qoute from baylor board

Ok. Any reason why?
A: It is way too early in this season to proclaim any worst or best nonsense.
B: That said, this team is better than '08–'09 and '10–'11 no matter how you slice it.

One in the same...he has apparently pissed off some of them over there.

Yup that would be me. Criticisms of Scott Drew are not acceptable at all to some on that board. I have watched Baylor and Cuse closely this year, its amazing how similar both teams are from a strengths and weaknesses standpoint. Both teams are stacked in the front court and inexperienced in the back court. The difference at this point is that I believe Cuse is much better coached and will continue to improve while Baylor continues to take plays off and has way too many defensive breakdowns due to lack of focus on details (I am hoping to see this change).

In my opinion Baylor has underachieved several times in the last five years due to poor coaching and voicing that opinion to some on the Baylor board is unacceptable and is equivalent to me not being a "real Baylor fan." I have cited the fact that JB gets criticized at times as well (be it right or not) and JB obviously has a much stronger track record than Drew(it's normal for fans to be critical. Sometimes its fair other times its not. At the end of the day, it's just an opinion). Drew did an amazing job rebuilding the program and making us relevant but that does not mean he can't be criticized for perceived underachievement at times.

That said, I love both schools and am hoping to see a great game tonight. Winning tonight would do a lot more for Baylor than it will for Cuse from a big picture standpoint so although I have fallen in love with Cuse basketball and it's amazing tradition and loyal fan base(was fortunate or unfortunate enough to go to the FF game against Michigan), I must admit that I am pulling for the Bears tonight even though I think Cuse wins by 6-10 points(not going to be super upset about that, which is the great part about this game).

"Cuse has not looked good until this tournament started. Some were saying this could be the worst Cuse team since the late 90's. Given how they have played against better competition, that talk is dying quickly as they have looked very good in Maui. However, they have not played nearly as well on defense as last year's team."

HAHA

i like that board. seems like a very knowledgeable, respectful bunch. also what's it say for Gerry's career when he is still getting mentioned by a random Big12 school some 7 years after he graduated. Mind you he never even played after college.

anyways good to read board that is as passionate, and knowledgeable about an upcoming matchup.

I always thought Drew did an amazing job there, and wish them the best. Should be a fun game

Go Cuse!

Agree, read the board looking for flames & didn't see any!

in defense of Drew, wasn't Baylor's basketball program basically on life support after the Dave Bliss/teammate murder disaster?

Not many coaches would have stepped into that job, but he has turned Baylor into a perennial top 20 program. He seems to always bring in a highly rated recruiting class so the talent is there. I do feel they have had some great teams the past 5 years or so and made a deep run in the tournament a few years back. All things considered I would think the people backing Drew have a great reason too.

Fair enough, as noted I agree that he has done an AMAZING job building the program when it was in ashes. It could be that my expectations are too high but given the talent Drew has brought in some years, it seems like we have underachieved by not even making the NCAA's certain years. I want to see continued improvement, I think Drew can get it done. It's a huge game for Baylor tonight.

Two Elite 8's in the last 5 years is not too shabby.

I think that's a perfectly honest assessment. No problem at all with that.

Big thing in this one is to not allow penetration that forces the centers to step up and allow the lob. Chery and franklin are quick.

Good call, coach. That's the biggest risk here to the defense.

hey if you don't have high expectations what's the point? I agree with you there, and yes they have had some extremely talented teams. I guess I have no followed them as closely the past 2 or 3 years as I did in the past. I just know whenever I watch them and from following recruiting they had some extremely talented teams. Not making the tournament with some of those teams is inexcusable, but also 2 elite 8's in 5 years is elite air.

And a bit schizophrenic - which is probably OrangeBear's beef. He's looking for more consistency, since they are clearly getting the athletes now.

yep I totally get his point and agree. Just not to the point of wanting to replace Drew or anything crazy like that

Ok. Any reason why?

The defense will get better by March. Team defense takes lots of practice before it gets really good.

How good the offense will be depends on how well Ennis and Cooney play. Fair and Grant will most likely make consistent contributions. I give up on Christmas, Coleman, and BMK.

In college guards are the most important players, not the big men, Baylor has recruited some out standing big men, but lacked great guard play. Our bad year with Donte we lost 2 starting guards, Andy before the year, and Eric 10 games in, that would have been an outstanding team with both of them.

While I disagree with the poster going back that far, I personally think this is the worst team since the Donte Greene team. It's not slight on the current team just an appreciation to the squads we've have over the recent years.

Surprised to find myself on the positive side of the argument for this team, but dispite its flaws, this team has some upside potential. In other words, its too early to tell.

Oh I have never once said he should be replaced, he has earned a long stint at Baylor because of what he inherited and where he has brought them. As long as he is recruiting well, we have a have to do great things. More than anything, I want him to hire a competent assisting coaching staff that can help him grow as a coach because I keep seeing the same pattern of mistakes and lack of scheming year after year.

i really think that's the only bad team we have had in the past 10 years. that was probably the worst defensive team JB has ever had at Syracuse. There were some absolutely maddening losses that year as well. Actually the more I think about it that may have been JB's worse team of his career. This years squad will be no where near that just because they do play some defense, and have some experience
