Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse will anoint a new basketball point guard this season.

With Michael Gbinije gone to the NBA, the Orange will rely on his understudy, Frank Howard, and graduate transfer John Gillon to perform the most important duties on the basketball court.

With practice set to start in earnest on Sept. 30, Jim Boeheim and his staff will begin to evaluate potential lineups for what the Syracuse head coach calls his most versatile roster since Dion Waiters came off the bench for the Orange in 2011-12...

Does this rule out all the spec of Battle and White getting huge mins in backcourt together? I kid, i assume a ton of combos will be very much in consideration by Coach

Is it possible , starting lineup of Howard/Gillon at 1, White at 2, Battle at 3? Who knows. Ive assumed H/G at 1, B at 2, W at 3. Should be interesting how JB plays his zone and lines everyone up

It's not a done deal Lydon comes off the bench, regardless of what some people think here. If White is going to play the 2, Lydon's going to play the 3 a good amount.

In that situation, White is bigger, stronger, and a better rebounder than Battle. So in OUR SYSTEM, he'd probably be the 3. On offense, he's just going to camp out and shoot, while Battle does his thing. Doesn't matter whether you call either a 2 or a 3.

But on defense, when you play them together at the wing positions, why put the smaller guy who is better suited to playing the top of the zone and moving his feet to cut off penetration to the back line?

When the dust settles, I'd expect Battle up top and White on the back line when those two are playing alongside a PG.

Good article. Battle not really in the PG mix and probably he and White will fit in at the 2 or 3.
Edited to add: I don't think who is the 2 and who is the 3 matters much on offense like RF posted. When Lydon is in, he's going be behind the arc and so will White. On defense, it'll be whoever picks up the slides and positioning idiosyncrasies the best for either up top or on the wing.
Key quote: " We'll see how that works, see how the centers play, see how much Tyler Lydon plays center."
That just screams Tyler Lydon at the 3. ;)

For the life of me, I cannot see Tyus ever playing the 3 in the zone. You think CJ got abused at times, or Malachi, or Kueth way back when he was put in the dog house? I think Tyus would get abused and the other teams would attack and expose him. I just don't see it.

Gillion howard 1
White Battle 2
White Battle Lydon 3
Lydon Rob Moyer TT 4
Coleman Chubaka Lydon TT 5

Lots of combos depending on the opposition, game flow, how players are performing any given night.
JB has to be drooling.

The part before that sentence is pretty huge, too.

"And we're going to have to see where Andrew White plays, whether he plays at the two or at the three. We'll have to see. He could play the two easily. We'll see how that works, see how the centers play, see how much Tyler Lydon plays center."
