QB Room

Others have mentioned this already, but I'm on board with scouring the FCS ranks for an experienced QB. Now that I had to get ESPN Unlimited this month, I've been watching the Mercer - Furman game. The Mercer QB is better than anyone we have besides Angeli.

QB Room

A few quarterbacks in the transfer portal I’d like Syracuse to pursue, along with why they’d fit Jeff Nixon’s system Drew Mestemaker (North Texas) — Mestemaker is a freshman who’s already showing poise and the ability to read defenses quickly. He would thrive in Nixon’s balanced scheme, which values quick decision-making and progression reads. His mobility and pocket presence would allow him to make the offense dynamic, mixing timing passes with option-style plays. As a portal target, he’s young, highly coachable, and ready to step into a system that can accelerate his development. Austin Mack (Alabama) — Mack is a 6’6” pure pocket passer with a rocket arm and excellent field vision. He fits perfectly into Nixon’s pro-style offense, which emphasizes timing routes, play-action, and stretching the field vertically. As a portal option, Mack brings immediate talent and experience from a top program, giving Syracuse a potential instant upgrade at QB while also providing leadership for younger players.Jadyn Davis (Michigan) — Davis has elite field vision, accuracy, and decision-making. He’s a natural fit for Nixon’s system that emphasizes pre-snap reads and multiple progression passes. In the portal, he represents a high-upside option who can compete for the starting job and thrive in a system designed to highlight his arm strength and intelligence, while also adding depth to the quarterback room.

We have had great success in the portal but IMO that is more luck and not sustainable long term.

I would go with the following strategy...

Low level portal QB who is happy being part of a P4 program, making P4 NIL, getting an SU education, and will be serviceable if needed as QB2. Guys like Mahoney or Welch would fit here. Once you have one of these guys you don't need to recruit another until they leave, which will be 1-3 years depending on their eligibility. That way you have a security blanket at QB2.

A HS QB who can be serviceable in an emergency as a RS FR. So they RS as a true FR and if the situation arises are good enough to be serviceable as a RS FR. They will likely want PT and transfer out eventually, but they are there if need be as a youngin. A guy like Morgan fits here. You will try to find guys like this yearly.

Also there is always a chance a kid like this ends up being a diamond in the rough and becomes your QB1. Hunt would probably fit that. Does Dungey count too here?

A portal long shot raw SEC QB. This one is a pure gamble but could pay off. You are not expecting anything from these guys. If they pan out, you have yourself a high level starter. If they don't, it is QB4 so hopefully you never need them. Guys like CDRW and Davis.

Once every 4 years find a guy who will RS as a true FR. Get minimal PT as a RS FR. Take over a a starter as a RS Soph for the next 3 years. Like we did with Nassib.

What happens when that guy doesn't pan out? Well that is what happened here with DeVito. In which case you have to get a portal starter to replace that kid. From time to time that will happen, you can't always hit on your QB1 HS kids. But the portal starters IMO should only be used to fill in holes not as a strategy to find QB1.

So IMO Fran needs to go out and...

1. find a Mahoney for 2026
2. find a CDRW for 2026
3. decide whether Belin/Lott fit as Nassibs or Morgans.
4. if neither are a Nassib find a Nassib for 2027
5. find a Morgan for 2027

That would give us for next year:

QB1: Angeli
QB2: Mahoney Guy
QB3: Belin (if a Nassib then QB2)
QB4: CDRW Guy (if strike gold then QB2)
Redshirt: Lott

And the year after assuming Belin is not a future QB1:

QB1: Angeli
QB2: Mahoney Guy 1 or new Mahoney
QB3: Lott (if Nassib QB2)
QB4: CDRW Guy 1 or new CDRW (if strike gold QB2)
Redshirt: Morgan Guy, Nassib Guy (if Lott is not)

Steve is coming back and is expected to be the starter next year, and I fully expect him to develop into an elite quarterback for Syracuse. We still have two more years with him leading the offense, which is huge for stability. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carney enters the transfer portal after the way Fran Brown handled his freshman season — it’s understandable from his perspective. Rich’s future is uncertain, Williams is gone, and in my opinion, Joe Filardi might even move to lacrosse permanently .Looking ahead, we have Lott coming in from the 2026 class. I’ve been following him closely, and I actually think he’s an elite prospect — just not ranked where he should be. In my opinion, he should be considered a 4-star quarterback. That highlights the bigger issue I see with Syracuse’s QB room: this staff needs to focus on bringing in highly ranked quarterbacks straight out of high school. We can’t keep relying on undersized, 3-star, pocket-passer types. To build an elite quarterback pipeline — one that can handle departures to the portal or NFL — Syracuse needs elite 4-star talent at the position. I love the way Fran recruits and the energy he brings to the program, but this is an area where the team can improve. Syracuse has a rich history of developing talent, and with the right high school QBs coming in consistently, we could finally have a quarterback room that matches that tradition. I fully believe Fran will recognize this soon and make it a priority, because to compete at a high level in the ACC, elite quarterback talent is absolutely essential.
Do you know for a fact Fran has handled him poorly?! I’m going to guess that Fran who is a great recruiter wouldn’t do that. Recruits wouldn’t come here and parents would object if in fact he was treating his players poorly. This is nonsense. The kid has a weak arm and he doesn’t want to put him in a poor situation to fail.

I won’t disagree with you I was just stating what most of the forum was saying .

Forum is full of H0T Takes that are bs. People can’t accept the fact the staff missed on Collins and option 3 and 4 aren’t good enough.
I was trying to explain to them that we need to start recruiting 4 star and elite quarterbacks from the high school level so we don’t have to go in the portal every year.

FFS Fran did, he offered by position rank #s 1,3,13,16, 22, 24, 27, 31, 34, 35, and 42nd ranked QBs and they all went elsewhere. He does recruit them they just signed elsewhere and that is just the 2026 class.

What’s even funnier is that if you look at the top passers in NCAA the first 4/5 star out of high school you will find is Maiava of USC at #14. Stars aren’t the end all … the top 2 passers (Angeli and Mendoza) at the time of Angelia injury were 3 stars.
