Quarter-pole evalutaion (part I): Report Card

DL: A

Not to nit pick the A-. 2 guys in the top 20 for sacks. That's an accomplishment.

You left out Nykeim Johnson, who has been the best player in the unit. Custis has flashed.

Riley and Butler are settled in as the #3 and #4 receivers, which is a good thing and a testimony to the development of the other two.

What about Taj Harris? Kid looks pretty good. And the jury is still out on what Sharrod Johnson and Queeley are capable of doing. Future looks bright at this positional unit -- they've performed better than a D-.

I'll disagree a bit.

If we are saying C/C+ is about average, I just think this squad has to be a D+ or maybe a C-.

Nykeim looks good in moments, sure. Same with Taj. Riley has had moments as well.

But Custis and Butler are severely disappointing outside of blocking (which isn't something to throw away, but it's also something that they should be doing).

We do not have a consistent performer, imo, that can compete game in and game out.

Looking at how good/bad FSU truly is, we could be in a for a serious wake up call coming up (not counting Clemson who is on a different level than the rest of the ACC). I think Nykeim will be that guy eventually. I think Taj can be solid. Right now though, we need guys to punch above their weight classes.

I'll disagree that Custis has been "severely disappointing."

Would I like to see more consistently / no drops? Sure, but he's been solid and a good contributor.

That's all I'm saying. Not sure that he's going to have an Etta-Tawo / Ish kind of year, first game notwithstanding. But severely disappointing seems to harsh for a guy who leads the team in receptions and has done a lot of good things. I agree that we all want more, but if he ends up being a 600+ yard receiver [which seems imminent], then that's pretty darn good for a guy who hasn't done much to this point in his career.

Usually I leave pole expertise to Millhouse, but I know my way around enough to chime in here. This is a one-third pole, not a quarter.

If you want to say it's going to be a 14 game season, I won't argue with you.

I think the analysis is a little harsh on the RBs and WRs, considering expectations for those groups, but I'm all for grading tough and expecting the best.

in addition, the quarter pole is when there is 1/4 mile left in a horse race, not the first 1/4.. Just to be clear... :):).

QB - B

*I've been a little disappointed with the throwing at this point. They've both been off and not consistent. A pet peeve of mine with Dungey is that I think he can be a bit of a ball hog. He needs to give the ball up a little more to the backs. for example he keeps 99% of the time on options when he should give it up. Can't take so many hits. It's not smart so points are deducted for not being smart. I was really encouraged by him running out of bounds and not lowering his shoulder for an extra yard last weekend.

RB: C+

*Getting better because of the line, but I don't think it's B quality yet. Bad reads, lack of vision.

WR: C-

*Our 2 outside guys would not start on most ALL past CUSE teams. They're average WRs at best and haven't shown and ability to make plays in the open field. When the ball is thrown to them you're not sure theyre going to catch it until they do. Our best play making WR is a 5-8 scat back. Love NJohnson and he's saving the grade from a D.

*encouraged by Taj Harris and think he'll be a #1 shortly. His 'flashes' save the grade from D.

OL: C+

*Clearly improved over last year but how much? There's been some shaky inconsistent play. As a team we have 1196 yards rushing at 5.3 a clip. That's outstanding. Given up 7 sacks in 4 games. That's good but need to take into account the opponent. I don't think the play has been consistent enough to warrant a B grade though.

TE: B+

*TE's have scored 3 or 4 TDs and the blocking has been good. I don't think we can ask for much more out of the position.

DE: A

*10 sacks, 11 TFLs and 23 tackles in 4 games btw 3 defensive ends. 8 of the sacks in the past two games. These guys are starting to feel it.

DL: A-

*Rushing Defense is collective but it starts here. 130ypg and a 4.0 avg is pretty good considering a few of the missed assignments by other positions allowing the 3 or 4 runs that comprise most of the yardage. No sacks from the group. 5 hurries.

LB: C-

*Whitner leads the team in tackles at 32. Amstrong and Guthrie are 3 & 4. 3 years ago, we had DB's as two of the top 4 tacklers. This group has made mistakes but has also made strides and played well at times. Considering where they started I think they've been respectable. 5 TFLs, 1 sack, 2 pass breakups, 1 INT. Room for improvement but they seem to be getting better every time out.

CB: B-

*They've been respectable. 255 ypg. 7.56 per. Btw Fred, Scoop and Trill, 35 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TFL, 2 breakups. They'll be test this weekend.

S: A-

*Cisco is the real deal at safety. Made some mistakes, immediate corrections. Huge potential here. 7 tackles, 4 INTs, 3 breakups. Cordy - 7 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 breakup. Both have improved btw game 1-4.

Specials - A+ all units.
*There's been 1 missed 40+ fg and 1 high snap. Otherwise flawless. Kicks to the endzone, punts inside the 20, hangtime, great coverage on both units.

Overall Grade:

B - with a lot of room for improvement.

4-0

I think the coaching grade is near an A to. Really from A-Z and everything these coaches are responsible for has been terrific.

WR are still building, but last yr we had 2 guys and Butler at times.. I think if Custis doesnt drop a couple deep balls he would be having an A+ yr, and I already think riley/johnson/harris are playing better than butler/riley finished last year and Sharrod has shown some nice things in very limited play. Consistent play is needed still though but the drops have gone way down since game one.
