QB Depth Chart

One thing...and this is just me spit balling here...is that Long doesn't need to get into a rhythm as much as Hunt or even Nassib did. He hits a good amount of throws with a solid degree of accuracy. Small sample size but eye balling this it certainly seems to be the case so far. If he continues to be that way vs this Clemson D, I'll be a very happy Orange fan.

Drew Allen started last year ahead of Hunt and obviously Hunt was the far better QB - Hell, Allen could barely throw the ball past the line of scrimmage.

Now Long (the #3 QB in the depth chart) is clearly the better QB over Hunt and Wilson.

I know there are a lot of variables here including Long being a freshman the size of Spud Webb, but it does make me question the coaching staffs ability to assess the talent level.

Hunt was obviously the better QB once the games were played. I really doubt that the staff would have led with Allen if he looked like he was holding a live hand grenade during every practice. I suspect he looked better than Hunt in practice and fell apart in games. But even at that, you're not going to yank him after one bad game in his first start (PSU) because you still don't know whether it was just gameday jitters or a larger problem. By game 3 he was being rotated out - how much faster did you want it to happen? If anything the Allen situation shows me that the staff makes business decisions and when they realize a decision isn't working, they address it as quickly as possible.

With AJ, my guess is that the staff probably wanted to redshirt him if possible because he still isn't physically mature - he may be performing well, but at what cost? If he stays healthy, odds are he's going to be much better as a 5th year senior than a true freshman. So the staff went with the QB that led the team to a winning season last year, was the MVP of our bowl and has the best handle of the playbook. I don't think anyone expected Hunt to regress but that's what has happened and by the 3rd or 4th game of the season it was pretty obvious. Was that solely on him, a result of McDonald struggling to call plays, a little bit of both? I'm not sure. There are a lot of moving parts here.

My simple formula: last two games of 2013 Hunt > 2014 Long > first 10 games of 2013 Hunt > 2014 Hunt

If we can ever get the Hunt who played for us the last two games of 2013 we might be onto something. But outside of those 2 games Hunt hasn't shown me much that shows he is a better QB then Long. Next year the formula changes is: last two games of 2013 Hunt > 2015 AJ Long? I am guessing no. The obvious flaw in my logic is Hunt could improve somehow but I think the Long will also improve this offseason, that it will be a much bigger improvement then anything Hunt can show.

Long story short I don't think Hunt starts at QB at the beginning of the year anyways.

Sorry, but that right there is the problem with Hunt. P5 qb's need to be able to execute simple throws routinely, and Hunt rarely hit receivers, even stationary ones, in stride, even on short passes and was a disaster on intermediate to long throws. His much vaunted running ability, while above average, was not enough to compensate for lackluster passing ability-. I would rather have Troy Nunes in his senior year over Hunt on his best day, at least what we have seen so far out of the guy. Love Hunt's personal story and no doubt he's a gamer, but he's not a good enough qb to get us over the hump.

this is spot on...
