Class of 2023 QB Austin Novosad (TX) Portal from Oregon to Bowling Green

According to this article, he sustained an injury in September, which may have caused him to miss the rest of the season. Maybe that's why he got supplanted by a walk on QB as the backup [versus being "beaten out" -- not sure, I don't watch much Oregon football].

Oregon QB Austin Novosad dealt with a latissimus dorsi (lat) injury during the 2025 season, described by Coach Dan Lanning as precautionary, limiting his play and eventually leading to his entry into the transfer portal in late 2025. He appeared in only one game in 2025 and missed significant time due to this nagging injury before leaving the program, finishing his Duck career with limited game action but a high completion rate.
Injury Details:
  • What: A latissimus dorsi (lat) strain.
  • When: Bothered him during the 2025 season, starting around September.
  • Impact: Kept him out of several games as a precaution, even though he could practice.
Season & Transfer:
  • Novosad played in only the first game of the 2025 season (vs. Montana State) before the injury became a factor.
  • He entered the transfer portal in December 2025, with two years of eligibility remaining.
Overall:
  • The injury sidelined him for much of his final season at Oregon, impacting his playing time and ultimately contributing to his decision to transfer.
sounds like Jakhari's situation

Makes sense

And that's exactly what they did with Odom. To the letter.

Now, they need another quarterback. With Angeli, and now Odom, chances are you are not going to land another starting caliber player from a smaller program.

We brought in multiple -- Odom [who we landed], Atknison [Oregon State], Dickens, and Stokes [Memphis]. Several if not all of those prospects could be starters at a higher level program. It is hard to know who the staff prioritized of those four, or whether it was a "first to commit" situation, but Odom was the one we landed.

Once we did, it made it virtually impossible to land any of those other players. Why? Because they also want to play, and make the most of their opportunity to potentially start on a bigger stage. Its a pipe dream to think otherwise. Sure, it would be great to have landed a combo of say Odom and Dickens [or Atkinson], but that isn't realistic.

Atkinson might have been an option to come here [it sounds like we were close to landing him], but he wasn't going to come along WITH Odom, to vie for 2nd / 3rd place in the pecking order behind Steve Angeli.

So, now that they executed the strategy that you are looking for -- landing an experienced player from a smaller program -- they still have a hole to fill. Maybe there is a D2 player out there somewhere [if the staff gets creative] who warrants a look.

Or maybe the cupboard is generally bare at this point, and they are pivoting to less experienced players, but rolling the dice on potential / system fit with this kid [Novosad]. Have to fill the 3rd string QB position somehow.

Also important to keep in mind that the staff likes Lott. Hopefully, he won't be rushed onto the field next year. But maybe HE'S capable of being the #3 QB on the depth chart, or even the backup. Which means that anyone else you add is gravy.

Three years in, being a four-star recruit doesn't matter much. But most things being equal, I'd rather take a higher rated recruit from a bigger program when I'm not counting on that guy to necessarily be a starter. Maybe he's got the tools to be a system fit -- time will tell. We haven't even secured a commitment from this guy, and that article was vague about us being a "team to watch," so maybe this is all pointless discussion anyway.
And Memphis just signed Air Noland … I wonder what Stokes is thinking now.

They probably told him they were signing two QBs. SU’s intention is to sign two QBs, and he still visited SU.

I’ll bet money they didn’t … because there is a high degree of likelihood he is now just competing for QB2 which is what he would have done here.

Great post. QB3 is a hard role to sell in the transfer portal, especially when SU cannot afford to overpay for one. Even given the uncertainty that Angeli's injury brings to the QB room next year, signing another proven starter such as Taron Dickens is an uphill battle. Having said that, I do find it really funny for us to be collectively biting our nails at the thought of a former Elite 11 QB being brought in as a potential third string player. Best case scenario? No. But it wouldn't be the worst either...

Wasn’t Tommy Lasagna an Elite 11 QB? I forget all the different titles. Syracuse fans have every reason to be skeptical of accolades and hype. Glad we got a second QB with experience.

Isn’t today the last day to enter the portal? Might see some shenanigans today with late portal entries. Or possibly Frananigans.

Just to be clear, I am not sold on Novosad and SU could definitely get burned here. But, as much as I want another proven QB on the team, convincing one to sign is tough given the current roster.

Ah nice. Thanks for posting this. Didn't know about the injury. That is even better news IMO. Looks like Novosad was QB2 for game 1 of the season. Moore played the first drive of the 3rd quarter and Novosad got the second. He was 1 for 2 with a 40 yard pass. He didn't throw a pass after that in any game and I don't believe he played in any other game after that. So he was Oregon's second string QB last season but got injured early with a lat injury.

That to me means he is even more likely to be good and also gives him the possibility of 3 more years at QB if he were to get a medical redshirt, which could be possible. That is so far away that it doesn't matter a lot but could keep him from bolting earlier or if he works out well as the answer that is another year he is available to play for us. Who knows.

No we don't have much in the way of college snaps to judge him by as he only has thrown 12 passes but I think Novosad could be solid and is less risky than many think. Certainly not a player i would want to put all my chips in with, like we almost did with Rickie last year. But he would be a good option in my opinion with our current situation.

Given we already have Odom, my guess is that Fran would take Novosad in a heartbeat if the NIL worked.
