Syracuse, N.Y. — Eric Dungey and Tim Lester hit it off right away when the Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, Ore.) High School senior quarterback and Syracuse offensive coordinator sat down together two weeks ago on Lester's visit.
The two discussed Dungey's scholarship offer, playing quarterback in college and the future of the Orange's offense. Forty-five minutes later, the conversation was over and Dungey was already looking into his official visit.
"I just kind of wanted to make a decision as soon as possible," Dungey said over the phone on Monday afternoon. "I was very grateful that they took me. I literally called and asked, and they had the plane ticket the next day."
Dungey, who
announced his verbal commitment on Sunday, visited Syracuse last week and called the school a "perfect" fit. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound signal-caller is the Orange's only quarterback pledge in the 2015 class and could be one of six quarterbacks in preseason camp next summer.
Terrel Hunt, AJ Long, Austin Wilson and Mitch Kimble are all eligible to return and Alin Edouard is
expected to arrive in January.
"I went to visit and i just fell in love with it," Dungey said. "I just felt really comfortable there. They have a great plan for the future."
Dungey is ranked three stars by the major recruiting services and is widely considered the best quarterback prospect from Oregon in his class. He chose Syracuse over Wyoming, Yale and Harvard, among other offers, and threw for 2,217 yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season, according to OregonLive.com.
Dungey also rushed for 868 yards and 14 scores.
"He could be a Division I safety," Lakeridge head coach John Parke said of Dungey's athleticism. "I think he's the second-fastest kid on the team."
Dungey said his visit to Syracuse made his decision to commit an easy one. In addition to spending more time with Lester — whom he described as the most personable coach who recruited him — and meeting head coach Scott Shafer, Dungey toured campus and met current SU players.
Hunt, the redshirt junior who
had his season cut short in early October due to a fractured fibula, spent "eight to 10 hours" with Dungey, talking about the program and school.
"I got along with him really well," Dungey said. "He's a great guy. He's motivated and he's just a good guy to be around. I'm excited to learn from him."
Dungey made his decision to commit to Syracuse before this weekend, he said, but wanted to inform recruiters from his other suitors of his decision before making it public.
Now, the three-sport athlete turns his focus to basketball and baseball before he arrives in Syracuse next summer. Dungey said he'll keep working on his footwork and drops until then, and is excited to compete come preseason camp.
"I'm going to compete no matter what," Dungey said. "Whatever happens, happens."
Dungey said he is fully committed to Syracuse, though his verbal pledge is non-binding until he signs a letter of intent in February.
