No I don’t really think it’s debatable. Put Dungey on another team, is he a multiyear starter? It would depend on what team his is on. How about Shrader, he starts for us, but not on his former team. Getting beat out doesn’t necessarily mean a QB is not very good, it means there is a lack of actual game data to make an accurate assessment. Again only one QB gets a chance, and lots of factors go in to that decision. Every other position except for specialists like kickers, backups get at least some meaningful playing time or there are multiple starters, so a more accurate assessment can be made. You could have two mediocre QBs competing to be starter or two excellent QBs competing.
Well they are given 5 years of eligibility and not 1 so it certainly seems debatable.

O

Brad Johnson might be a good example. Started six games at FSU as a junior before being passed by. As a senior only started one game. He went on to play in the NFL for a long time and even was the qb when the Bucs won their first Super Bowl.
Jalen Hurts was benched in favor of Tua ... looks like things worked out well for him no?

Uncle Rico is available to coach immediately. Problem is I don't know where he parked his van to each him...

"Come'ere, boy!"

No, not very good. He couldn’t beat Mahomes and win the Super Bowl.
Well considering he just signed a massive contract and made the Super Bowl I would consider that pretty damn good. If a kid like Davis pulled that off we'd be over the moon.

Ok, you missed the sarcasm and the context where it had been claimed any QB losing a competition must not be very good.

Indeed I did .. text is dead ... hard to pick up tone at times. Then there are folks that think you suck if you don't win the big one ... half the time you never know where someone stands.

A few points:
  • I think it's okay for some fans to be a little concerned that he was beaten out by a True Freshman
However...
  • Joe Burrow, the #1 pick in the NFL draft and Heisman Trophy winner, was also originally beaten out and did quite well for himself after he transferred
  • He was beaten out by a South Carolina kid at a South Carolina school-That may have had an impact on the pecking order
  • I love being able to keep Villari at TE, where I think he can be a stud
If you really want to look at a story that is about success at the QB position and a QB who watched Donovan McNabb and SU beat Michigan in their BIG Stadium, look no further than the GOAT Tom Brady.

To get attention, after high school he had to send out dozens of highlight tapes.

When Michigan offered a scholarship, he took it but found himself buried on the depth chart at seventh-string. His junior season it looked like Brady might finally get the job to himself, but had to battle a freshman phenom named Drew Henson for the job. During the 1998 Syracuse game, when Donovan McNabb was running wild, the fans booed Brady and cheered for Henson.

He was drafted by New England in the Sixth Round at 199. I think you know the rest.

It's about getting a chance. Don't pick on Braden Davis. IMO, looking at his film, he has plenty of talent throwing and running the ball. Great throwing motion, much faster than Brady but will he get a chance at SU? We're going to find out, I hope.

I HAVE A GOOD FEELING ABOUT BRADEN AND ALSO BECAUSE I'M SUPERSTITIOUS, I GOT LIKE # 6,444 WITH IT, THANK YOU!

ASSETS PER HUDL SENIOR HS FILM:

HIGH FB IQ

GREAT VISION
AGILE
QUICK
FAST
CAN THROW FROZEN ROPES THROUGH TIGHT WINDOWS OR FINESSE BALL WHEN HE HAS TO
VERY PATIENT IN POCKET, SENSES D PRESENCE AND HAS GREAT MOBILITY TO GET OUT OF TROUBLE
GREAT LEGS THAT GETS HIM FREE OF D NEAR POCKET
LOVES TO THROW
THROWING SET UP: WEIGHT IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE ON BACK LEG AS HE BRINGS BALL FORWARD, TRANSFERS WEIGHT TO FRONT LEG WITH THROWING MOTION - ALL POWER TRANSFERS TO THE ARM AND INTO
SPEED OF THE BALL.
CAN THROW FROZEN ROPES MID AND LONG RANGE OR FINESSE BALL WHEN HE NEEDS TO AND PLAY CALLS FOR IT
THROWS 50 YARDS EASILY/ THROWS THROUGH TIGHT WINDOWS LONG AND SHORT

VERY FAMILIAR WITH RECEIVERS ROUTES AND GETS THE BALL CLOSE TO THEM FOR AN EASIER CATCH

IN GENERAL, THIS IS A VERY, VERY GOOD ATHLETE, ESP AT QB, AND A GREAT ADDITION TO HAVE IN THE QB ROOM. IMO HE WILL COMPETE WITH DEL RIO AND BE THE STARTER AFTER GARRETT LEAVES.

Hopefully we will see him get some reps in our first two games after CDRW does his thing. Especially if we are blowing out C’gate and W. Michigan. Garrett will not play long if we start dominating. At least he shouldn’t…

I think he starts next year

I think many posters are VASTLY underrating CDRW, based upon the poor performance at Pitt. He's going to be very difficult to unseat post-Shrader.

And for the record, I hope that Davis pushes the hell out of him. Want the best talent we can have in the QB room. May the best player earn the PT.

you're dreaming if you think the 3rd string will get reps. The 2nd string won't even get reps unless GS is hurt and even then he might not.

If we are beating C’gate by four touchdowns, no backup quarterbacks will see time? That is what you are eluding to? Your delusional.

They didn't last year. I don't have snap counts but I could get them.

In a 48-14 win over Uconn, Wilson was 1-3 and had 2 carries. Barely played.

Wagner 59-0 > Wilson 1-1 passing, 2 carries.

In a 38-3 drubbing to FSU, Wilson 0-1 passing, 1 carry.

So IF either gets in the game, expect to see how good they handoff.

Babers has never given backup QBs meaningful snaps. Belief with evidence.

I agree that he should but sadly not likely to see any meaningful minutes unless due to injury to our starter. Still remember Dungy (under Shafer) getting concussed years ago in a game where many believed he should have been pulled because of the score.

Fair enough. I can admit when I am wrong. Hopefully HCDB has learned from his past experiences, to substitute. I don’t know why CDRW didn’t get more credible reps against Wagner. It doesn’t make sense.

Anae/Beck were new last year and they were probably using the reps to test things with the first team and work on continuity.

Something else to consider here.

Justin Lamson was supposed to be the backup. Had he been healthy, he would have been the guy getting snaps. He had been around the program longer, had more college experience and probably would have been allowed to do more as the primary backup.

CDRW didn't even have the spring to get accustomed to the offense. He was thrown into the fire early and was likely not at all familiar with the offense.

That should be different this year, with him anyway.

That said, I think Phat is right. Don't remember Dino giving backup QBs a lot of chances to throw it in blowout football games. And he might be even more reluctant to showcase a backup QB now given the transfer portal. The good news here is that CDRW has used his transfer with no penalty opp so it should be a different situation than it would have been if say, Lamson had stayed for 2024.

Colgate >>> Wagner. And Western Michigan >>> Colgate.

That's the thing people underestimate about losing a back-up with 2 or 3 years in the program. They are more likely to be effective having had a couple years already running the offense, learning the calls, the reads, the audibles.
