QB position

I imagine the talent pool at JUCOs is not always very deep. If so, then all DM can do is take the best that is there to fill needs.
Why imagine that? There are lots of schools that use JUCO help effectively.

If you mean there may not be JUCOs in our region, or players who have an interest in SU, that is another story. My observation is that Marrone & staff have found JUCO help to add toughness and size and -- when they recognize some gaps (DL this season), they can pull from the West Coast (Jones & Pierce-Brewster; maybe Garrick if his knee recovers; Googins, Alexander for OT) or maybe downstate (Johnson who is pending NCAA clearance). Just don't seem to have much interest or success in supplementing with JUCO skill guys.

But I hope that Hunt is the real deal so we don't have issues if Nassib can't play every down.

I meant that you can't count on JUCO's having what you need when you need it. Also, we aren't the only ones after those that we need. We are fortunate to have a couple of pipelines with NYS JUCOs.

I forgot about the flashing incident. I guess that is why they came up with slash!

Not JUCOs, but does anyone know if there are any prospects at nearby Milford we should be looking at?

I wonder about the logic -- when Marrone and staff will go JUCO and when they won't. He has brought in JUCO help almost exclusively for the OL and the DL -- with Diabate (LB-Nassau) and Fisher (S-Nassau) being the exceptions. Cruz & Weaver were special examples as transfers, and there we went for size.

We have been thin at skill positions; not much speed at WR; no back-up QB in 2010 or 2011; thin and young at LB -- no JUCOs (except Diabate at LB).

Just have to wonder if Marrone wants to go the JUCO for playmakers.

This is a good question -- one I've thought about on occasion from a slightly different perspective. I've always wondered if it wasn't a bad idea to bring in quite a few JUCOs early in a tenure to try to quickly build depth and, potentially, hit a home run with a Taj Smith or someone even better. I get why it's not ideal long-term and I know we don't really want to be KSU in this regard, but I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't have been worth bringing in 7-8 JUCOs for the first couple classes. I could be completely wrong.

I'd take this a step further and ask if we know for sure that there won't be a JUCO that surfaces between now and Feb.? I feel like -- as someone with admittedly no inside info -- there are JUCO names that come out of nowhere every January. Could they covertly be at least keeping tabs on a couple JUCO QB possibilities?

Good JUCO QB's are few and far between. Cam Newton is a very rare case.

I don't think our staff would ever recruit a JUCO QB.

I don't really consider Cam to be a true Juco player, having been a Florida Gator.

At the end of last season I remember hearing Nassib say that Hunt has all the tools to be a very good QB. From everything I have heard the team and the coaching staff is very high on him. Even after his run-in they chalked it up to a mistake. Most of them couldn't even believe that it happened.
I have a buddy who talked to father hackett after one of the games last season. Him and his wife were parked in the same lot my friend was tailgating in. My friend said father hackett was a very nice guy. He hung out with them for 10 mins after the game. My friend said father hackett told him that he likes Terrel Hunt just from what he saw in practices and stuff like that. That was the extent on that subject. Again this is coming from the dad , not the son. I think this says alot coming from a former a guy with his experience.

There a a couple of very good programs on LI including Nassau CC. Sirike Diabate, Orlando Fisher
and
DeFarrel Davis all came from NCC. They have another great team this year.

I suspect your conclusion is right (our staff won't go that direction for a QB), but not for the reason you give.
Every JUCO team with a dynamic offense likely has a good QB. Not Cam Newton good, but it shouldn't be too hard to find QBs who could do more than Kinder and Loeb have shown in Spring games.
UConn landed a JUCO QB out of Kansas in the past year -- maybe Paul P knows something?

Coach Marrone has gone the JUCO route more often than his predecessor. Not as much as KSU or other programs, but he has been bringing in 3 or 4 a year. It just seems that he goes for size and toughness (Ball, Googins, Alexander, Cruz, Hay, Tiller, Jones) not speed and play-making ability. It makes sense -- we needed all that help in the trenches. I am just greedy -- a WR, RB, and a dual-threat QB would have made a big difference last season.

Yeah, Coach P knows how horrible his other options were.

Tip has a problem because Ashton dropped is pants when he was pissed. I actually thought Flash was pretty funny and i doubt that AB would find it anything but funny

Yup. It's a funny nickname. And yes, the kid is entitled to put one mistake behind him.

We just offered a RB from Milford - Charles Davis. He's a smaller back 5-9 190 pounds w/ 4.42 speed. Was a ** last year and had a Mississippi offer.

Hopefully he knows he just landed Chad Elliott part II. That would be good for us.
Well, Paul P. has back the two QBs who combined to beat us, a third QB who got some snaps, plus a highly rated frosh QB from Connecticut who started in January, and still he brought in a highly rated JUCO (Chandler Whitmer from a JUCO in Kansas) who threw for over 2800 yds.

And we have Nassib who took all our snaps in 2011 and we hope Hunt can be his back-up.

I was just saying hopefully he's as successful as Elliott. It was a poorly delivered joke.

Thanks--Milford seems really important pipeline for our program, given the relative proximity to campus.

Appreciate the update.

One could argue that he did something like that for QB is his first season.

Yes, and it helped create some interest, and had some impact on the field. But that was a special case -- a hometown kid who wanted to use that extra year to play some football. Not necessarily Doug's decision to find a quality juco to be a good #2 at QB.

My observation is that he has put a lot of faith in the ability of Nassib & Bailey to stay healthy in the past two seasons. We have depth at RB this year, but have to be a tad worried about QB depth and the quality of competition for 2013.
