PS & DO: LB Preview

Easily our most impressive group on defense. They will have their work cut out with the razor thin depth at DL. Will be interesting to see how much Ward sways away from a true 4-3.

I know the last time we employed the 3-4 Georgia Tech ran roughshod over us, but you got to play to your strengths and LB is our defensive strength.

Hope thomas and bennett each gained a half step in the off season. Though improvements have been made around of linebacker core, we still rely on them and Slayton to be gamechangers.

It's too bad that none of our OLBs are edge types that could help mask a lack of depth at DE, and maybe even play with one hand down. Not the type of guys we've recruited at that position, though--oh well.

Fagan, Richards and Trotter will all redshirt, learn the system and get bigger stronger faster for 2018. I am confident in the two deep. 1st unit will be Bennett, Franklin and Valdez. 2nd unit will be Thomas, Armstrong and Guthrie. We haven't been this deep in a long time

A tremendous luxury that we don't have to rush undersized newbies like Fagan / Trotter out onto the field just to field adequate depth. Those guys will really benefit from the year of physical maturity gained from being in a collegiate S&C program, and we're optimizing their long term value to the team, having a full year to get immersed in learning the system, which in turn will allow the game to slow down, etc.

I look forward to the day we've got a similar situation at DL -- seems like we're perpetually behind the curve there.

Exactly. Richards is the most physically ready out of the 3. Any other year we would be throwing him in on special teams and burning their redshirt. Fagan too lol.

LOVE the depth. That said, i am really excited about the younger lbs. Our backers, like our dbs got smoked last year in coverage. A large part of T2 success is the backers playing in space, covering and tackling and they didn't exactly excel. Love our #'s and hopefully after a year in the system, the true talent of this group emerges .

It's damn time that opposing receivers fear coming over the middle again.
