Class of 2025 QB Luke Carney (TX) COMMITTED / SIGNED NLI TO SYRACUSE (12/4/24)

Maybe its been stated already but I didn't realize he went to IMG Acacdemy as an 8th grader.

Can't wait to see what this kid can do. If we hit on him and he turns into a very good QB that brings the success of the 2025 recruiting class through the roof. He'll make everyone else better. I think he can be Elite. But even if he doesn't quite get there to elite it just looks like this kid should have a very high floor. I mean he is coming in as a freshman at 6'-2" and 205 lbs. Kid is very athletic, fast and muscular. He moves very well in the pocket. Not afraid to hang in there to the last second and take a shot either. He can run it and sling it and has an elite completion percentage which means he is likely very accurate. Looks very comfortable and under control. He appears to have excellent mechanics and just looks natural in everything he does. He lead his team to a state championship as a freshman so leadership seems likely to be a strength. He honestly looks a lot like a Drew Brees type of player to me.

I think we got a shot to have a 3-starter here. Maybe 4 a la McNabb if we can keep him those last few years.

Obviously don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I think he’s got a legit shot.

Tbh I think Carney’s potential is Sam Hartman. They play similar, built similar and have similar strengths and weaknesses. I’m not saying he is Sam Hartman right now by any means. But if he reaches his potential here, I think they will be very similar

Yeah it would be great if we can keep in college for like 9 years as a starting QB.

Senior year highlights just added to Hudl the other day:

Kid’s got some Dungey in him!
The hurdle - LOL!!!

Great arm, keeps his head up looking to throw.

Great wheels too, and fairly elusive in the open field.

And he comes in with college size, so we don’t hafta wait for him to fill out to be able to compete.

The guy that comes to mind for me is Jaxson Dart. Carney looks like he might be even quicker.

Usually when you watch a prospects film, you can find something to critique even in their supposed “highlights”. There is nothing about him I don’t like. his film is impressive. If you told me he was a high four-star going to Ohio State, I would not be surprised.

for those who may be concerned about the lower level competition, keep in mind he is not throwing curls and slants to wide open receivers (in his film anyway) He is throwing deep balls to where the receiver is going to be. so whether it’s a division one receiver being covered by a division one one corner, or two guys who will never play football again, it does not matter. The separation is the same, and the timing of the throw is the same.

I think it will be very hard to keep him off the field. If Jakhari or the LSU transfer can, even better for us.

Would be staggering for him to win the job over Jakhari/Rickie
Considering he's a true freshman, and the other guys have a lot more years in P4 programs, I suspect Carney will have to be better, and not just by a little, to wind up the starter.

Even Fran mf Brown has to worry about the appearances game when it comes to taking a highly rated transfer and talking a highly rated player into staying, and then starting a true freshman over them.

It better be one of those "even the players themselves can see it" type situations, or the whole of team chemistry could be harmed.

It would be amazing if the other guys are good, but true freshman Carney still beats them out handily and wins the starting job.
