Preseason ranking next year?

Who else will be good?

UK is losing Davis, Gilchrist, Jones, Lamb, Teague, Miller
UNC is losing Barnes, Henson, Zeller, (possibly McAdoo, Marshall)
OSU is losing Sullinger, Buford, and has zero 2012 recruits at this point
Kansas is losing Robinson, Taylor, Teahan
MSU is losing Green, Wood
Duke is losing Rivers, Plumlee, Plumlee

Indanas going to be very good, return everyone basically and a great class coming in

I truly do love the orange colored glasses most of us put on when evaluating how others will view our team. If Dion and Fab come back then I'd agree we'd probably be top 10. That not being anywhere likely SU will not sniff the top 10 even with Noel. I know other teams lose a lot of players also but SU, as deep as it was returns little proven talent for others to evaluate. We return Triche, that's it. Other than BT we return a PF who started but was very underperforming for a McD AA. Rak will be viewed just like Fab was coming into this year, a disappointment with something to prove. We also return role players in Fair and Southerland, nothing for outsiders to get excited about. Each showed flashes but not the consistency. MCW is a very talented unproven commodity looking to take over the team, provided his HOF coach doesn't still insist that Triche is the team's PG. And then their Keita who disappeared for games at a time but had a nice tournament run. But despite 2 years expereience in the Big East many SU fans are thinking he shoudl redshirt because of the possibility of 2 super frosh. The one we know is coming, Coleman, is a reported load of a post player with conditioning questions who by the way is not as highly rated as Christmas was but he's going to be shiny and new so then he's obviously going to be better. I won't mention Cooney because no matter how good I think he'll be, teams rankings are rarely impacted by their 3rd guard. Bottom line we lost 4 of our top 5 players and have a lot of talented options that have to find their way in Division I hoop. I see a pre-season ranking around 12-18 likely. If Noel does come to SU that may go to 10-15. But remember...this is how I think outsiders will view SU and how they'll be ranked.

It's just as much what other teams have than what we have. If we get Noel, you name me 14 teams with more talent than Noel, Coleman, Fair, Southy, MCW, Triche, Rak, Cooney, Grant, Keita

Assuming Chane Behanan comes back, I would think Louisville will be #1

NC State will be top 10, mark it down. UNC will take a big step back. So will Vanderbilt. Indiana will be top 10 also.

In the BE, I think the top-4 next year are Lou, SU, ND, and Gtown

In the Big 10, Wisconsin, OSU, and Indiana have a lot of young talent

ACC: Duke, NC, NC State

SEC: UK
Pac-10: Zona

I hope they are UNRANKED No preassure ala 2002-03

Seriously, we are losing 3 starters and our best player in Waiters.

yup. people thinking we're gonna be top 10 without noel are in for a letdown. no way the pollsters will give our returning players plus our frosh that much respect. we're losing too much talent, just like when we lost flynn, devo, and harris we were unranked preseason. not saying i agree with this, but from an outsiders perspective people will see what we're losing and will rank us based on that. last year we returned everyone but rick and were preseason #4.

I disagree, remember last year preseason we had lost RJ and had four players returning + a McD and came in top 5. This year we will have 3 starters returning (BT, CJ, Rak, and JS) and two McDs (MCW + DC2). That should impress the voters once again.

Secondly look at the other post about what is happening to the other top programs, most experiencing heavy losses. Looks like LVille, Indiana, OSU, one of either Duke/UNC, and maybe UK would be above us. That would put us in the 5-10 range.

If you're going to dream about Fab and Dion coming back, you should really admit we would be preseason #1.

This years #4 ranking seemed to be based on what was returning - 4 starters, not on what was lost (the best player RJ). And that was from a 26-9 squad. It was the same method that ranked UConn #3, they had 4 returners coming back (not on what they lost in Kemba).

The upcoming ranking may come from (and should be based on) what is returning -3 starters (+JS) and 2 McDs (one soph and one frosh). That is from a 34-3 squad, that had been considered to have some of the best depth in the country.

And the last consideration is what is happening with the teams around you. Most of the top squads seem to be experiencing heavy losses as well. So 3 returners + 2 McD replacements from an ending top 5 shouldn't fall much, if any. LVille, OSU, Indiana may make moves up, but Duke, UK, UNC may move down.

When we lost Flynn, Devo, and Harris we were a sub 30 win team losing 3 starters. We were replacing them with unheralded players like Wes, so I think that is a bad comparison. Last years process that ended up with the preseason ranking of #4 seems more similar - see analysis above.

Who's dreaming about Fab and Dion coming back? If you read my post I state "...that not being anywhere likely...". The dreamers are the ones who think we will still be ranked high even though those players are not coming back. We also do not have 3 starters coming back, even though you list 4 . Or does anyone who ever started a game count? Be prepared to feel that SU is disrespected because the rest of the country does not love our returning players and recruits as much as we do.

Top 7 regardless of Noel. Team will still be 9 deep without Noel, Fab and Dion. 2 Seniors (Triche, South), CJ, Rak and MCW leading the way. Pretty damn good start.

Three starters - BT, CJ, and Rak. Those three were starting the whole NCAAT. Plus 2 McDs - MCW and DC2. JS was a big contributor who will be a senior who is also coming back. We are a 34-3 team which was considered to have the best depth in the country and 5 of those players are coming back.

My point is people look who is coming back - and that is a lot.
Then they look at hyped additions - the McDs. And SU has McD replacments.

Then they have to look at what we have vs the competition. And I believe those credentials will stack up well.

In a dream world, our starting lineup next season is

1) Triche
2) Waiters
3) Fair
4) Noel
5) Fab

Bench of Christmas, Southerland, MCW, Coleman, Cooney, Keita, Grant

In reality, it will be

1) MCW
2) Triche
3) Southerland
4) Fair
5) Christmas

Remember, we've seen year after year, no one is as harsh on this team preseason as the people on this board are.

Every year the consensus on this board is that we are ranked too high, and people can't believe why anyone would think we're so good at that point in the season.

If you're pessimistic heading into next season, adjust your ranking expectations upwards. It happens every year. We've been in the top 10 for 4 solid years, more or less. We're going to have to prove we don't belong before they kick us out.

I think you are missing DC2 as a starter. I believe he will start day 1. He will be given at least the Fab/Rak big man McD starter treatment. And I believe he will crack it - meaning he will deserve and get real minutes. And if you have DC2 and Rak starting you probably would need JS at the forward for the outside shot and to pull defenders away from the middle.

I think the situation will be a lot like 2010 AO/RJ. Start the two centers Rak and DC2 and then sub from there and have those 2 split the majority of the minutes at center, unless one of them can emerge at the PF spot.

What if we get a player and his last name is actually "Noels"? Then where are we ranked?
