Quadir Copeland/NC St

JB kept lots of difficult players with Q’s talent level around. The troublemakers he asked to leave were either not that good or not that good relative to the talent level on the team (i.e. he didn’t need them anymore). The high level players that were shown the door for bad behavior were guys like DeShaun Williams and Paul Harris (who wasn’t that bad), and that’s because we had great talent coming in the next season, and we didn’t need them. He kept Frank Howard around, for Pete’s sake, even though Hop argued he should be kicked off the team because of his bad behavior. Same with Benny Williams.

so you named some that were asked to leave. there were others too. some more talented than Q. every coach alive has had to do it.

Red's first year he had Mintz, Copeland and Benny? That's a handful for a first-year coach.
FOR SURE.

Benny was a freaking loon, and a divisive presence in the locker room. Mintz, Copeland, and Bell were a trio that was passively aggressive toward Red, disrespecting him as a head coach, and being collectively uncooperative with straight-laced JJ and Maliq.

It wasn't great chemistry, for a first year coach.

Autry should have kicked Copeland off the team. It seems to have worked. Not being a Monday morning QB. Proof is in the pudding.

Your fans want wins. Not 20. Not 25. 30+ like the old days. Pre-season top 10 ranking. This Quadir would have willed this Syracuse team to wins. He’d be the best player.

Donnie 2nd best. But with Quadir on this team actually Donnie might be All ACC. But yeah. Autry messed up.
I would say that 85 to 90 percent on this board were thrilled to see him go. Those of us who felt otherwise were in the vast minority.

He was/is completely insane, but in a good way. I remember in the NC State ACCT game he starred down another player like the Undertaker for a good 15-20 seconds. Like it was so stupid and corny that you couldn't not laugh.
I was very sad when he left. Obviously, I dont know what really went on with him behind the scenes.
Maybe he wasnt salvagable at the time or maybe Red just didnt have the style to rein him in.

In so many ways, he reminded me of Dion Waiters, one of my all time favorites. The attitude and the fun way he played certainly!
The irony is that somehow JB and Hopkins managed to rein him in but let him bloom on the court.
Good enough to be drafted in the top 5 in the NBA.

I cant help but remember that in Reds first year he supposedly had all these malcontents when he took over the team. The only year he had any measure of success.
But how much of the drama and chaos was due to them, and how much was due to an incompetent coach.
Fact of the matter is the last 2 years, without these supposed malcontents, his teams have imploded in the last half of the season. All seem to have given up and do not play with max effort.

Red is just bad in so many ways.
Listen to this press conference and the last one.
Compare to a few other coaches, heck compare to Gerry's latest Siena press conferences.
Most display some vision, accountability, plan, hope, etc.
Red comes off like a tired confused old man.

FWIW no "irony" involved - IF the portal existed when Dion was a player, 144% he gone.

It was only due to having to sit out a year if he left, and also Hop playing "Good Cop" that they were able to hang onto him,
AND get him to buy in to the whole super 6th man role that he thrived in.

Also don't think he was quite the same level of cancer/malcontent that Q was.

AND - it's one thing to have ONE headcase on your team.
But when there are 2 or 3 (Benny & Judah) it becomes a massive problem in the locker room and on the court.

See also: When Jonny left to go Pro, JAB also told Devo AND Paul Harris that they were done here.
He cleaned house of the guys who routinely didn't listen to him.

And the result was the amazing Wes & Andy "Shut it Down" team of 2010.

This Copeland story is such BS. It’s being told like Autry did him dirty. The kid is immature and didn’t go to class. He should take responsibility for his own actions. Instead, he blames the school that recruited him and gave him a chance.
He had offers from Miami, Oregon, Maryland, PSU among others, Syracuse wasn’t unique in Recruting him

I also think he stayed at the time because his mom let him know in no uncertain terms that leaving SU would be a huge mistake.
He talked about this in later interviews - he was not going to ignore his moms concerns.
But for sure - he would have gone in the transfer portal to get the big bucks - he was from a very poor family so that would have made sense.

Benny didn’t need to come back, he wasn’t very good and was already a problem, Judah and Q actually had a future. Red massively screwed up and showed that he favored being a players coach over being a good coach

This. In an untenable situation you have to do damage control and cut your losses or it drags down the whole ship. IMHO it was obvious *on the court* even that Benny had to go and the situation just sort of carried on like nobody wanted to actually deal with it. Probably the first real grievance I ever had with Red.

People are acting like the whole trio was unsaveable but you could see Mintz and Quadir wanted to win; if they saw Benny legitimately held accountable I suspect it would've steered their attitudes to some degree.

From Judah.

Presumably that he thinks Quadir was done dirty.

Side note, man, at the time I couldn’t believe that team didn’t make the tourney and I extra can’t believe it now.
That how i interpret it as well that he was done dirty…

we also haven't had a coaching staff who knows how to harness handfuls. Red doesn't seem like enough of a disciplinarian to send a kid home for 10 days.
Didn’t Red kick Benny Williams off the team and did not let him back on?

Seeing that pic reminded me of Petar. He's doing great in his own right. Starts at Long Beach St. Plays 31mpg. Averaging 15ppg, 6rpg, 2apg, 2spg. Shooting 55% including 38% from 3 and 75% on FTs. Good for him.
Also brought back up Justin Taylor, wow has he really done nothing at JMU

Lotta talent...Lotta toxicity.
