Class of 2023 QB Rickie Collins (LA) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (12/20/24)

Well, well, well. I like that he has 3 years of eligibility remaining. Quite an opportunity for Rickie to take this program and make it his own for the next few years. Jump in and get immediate playing time in an offense that hummed last year and a program on the rise.

I know that he had an impressive offer sheet out of high school, but what does he do well? He's played sparingly, so I don't really have a gauge on what SU would be getting.

worried that a transfer like this might cause Jakhari to look at his options vs a 1 year rental
Thankfully, Fran does not think this way. The QBs will all compete and the best will play. This is who Fran is and this is how SU should act if we want to compete at a high level.

Guessing we have one spot open and the first to commit gets that spot.

Pretty sure we will not offer until they are on campus and the staff has a chance to see the players in person and ensure they are a good fit, in terms of skill, character and culture.
Fran made a point to say that trait that he’s looking for from a qb is “winner.” Can he feel confident on that point with a guy like Collins who hasn’t proven anything? I don’t have a pov, just trying to piece together what might actually happen.

Exactly. We have no idea how good Jakhari is. Nobody should fret that we might lose him at this point. He could turn out to be good or he may not. Considering how young Jakhari is, what he has shown in games (nothing) and his recruiting ranking, what better option is going to be out there for Jakhari? Good programs have depth and multiple options at QB. Its how it is. If he wants a more guaranteed shot at playing this year he would need to go to a lower level. He can't be afraid of a little competition. Best player plays. We have to bring in at least one other options at QB this year and Fran knows this. I'm guessing Jahari understands this as well.

it’s a good question how were his high school teams.

I'm not sure you were trying to be condescending, but that's how it came off.

If you are from the school of "bring in talent and cultivate it," this approach can definitely be detrimental to high school recruiting, the QB room, etc. If your approach is bring in the best guy every year and let the chips fall where they may, that's fine too, but it's a different approach.

Looks like Fran may be in favor of the latter. We'll find out if ultimately that is the better approach. It definitely worked with McCord and made perfect sense in that case. I'm at a point where I am onboard, but it's going to put significant stress on both high school recruiting and NIL relationships.

Personally, my preference is to "grow your own" but I think that is probably antiquated thinking these days.

I see it a little bit differently. I think Fran favors bringing in the best players he can, from whatever source he can. Fran has already stated clearly that he prefers to build the team via HS player recruiting. But the portal provides opportunities to add talented players at key positions of need -- and he'd be limiting the program to not think of it as such.

I think most fans would love for a Williams or a Carney to pan out and be "the answer" long term. But there's no guarantee that either or both of them will pan out.

And I don't think Fran can worry about how bringing in talent affects kids on the roster. Heck, we just had a player who STARTED as a true frosh elect to portal out. It is going to happen, can't walk on eggshells about an unproven player potentially leaving.

So to me I like bringing this guy in to push Jakhari. Iron sharpens iron. Best man wins and hopefully the table is set for a couple years if one of them is successful. This is premised on Fran and Nixon believing Jakhari has what it takes in their eyes and so are good letting the two young bucks take the reigns.

We all saw what a great QB can do for your program. For some of us we have been fortunate to see it multiple times in our lives. Fran understands that without a good QB we don't win. If he is able to get a proven college QB i believe he will do that every time vs rolling the dice on player who ran the scout team

Grow your own would be great but every kid is a free agent, bring in the best guys who fit your culture, let the best man win and try to maintain depth as much as you can. Roster retention is a challenge these days, that is a problem everywhere. With roster expansion the portal is just going to get more crowded

Very interesting prospect reading up on him. Profiles as a pocket passer with extreme athletic ability.

I agree Phil but one that that I really liked about McCord is that he didn't run that much. He kept behind the LOS and kept looking to pass which I always wanted Dungey and Shrader to do. Sometimes guys that can run, tend to run too quickly and not only that, linemen tend to drift because they think he's running and one thing we noticed was there weren't many if at all linemen down the field to far when McCord passed.

And yes, I get it that a poor OL forced a lot of that but let's hope that's a thing of the past.

I think the concern with grow your own is even that's far from a lock. What happens if one of our young guys ball out and big SEC $ comes calling that we can't match?

It's a difficult situation to manage, no perfect solution but as Don Draper says, "that's what the money's for."

Competition brings out the best in everyone. Even the blue chip schools bring in 5-stars every year. Kids at that level aren't concerned with who's in front.

Your last paragraph is the key: does Georgia worry about “scaring off” QBs? Hell no. Fran doesn’t either.
