prob need him to commit today and not take other visits? portal closes Friday
Dude, if Angeli was a Mccord type of player no one would say a word.Players have zero loyalty and are looking for bags. Why should Fran show any loyalty. If he can upgrade the web position then he should do it. Zero reason to
Complain about bringing in a McCord type of player. Every year the backup qb is the best player on the team. Williams was a stud everyone said. I trust Fran and if he can add a qb that will give us a chance this year then he should bring him in.
Small sample size but he looked really good in their bowl game. And even though he’s a pocket passer he still is mobile enough when needed like McCord. That throw against Pitt around the :45 second mark is really good
What a crazy thought. Guys that need some seasoning and aren’t quite game ready today. It worked for SMU to have two guys battle it out.Just a guess here but maybe Collins won the job against guys that weren't doing well in practice. Fran sees a guy that can improve the room.
Maybe he entered the portal specifically to come here?prob need him to commit today and not take other visits? portal closes Friday

My point is not and never has been that I’m such a big Collins guy I need him to be the starter, my point is naming him QB1 was just a misstep in my opinion. If he didn’t do that I wouldn’t have said a word about adding Angeli, it’s just to me Fran Brown has now put himself in a position where he has to walk back everything he said, which again, to me is bad optics. If he wanted to keep his options open why not wait until after the spring portal to publicly name a QB1?Bad optics? Seems like you're really hung up on him being named starter out of spring practice.
Things change in college football faster than ever in terms of roster composition, in the portal era.
Look, I hope that Collins is the second coming of Donovan McNabb. I hope he kills it here, is our starter for the next three years, and parlays strong performance into an NFL career. But if the past 30 years has taught us anything, it's that even highly rated QB prospects don't always pan out -- and we've had our share of high profile misses over the years.
Even recently, a highly touted guy like Carlos Del Rio Wilson had recruiting pedigree, was transferring from a high profile SEC program, had the right kind of physical attributes to warrant the star rating, but wasn't a very good QB.
Meanwhile, we've had lower rated guys like Dungey far outshoot his recruiting ranking.
Point being, its a crapshoot. It's even a crapshoot at factory programs like Ohio State and Georgia, that land 4- and 5-star QBs every year -- they don't all pan out.
Which is why it is important to add the best players you can land, and let the rest sort itself out. If Angeli transfers here and Collins beats him out -- that's awesome. And if Angeli comes here and is BETTER than Collins, that's awesome, too, because it means that we aren't locked into a starting QB who doesn't have the chops.
I have no idea how it will work out. Neither does anybody else, because we haven't seen Collins. But it is an awfully big risk to roll into the season with somebody unproven.
You guys don’t understand my point. Clearly. If Collins was a McCord type player Angeli wouldn't be on campus.

Let me put it in work terms, you and a co worker are in competition to take over a big project, after a while your boss says you’re the guy, says to the rest of the office PhatOrange is our guy and we’re all behind him. Then 2 weeks later they say sorry PhatOrange were bringing in someone else. How are you feeling? How are your coworkers feeling? Wouldn’t you have preferred they waited to name you the guy until they actually knew what they wanted to do going forward?Maybe we'll be better off if he goes to Tennessee so we can maintain good optics and locker room cohesion.![]()
I mean, this is pretty much wrapped up. He’s been linked to our program for a couple years now as a possibility. He has a ton of connections to our program. If this goes past this week I’d be pretty shocked. I expect him to be Orangeprob need him to commit today and not take other visits? portal closes Friday
Nobody puts PhatOrange in the corner.Let me put it in work terms, you and a co worker are in competition to take over a big project, after a while your boss says you’re the guy, says to the rest of the office PhatOrange is our guy and we’re all behind him. You aren't feeling very good. But how is the company doing? They were able to bring in someone that the company believes can do the job better than you can. And in business, it is all about creating shareholder value. In sports, it's about winning. No one here thinks Collins will be happy with this. As for how the team thinks, we don't know. I suspect if they think Angeli is better, they will be happy.Let me put it in work terms, you and a co worker are in competition to take over a big project, after a while your boss says you’re the guy, says to the rest of the office PhatOrange is our guy and we’re all behind him. We named Pena the captain and that changed. In today's college football world, things change...almost on a daily basis. Especially during open portal windows. You never know when your starter will up and leave. Most QB's portal knowing where they are going to go.Maybe he entered the portal specifically to come here?
(No inside info but timing seems interesting)
I agree with all of that, but when there was no deadline on naming someone the guy, no upside in doing it so early, it’s just off to me. If they hadn’t named Collins QB1 publicly I would have zero issue with this anyway. I don’t even have an issue with it now tbh I just do not like the way Fran Brown handled it and think it could’ve been done in a much better way.You aren't feeling very good. And we all S*** on Pena for the way he went about it didn’t we? Yes things change but Fran Brown isn’t a 19 year old chasing a bag, he’s the head coach of our program. We named Pena the captain and that changed. Well if PhatOrange was unable to make the initial project presentation to the board because of some undefined health reason it would certainly be more understandable to bring someone else in.Let me put it in work terms, you and a co worker are in competition to take over a big project, after a while your boss says you’re the guy, says to the rest of the office PhatOrange is our guy and we’re all behind him. This is all under the assumption Rickie’s injury is bigger than being led on, which also if that’s the case my point is moot.Well if PhatOrange was unable to make the initial project presentation to the board because of some undefined health reason it would certainly be more understandable to bring someone else in.
Plus no offense to Ricky but the SUFB team isn't here to make sure his feelings don't get hurt. This is a ruthless business and it's Fran's job to WIN

If Collins is ahead of Jakhari, naming him QB1 is doing Jakhari a favor of letting him know this, also he is letting the team know where we stand and who is the current leader of the team moving forward. Also lets them know who they should be prioritizing with chemistry wise while passing on their own in the offseason. If we bring in another QB yet again to compete for that #1 spot to possibly make the team better so be it. Always trying to improve. No issue with this as long as they have always been clear in communication to Collins. This could lead to Jakhari leaving however. That is the only downside. But if it makes our team better this year it makes sense to do it in my book.If the staff didn't think Rickie was good enough, then they shouldn't have named him the starter in the spring. There was no reason to do so because there are no games to start.
And that’s totally fine, I just do have an issue with it and personally would have done it differently. I would’ve preferred him waiting until the dust of the portal settles. I love FB and think he’s great but on this particular topic I would’ve done it differently.Seems pretty straight forward to me -- because things have changed in the portal era, with lots of players entering the transfer market AFTER spring practice sessions.
I have zero problem whatsoever with Fran naming Collins the starter, to establish him for the offseason.
I'm also aware that a player [Pena] indicated concerns about his abilities. Don't know whether that is legit, or just an observation that he isn't McCord. No surprise there -- McCord was a unicorn, the best passer in college football -- nobody is going to replace his capabilities.
The old way of locking players in and not having roster "adds" until summer is in the past. Rosters are much more fluid now. QBs in particular have to expect competition.
It is the coaching staff's job to try to recruit over incumbents, and the responsibility of incumbents to fend off the newcomers or lose their jobs. That's the new normal in college football.
And whether we bring in Angeli or not, Collins has a huge leg up -- he's been here since December, was QB1 in spring practice, and will have the entire rest of the semester to work with his receivers and establish chemistry.
Or he could decide to leave. He could decide to leave anyway. Again, the new normal.
