantage of his size, strength, surprising agility and his ability to read the defense. I think we have to find a way to hold on to the ball and give the defense, devastated by so many injuries, a chance to stay rested.

Speaking of the defense, Tony White has some challenges too. This is the first game under him where we face a QB who can really run with the ball. Let’s see how well we handle this. I am hoping we do not try too hard to get sacks and give him the ability to run outside the pocket and through our defense for big gains. This game, I think we want to contain the QB in the pocket (and hopefully take him down from there). While it was disappointing to watch the defense unable to stop a simple run play over and over last week, I take some comfort from the fact that Tony did not just use the same defense and approach as his unit was getting abused. He tried a bunch of things. It looked like he was running our goal line defense for long periods, he showed them a ton of new blitzes we had not used before, etc. I really think we would have shut them down if not for the huge problems caused by injuries down the center of the defense. We played without Cisco and Coley at safety. We played without Thompson. We played a big part of the game without Cantin-Arcu. And we played a lot with Carter out as well.

The first thing I can going to look at when the telecast begins is if Cantin-Arcu and Thompson are playing. If they are, and are close to 100%, we have a real good chance to win this game. If they are still out, wow, it is going to be hard to win. We need some men to play LB. I think Richards is still out as well,,,,should add him to this list.

As with Sterlin, Tony has a great challenge today to piece together a unit from the players he has left to work with, and to find a way to stop Liberty rushing attack. It is unfortunate that our biggest weakness on defense is their biggest strength. It is going to take a tremendous effort from all the remaining players to play well and win this game today.

I am an optimist. I think this team was embarrassed last week and I think they will be highly motivated to show their character on the field today. I expect our coordinators are going to really step up with great game plans and I think we are going to win this game, fairly easily. If nothing else, this game is going to provide good insights into what we have with our 2 new coordinators. They have great challenges before them. I hope they are up to the task.

I would be surprised if Cantin-Arku plays. Just a hunch.

Appreciate the pre game insight here, the positivity helps and this season is far from over, got to enjoy that we playing football and have a shot at playjng 11 games. Try and enjoy and look for development everyone

One of my concerns on the offense is whether the even more inexperienced RBs will be able to call out protection.

I wonder if that is an offseason tweak Dino and co can make? Changing how that is done. Shouldn't it be the QB?

I'm half expecting our offensive play calling to look exactly like it has been called this year, unsuccessfully. Over this coaching staffs tenure there's one thing the offense hasn't always done well most of the seasons, make in game adjustments. We go in with a plan and if it doesn't work we just keep trying to do it. That's happened from game to game too.

In recent years, it seems like the games where we get excited by the TEs are against the weaker OOC opponents. So maybe today holds form.

My game morning. Quite frankly it sucks for me . Sucks for my wife . Sucks for my friends and family . Tommy got hit with. Hammer last night as he wasn’t invited to the team hotel .
I guess the $80 room wasn’t in the budget that’s probably the policy but ... I’m angry that he isn’t playing and he should be . If you have ever been in a car accident and thought if I only left a second early or later it wouldn’t have happened. Or if thr accident was a result of someone else . I wasn’t angry until today . Im having 4 people over instead of 30
Tommy brought us together and that’s been taken from us . Injury is part of the game I get that but this one burns me . In 8th grade during an August scrimmage bs another team
The QBs were non contact tommy toolk off running and was badly horse collared while I was right behind him coaching he broke his ankle and was in a full leg cast by the grace of god I held my composure not to say something to that kid who did that . He was to miss the entry season I was angry as it was someone else’s fault not bad luck .
When he got his cast off we accelerated the rehab and with a limp we brought him back in the semi finals and championship we left the guys back like punt block to protect him
Only 2 guys to run route he threw 7 tds in 5 qtrs of the 2 games and we won the chip .
Now instead of envisioning tds vs liberty I’m dreaming of a bowl game vs Rutgers and a return to yankee stadium and a big day for TD and a win to put a good taste in our mouth . Enjoy the game

I feel for your family and hope for that bowl game as well
As to the team hotel it most likely is policy that any kid who is out doesn't stay. My guess is this is a one size fits all so the staff doesn't want to create an issue by choosing one player but not another.
Keep your Chin up. Everything for a reason. Its counterintuitive but long term i truly believe for many reasons Tommy is going to benefit from the time off.

This is nothing new. Nor was it a swipe at Tommy.

Out and not playing? You're not staying with the team.
I know and I get it but they should maybe re think it
Or give them the option it’s a lonely feeling for them especially when they are mentally hurting already .

As a positive way to approach today, we have 9 of the game 1 starters in place on offense, and Rex and Pierre have been waiting for their chance to surprise us. Maybe Morgan and someone like Lutz or Pierre can actually contribute.

On defense, the DL is intact and has an opportunity against an OL that might be a cut below the ACC level. Lee Kpogba at LB has been waiting for his chance. Same for Jonas at safety.

Can Dino rally a team after a loss and after a handful of injuries? Can he pull a surprise, as he did last season against Wake? Big test for our staff.

This really has to smart for both you and Tommy. I feel so bad for you guys. Today will be the hardest one for you both not being able to enjoy the normal Saturday festivities for you, and for Tommy too who will not to be able to run out on the field with his teammates. Just keep in mind that it will get better with time. Hang in there and try to enjoy the little things, watch the game, look for signs of improvement and growth from his friends/teammates, and root on his comrades. Im not sure if there will be any changes or adjustments by the staff for this game, but if there are (guessing there will be some) we can all try to enjoy the work the kids and staff are putting in to try and win every week. Wishing you and Tommy the best of luck, and just know there are lot of good Orange fans like myself out there who are rooting you guys on.

I think COVID has something to do with it too. They’re limited with numbers and want to avoid contact with as many players as possible. The cost of the hotel is minimal. I read an article a couple of weeks ago about how much food is spent on players the night before and the day of the game. I think it was about Clemson. We might know what injured players are playing today by finding out who was at the hotel last night.

I just hope this game doesn't make me yearn for the games against Colgate.

Our talent is banged up but it’s better than Liberty’s talent.

The DL needs to eat today.
They should be able to generate some pressure.
Run the ball. Just like John Chaney’s amoeba defense we will do the football version of that and do enough to slow them down.

Our OL should be able to move their DL. If they can’t that is bad coaching.

Can Dino rally a team after a loss and after a handful of injuries?
This is the biggest “handful” of injuries I can ever remember.

Agreed it sucks but there are all sorts of rules in place, agreed it's callous.

Thank yuu

It's all about team, heart and imposing their will. It's about coaches putting in a smart gameplan that takes advantage of strengths and positions the young men for success. I am looking forward to watching this. Good write up Tom. I agree.
