Quadir Copeland / Portal from NC State

Here is the abridged version of the chaotic dymaics of that team the first year under Red.

  • Red came in and wanted to instill some cultural changes, as a new coach
  • Many of the players couldn't relate to Boeheim, and were enthusiastic about the change to Red -- a much younger coach who they could relate to better
  • However, when Red made things more strict than under JB, several of the players chomped at the bit
  • These were not BAD kids, not doing criminal stuff, but they were passive aggressive in the locker room to undermine his authority, and didn't do what he instructed many times on the court
  • Outside of this group, the locker room also had one kid who was a true cancer, a goofball who got thrown off the team mid-season due to repeated incidents behind the scenes
  • We had a group of kids who were "with the program" -- kids who were good students, worked hard / did what they were told, in JJ / Maliq / Jesse
  • There were also a trio of kids who while not overtly disruptive, caused locker room problems due to not respecting Red and being increasingly defiant towards him -- Judah / Copeland / Bell
  • The latter trio was not particularly fond of the former trio, and this led to on-court issues in terms of sharing the ball
  • Copeland stopped going to class after December, and only later passed his classes due to a late push he made to get eligible to transfer
  • At the end of that season, Red helped encourage some of those players to leave. Judah went to pursue his NBA dream, Copeland hit the portal, Benny was kicked off the team. Only Bell remained from that group
  • The hope was that with the "bad seeds" gone, things would improve once Red got his OWN players, not ones he inherited from JB. Oops
I'm not sure the "issues" were all that serious. Using bell as the example, he is followed on social media by Judah and Copeland, but also by JJ and Maliq as well as other former players like Girard. He was popular and friends with all those guys. Had his on-court moments but was a good kid off it. Mike has a good article about him. He attended one of our tailgates and was a pleasure to speak with and very engaging. I don't doubt there may have been an incident, happens in all team sports, but I don't think it became anything serious.

Agreed. That's why Bell wasn't pushed out like the others. But he was part of that triumverate of players who WERE more difficult

could definitely be a pita on the court. part of his problem was how hard he'd be on himself too. he'd get too frustrated. never seemed relaxed.

Wow. He’s doing well. FYI, though, that’s Peter Carey in the photo with that 2024 Cuse squad, who went Siena for a year and then subsequently disappeared and apparently took a year off. Of course you’re talking about Petar Majstorovic from last season. Long Beach State stinks but he’s their second leading scorer. He could have had a role on this team backing up Kyle at center.
Wish we could have kept petar.

Quadir is the #15 PG in the country according to Evan Miya. Must be nice to be Will Wade
That's underrated. He's definitely top 10 PG in the country. Last 9 games he's at 16.1 ppg and 9.1 apg. Stud PG. We'd be in the hunt for an NCAA tourney bid if we had him instead of spazzmatic George. The thought that our coach looked at Qadir and thought Jaquan Carlos and Nait George would be better than him tells you everything you need to know about our coach's ability to judge and develop talent.

</end rant>

but he didn’t go to another p4 program. If he didn’t go to class for months, he dug his own grave here, had to go and no one else could take him either except for mcneese st & will wade. So I disagree with your last point. Though it’s true Carlos was a miss and George there is talent but hasn’t been coached well

Quadir and NC St have been in a slump having lost 3 of their last 5 games. Quadir seems to be the key to NC St’s fate. In those 3 losses Q has shot 8 for 25 (32%); 3 point shooting 1-8(12.5%); Assists13(4.2/gm); TO’s 8 (2.7/gm); Pts 24(8/gm)

Tough time of year towards the end, to have a slump with just 3 games left.NC State is now in a 3 way tie with UNC and Clemson for 4th place. They only have 1 team left though, Duke, in their final 3 games that are in the top half of the conference.

They’ve been overrated all season IMO. They have one win of real relevance @ Clemson and Clemson is closer to the bubble than safe at this point. The only other win of any significance is UNC @ home without Wilson and Vessar.

I'm really sad to see that NC State is struggling. ;)
They have now lost 6 of their last 7 games losing to Stanford today and didn’t hit 20 wins for the season. (19-11) Quadir had another meh game with just 2 assists but 6 turnovers but shot decently scoring 16 points but also fouled out of the game. Wonder if they will get a bid that looked a sure bet a month ago or do they need to win a game or 2 in the conference tourney?

I thought this was a classic case of Bad Q today.

Quadir Copeland is in the portal?

A lot of kids banking on the 5th year thing getting passed. Most importantly, he is listed as a graduate transfer which means he is getting his degree on schedule. Looks like his academic situation was salvageable after all.

Salvageable in what context? We already read that he was skipping classes and just did the bare minimum a the end of his time here to transfer.

In the context that it’s always possible to find courses you can take to earn some kind of degree after blowing off classes, yes, that’s college, baby!

What wasn’t salvageable was his relationships here and ability to be on the SU basketball team. You don’t keep a guy around who is disrespecting the coach and blowing off classes. That’s not a ‘well, let’s talk and fix this’ situation.

was a fan of quadir, but enough with the 5 year plans (and more). doesn't su football have a kid
in his 9th year or something like that? covid's done, i got it for that group of kids, but enough. 4 years,
and you're done. no more grad transfers. (exceptions for injuries only)

Makes sense for him to enter the portal. All these seniors have an outside shot of being grandfathered into the 5 for 5 rule.

Not saying they will, just that it is possible.

It’s definitely playing into how some programs are taking their time too. It’s a gamble sure but it seems it might trend to benefit those in year 5 now.. possibly.
