Class of 2016 QB Mo Hasan (FL) Preferred Walk On Commits to Syracuse

Let's not get too excited for what is essentially still a walk-on. Walk-ons won't change the course of our program.

A preferred walk-on is a smart way to add to needed depth and to bring in quality players without having to use a scholarship. The state schools and larger programs do it all the time to get around the scholarship cap.

A walk-on like JJ Watt would certainly help change the course of our program. Obviously he's an anomaly, but if you get enough quality guys to walk on some will end up being productive players for us.

Agreed, we always have the challenge of tuition vs in state rates for big state schools.

In thinking further on Mo and the tape I saw I think the first thing he is going to help is the secondary in practice. We have been burned over the top quite a bit over the years now most would argue that is system related it will still help the first steamers to go against a guy who throws down field in addition to the talents of our other QBs.

Steamers eh?

So basically, this recruit didn't have great offers out of high school, but had very good grades. He applies to colleges he wants to walk-on at, and reaches out to the staff with his details/tape. He gets in to Cuse and is offered an academic scholarship to attend. He follows up with the staff and they start recruiting him as a preferred walk on, with the premium part being that he already has financial aid?

twin brother?

You mean the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots?! Cool!
Not the Patriots version of him obviuosly, the version of him when he got to Eastern Illinois and Babers got a hold of him. . Similar characteristics.

I know. I just wanted to take a poke at the Brady fans out there! :D
I didnt even catch that and Im one of the biggest Pats fans you would know outside of Massachusetts. Good stuff. BTW Im not worried. I havent been worried in 18 years.

He's still a walkon. If they aren't valued enough for a scholarship there isn't enough talent to move the needle on turning us into a winning program.

This is dollar and a dream mentality. I guess anything is possible just not probable. Recruiting players accepted at Lehigh will not move the needle for us to win more games. Scholarship or not. Just won't. Surprised you didn't mention Michael Jordan not making his JV team. Let's save money and not offer scholarships any more and have 85 walkons so we get enough players where some will end up being productive players for us. wow.

Ask Nassib's brother Carl about that...

Go ahead and mention all 25 walkons that have been successful over the last 50 years as delusional rationalization that our walkons will also be successful. All this losing has our fanbase stretching for anything.
Make sure you mention all the high school dropouts that are millionaires and all the people you know who win money in lotteries and casinos.

Settle down cowboy, was just pointing out that they can make a difference. Sorry someone pissed you off so badly you have to act this way. :noidea:

Well since we will still be recruiting and fielding a team of 85 scholarship players, why don't you explain to me why we shouldn't be excited to add quality walk-ons as well. You know what college teams have a bunch of really good walk-on players? The best ones.

I really like this kid, its perplexing how a 3* qb with this size and release only had offers from lehigh and howard. What's wrong here?

From our standpoint--nothing. Bring in as many QB prospects with ability that we can, and let them sort it out on the practice field. If other schools missed out on Hasan, too bad for them. Their loss could be our gain.

And as we saw with Mahoney, just because you're a walk on doesn't mean that you don't have potential and can't contribute. It will be interesting to see how this kid's career unfolds--whether he earns a scholarship eventually, whether he's a fit for the new offense, and whether he eventually cracks the two-deep. One thing is for certain: generally speaking, kids who play and produce at a high level on powerhouse teams in Florida typically have the tools.

I saw a 4th string guy with accuracy issues play with the game on the line in the 4th Q vs the national runner ups just last season. But honestly who cares? Walkons are good for any program. There is no downside. Must be because he's from FL and not NY?

I think we stole one here, this guy looks great. Seems so comfortable in everything he does.

Great find ... a kid like this will probably be busting his tail to get a scholly.
Broward County is watched by hundreds of College Coaches...he is what he is...a 1AA recruit that has upside. Still a great get and the family should be able to swing the $$$ for anything not covered by his academic scholie. If he progresses and makes it up the depth chart there "should" be a full scholie down the road...that is the way I read it.

several walkons be pretty good players in the last 5-6 years.

nebraska made a living with walkons starting at key spots for years, other schools like VT and texas a&m have done it too.. we have had 2-3 walkons be pretty good players in the last 5-6 years.

Seems like a smart, high-character kid based upon the awards received and certainly is a welcome addition to the program. Walk-ons certainly add much to a program and are rarely a bad thing. However, projecting him out to be a significant contributor on the field or making the two deep in the future seems a little fantastical.

Molding walk-ons into starters/rotation guys, especially at QB, is certainly not a position this program wants to consistently be in if we are trying to get back to being a consistent, winning, bowl eligible program. I am hopeful that the new scheme makes it easier to bring in talented QB's in the future so we won't have to be wonder if our walk-on QB's have the chops to make it on game day. Unfortunately, until that day comes we still have to consider if a walk-on is going to be an integral of our program at QB in the future. Not an enviable position to be in at this time.

Edit: Forgot to mention that one of the best things about this particular player is he went to Dillard HS in Fla. which would be a nice school to continue to mine and the new staff is very active there.
