Class of 2020 QB Malik Hornsby (TX) Portal from Arkansas to Texas St

I’m not sure you got the right track on Spann. I think he’s in a little deeper than you think with Syracuse

What I got is what's public.

On June 12 he listed a top 6 of Louisville, Duke, Ole Miss, FSU, Illinois and UCF

On August 4th he says he's reopening his recruitment. Does this mean he's dissolving his top 6? IDK

Not one twitter mention of Syracuse and not one news article in Florida mentioning Syracuse as a player.

If I'm wrong that would be fine with me. He looks a lot like Malik Hornsby. Dual Threat QB who's tall, runs great and has a long release.

I live in Texas and follow Texas high school recruiting very closely. Hornsby is a guy who was highly rated early as an athletic QB, but his QB skills haven't been developing as anticipated and as a result his stock is falling like a rock. He was a silent to A&M before they dropped him. Mack Brown at UNC scooped him up and dropped him. The early attention went to his head and he supposedly has a high maintenance parent. Schools from Texas have backed way off. I want no part of him at Syracuse even though our QB recruiting has been suspect for several years now.

Maybe UNC dropped him because they have a commitment from an Elite 11 finalist Jacolby Criswell ?

Texas and Texas A&M both have commitments from Elite 11 finalist QBs.

Ryan Nassib was a 2* QB coming out of HS.
Got paid to hold Eli's clipboard for a few years - not a bad gig right out of college.

It's really interesting, the three 5* QB's recruited in Nassib's same class, were:
Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State
Dayne Crist, Notre Dame
EJ Manuel, Florida State

And some of the other, NOT 5* guys, were:
Notable QBs: Blaine Gabbert, Missouri; Andrew Luck, Stanford; Robert Griffin III, Baylor; Collin Klein, Kansas State; Landry Jones, Oklahoma; Mike Glennon, Virginia Tech; Ryan Nassib, Syracuse

I see you have your "stars don't matter" speech queued up. Cool. It is well worn territory and, frankly, at this point a boring and unproductive debate. Your problem, though, is you've queued it up over the wrong player.

Yes, some guys are overlooked or underrated by the services. Dungey (arguably) is one of those guys. Famously, the Pac 12 schools overlooked him and he ended up at Syracuse, much to the gain of Syracuse.

Hornsby isn't Dungey. He isn't some underrated guy overlooked by the P5 schools in his region. Hornsby is the 204 ranked recruit in the nation according to the 247 composite. Despite this lofty ranking, the local schools want nothing to do with him.

QB isn't like other positions. Yes, there is an important physical talent component, and that is certainly a factor. But every position has physical attributes a school must assess and project. QB is different because it is the most cerebral position in all of sports. You have to nail the mental evaluation. Leadership qualities are also disproportionately important at QB. As anyone who follows Texas high school recruiting will tell you, Hornsby has a bad reputation in this area (I do not know the kid personally, just relaying reputation - so take with as large a grain of salt as warranted).

QB's tend to commit early, because they understand their leadership role and typically relish the chance to help recruit for their class. Going by the 247 composite, only 2 of the top 25 QB's (and 5 of the top 50) in the class of 2020 are uncommitted - Hornsby and CJ Stroud. Stroud is an outlier because he was a 3 star prospect who unexpectedly won the Elite 11, and thus got a flood of increased interest from top schools. It makes sense for a guy like that to slow down and assess. Hornsby is the opposite - highly ranked and falling fast. It seems like a lot of schools are concluding Hornsby is more athlete than QB.

I think people are scared of having a running qb because Dungey was 1/3 of his career. What about the other running qb's we've had that didn't get hurt or the running qb's other schools have that don't get hurt. Not every qb needs to run like a fullback like Dungey did.

We don't know what the OL would look like with a healthy Heckel in the middle.

Wouldn't call Gregory Spann scraping the bottom of the barrel. Also Nezat, the kid we have on the shortlist of options, visited LSU last weekend. The staff knows what they're doing.

That's still up for debate in QB recruiting. This is the 2nd straight cycle of missing out on all their top targets after also missing all of them in the previous year as well prior to Chance switching over on signing day before eventually bailing anyway.

This argument was the worst. I knew it was coming when I was on page 2 and saw his post this response came to. Someone always has to do it. You might as well list the other 50 3* QBs too that no one has ever heard of. Cherry picking after the fact is ridiculous.

Looks like he's still aiming a little higher with FSU, LSU and Oregon in the picture. We're not competing with them but could battle Houston, Maryland & Purdue if the others aren't committable.

My guess is that he has an academics issue. After he decommitted from UNC in June he only got one more offer, from UMD in Sept before the evaluation period. And I don't see where he took any ovs after UNC.
