Throughout the season, when the topic of internal dissension and "partyers" vs. "non-partyers" came up, you hinted that there was a lack of "senior leadership" from some players you might not expect. Was Chandler one of those players who didn't provide expected leadership? Was he in the party camp?

if I had to guess Chan just did his own thing to be honest...he turned a little hollywood with his bros fame

That is my guess too. Not a knock on him, but I would guess he is tired of being a heavily regulated college student with heavy expectations that go beyond the field.

Chandler Jones promised a ton of results (30 sacks quote) and was obviously very talented. Unfortunately he produced only a fraction of that promise. No evidence that he was a leader of men on a defense that desperately needed one. That's going to be his legacy at SU. Maybe he'll blossom in the pros.

spruill needs to be the leader out there on. He consistently brings it.

My only regret with Chandler is that we'll never know how great he could have been. I remember during his freshmen and sophomore years, he was touted as the next great one. "He'll be bigger faster and better than Art." And he had the size and skill-set to do it too...

But with him being injured half the year, we only saw glimpses of what could have been. Now that he's going pro, we'll never get a chance to see what he really could have done.

Unfortunately, I think Chandler is going to be remembered as an "oh yeah" player...as in "Oh yeah, I remember Chandler Jones"

Shamarko wants to make his mark as the next great SU athlete.

Good. He can start by being a Senior Leader during off-season conditioning.

I don't think Shamarko will have a problem with that... Dude's a gym rat

Chandler is going to be one of those guys that is a better pro than collegian, IMO. I'm not blaming the young man for getting hurt, but it is what it is, he never was able to live up to the hype, so we just need to replace a guy that had 10 sacks in three years of play. Louis Gachelin, a very underrated Orangman IMO, had nearly that his junior year playing DT. I think our re-commitment to bringing in that sort of physical talent to the inside of the DL will ultimately outweigh losing a guy like Chandler. Unless you are talking about a Dwight Freeney-like talent, give me stud DT over DE every day of the week. That guy will not only get his, but allow for a guy like Simmons, Sharpe, or Barnwell to elevate their play as well.

not sure i said senior leadership but did say the captains were probably too nice. i didn't view any of them as being in your face get your act together type kids. great kids and great off the field and in the classroom, but we may have lacked that captain that would kick your ass, and held the cred to do it.

Him I'm not worried about. As a team leader, he'll have to keep all the young pups motivated during the off-season.

Crume seems like the type that might end up being that way. Seems real easy going and likable, plays hard when he got his chances, but if he can be that rugged S.O.B. in the middle of the defense, it would certainly help. This is also why I think talk that Broyld can't be QB because of his mentality are somewhat bogus. That guy may not have the makings of a classic NFL leader, but he is an intense guy capable of cracking skulls. If he keeps his nose clean off the field, I predict a huge on-field leader, no matter what position he plays.

Do you know this or are you just speculating? My speculation from what I read in the newspaper is that Broyld is not a leader-type at all.
