I always thought that Welch was on scholarship, but I don't follow these things as closely as a lot of other guys on the football board.

Not saying there's a parallel, but it's interesting to note that Lombardi Award winner DE Carl Nassib (Yes, Ryan's brother) was a walk on (@ PSU) who slowly blossomed and even played for the Tampa Bay Bucs last year. Baker Mayfield was a walk on @Texas Tech who eventually won the Heisman @ OU. Not to mention Szymt.
