QB Blair Kiel of Cincy just gotten taken out sliding to the ground.

sliding is the stupidest rule.

the guy is going to tackle you at your waist and you give yourself up and lower your head to where the guy is going to hit you. then your head snaps back and hits the ground.

they need to come up with some other alternative, spiking the ball, anything. you're better off not sliding.
Mental note for all quarterbacks only slide if you're out in the open!

He got a concussion on last Saturday and Tuberville plays him the next week. I hope Kiel is okay and that shot is why I don't want Dungey playing till USF at the earliest.
Exactly, with that shot on top of last weeks Kiel is now done for most of the season and maybe all the year. No way in hell should have even been in this week if he was diagnosed with any kind of concussion as no way in hell should he even have been playing as i've been writing all over the place this week. If you don't let the brain heal some the next concussion can come much easier and be much worse and that's exactly what's going to happen here. And with hits like this one and dungys you worry about more than just head truama from a concussion but all the life-threatening stuff with the arteries and neurologic's. This is nothing to with which is why I am so glad they're keeping ED out this week

Lotta LSU people have a pretty negative opinion of Kiel based on the shenanigans he pulled on us a few years back, but no one wants to see a kid get injured, ever. I feel like the game has gotten to where it protects the QBs a little too much, but when anyone is sliding, they should be off limits to defenders.

Guys, he did not have a concussion last week, he had a neck strain. He passed all concussion protocol.

My bigger concern is with the slide. I think the slide puts both the QB and defender in a precarious position. QB has his head and chin up, leaving himself vulnerable. The defender is trying to make a play, and in this case, even led with his shoulder. If Kiel doesn't slide and the defender eases up because he thinks he's going to slide, where does that lead the defense? More and more I see these hits, the more and more I think the slide is the issue.

Looked like a clean play to me but there was helmet to helmet contact. While the Db led with his shoulder his helemt hit Kiel on the side of Kiels head

Agreed, the slide just promotes or increases odds of a hit that will produce a head bounce off the turf. I agree that hit had zero intention of being cheap or a target, it was the perfect storm and a prime example to STOP SLIDING unless you know you are in the clear!!!

football is the dumbest sport. we all love it because it involves running, throwing, catching, and hitting (what other major sport has that) but everything about it is so dumb. if you don't want to get tackled give the ball to someone else to get tackled.

at least the refs got it right. small consolation, it's still terrible to see someone take years off their life because of a dangerous rule

just change the tackle rule to touch and leave everything else the same.. it would be a boon to SU since we seldom break tackles anyway. to make it fair the play doesnt end until the 2nd guy touches you. 2 man touch instead of 2 hand touch..

That's why I thought Shafer should have been more vocal, instead of saying it's a football play, we won't pursue anything further. There are times that applies. CMU player, it didn't apply.

Coaches are part of the problem, not the solution.

I just wish they'd ease up on the dog and pony show about how much they care for their players.

agree. these guys slide at the very last second. what are you supposed to do? andrew luck faked a slide against the bills and picked up 10 more yards. you can't assume he's going to slide.
That ought to be an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and it should be 15 yards AND loss of down.

If people want to change the game and be rid of players leading with helmets, take away the helmet.

we've already tried that experiment 100-120 years ago. lots of dead football players and real talk of banning.

moral hazard explains a lot but not everything

Agreed. The Memphis player was already moving in for the tackle before Gunner slid. This one is an unfortunate accident.

Agree. I don't think the Memphis player should rot in hell.

Still on the ground and not a lot of movement.

What is wrong with some of the defensive guys trying to take out guys. I do not think they would like it if the shoe was on the other foot.

All this would just end if college football bit the bullet and started wearing those helmet pads SU practices in for all games.

It is time to do it. If they can get the color of the pads to match normal helmet colors, it really won't be a big deal. Maybe Michigan's helmet will look a little funky with the bumps.

I can't believe there is a solution and no one is acting to get it in place across the board. Even if it only solves 75% of the concussion problem, it would be worth it.

Eh 120 years ago...put it this way if you at least took away their face masks players would play different

This play was the definition of a bang-bang type play and the defender was already committed prior to Kiel sliding. Not a dirty play IMO just unfortunate contact. Very different from the CMU hit on Dungey, albeit with the same end result.
