Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse basketball freshman Matthew Moyer's foot injury appears to be potentially more serious than initial reports indicated.

Moyer, a 6-foot-8 forward, injured his right foot three weeks ago. Some reports suggested that Moyer had a sprained ankle and would be ready for the start of the Orange's preseason practice.

However, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said the school's medical staff initially feared that the injury could force Moyer to miss the upcoming season. Boeheim said those initial fears quickly turned into the hope that six more weeks of rest could have Moyer ready to play this season.

"He hasn't played for two or three weeks,'' Boeheim said. "He won't play for five or six more weeks. We really have to see where he is at the end of that time. If his injury is healed or if he needs a procedure done on him.

"Depending on where he is, we'll have to evaluate what his health is and what's best for him.''..

I loves me a 5th year guy! Here's hoping it is nothing like Bill Walton or Greg Oden foot.

Sounds like the insiders here knew the scoop. Things seem to be developing the way certain posters have suggested. Would suck to lose him for the season, but in all likelihood, Moyer probably wasn't going to see a ton of PT past the non-conference slate anyway. It'll all work out in the end.

It looks to me like he will redshirt. Even if he is medically cleared in 6 weeks, he will have gone 2 months-plus not playing. When will he again be in playing shape if he does not take the court again until mid-October?

Young people bounce back quickly.

To me, it’s a blessing in disguise if he redshirts. We won’t need him much this year and he could be a monster in 4 years.

Shades of when Kueth was rehabbing from the torn ACL from his senior year in high school. We redshirt him and 5 years later, he’s the old man providing leadership on the 2003 title team. Pretty sure that team was undefeated when Q scored 10 or more.

A lesser example would be Cooney redshirting and helping us get to a Final 4 this season as a RS senior.

He said a toe. If I was a betting boy I would say Kyrie Irving at Duke.

Yankees pitcher Bryan Mitchell had a Grade 3 turf toe and a fractured sesamoid bone which required surgery. He missed 4 months.

Iggy's gonna have to pick a new 10th man to hype up as the second coming to set up bashing JB all year.
