Has the new OC said anything about plans to utilize the TE? For some reason, we unilaterally subtracted that potential weapon from our arsenal the last couple of years. I think that, even as a safety valve, the TE makes it easier for Schrader to succeed.

Let’s hope they give skcheadyer some security blankets

I don't know that he has said anything about anything. Has he been made available for interviews since being hired? I believe some people have said he has a history of using the TE more.

VA's starting TE had 44 reception for 598 yards and 8 TDs last year. That should answer your question.
What’s weird is didn’t Gilbert’s TE at USF have 40 catches for over 500 yards one year too?

I don't think we will see crazy production this year or next, but it'll be much more than we have seen.

I'd guess our leading tight end will get about 25-30 catches this year if their hands are up to it.

Once they recruit the type of tight end they want, it can go up.

I think Mang is more of a block / road grader type

Mahar may be the ultimate beneficiary.

If Benson was still here I could see him putting up those type of numbers. I agree that SU needs to find a TE for this system.

What’s the CFB offense we should model ourselves after in regard to TE usage?

I like UVA’s use of the TE in recent years, PITT did ok last year.

I’m not sure it will be the panacea folks have built it up to be, honestly

Uh, Ima guess UVA’s?

Since we just bought it and brought it to Syracuse this off-season.
(sans the QB, sadly, but with a better RB).

Soooo many great Pro & college QB’s have had a solid TE as their ‘wubbie’ who they can dump it off to when things go sideways.

You don’t think that’ll be a panacea for a passing-challenged QB like Shrader?

And we can have it both ways (that’s what she said!)
I’m not saying the TE is out in the pattern every down. But they shouldn’t just be a blocker 98% of the time either - that’s too one dimensional and easy to defend.

TE can block for 2 or 3 Mississippis, then release as a dump off option.

Perhaps our new OC sees talent in one or more of our current WR’s that can fill that role until we bring in a top quality TE recruit, in the future,
Anne used TE’s at UVA effectively.

IMO, using TE’s in our offense, like they are used in the NFL, is the way to go!

I agree with all that - just think the drum beat for using the TE has built it up around here when it will be like 2-3 passes a game for 4yds. Helpful? Absolutely.

How many times will we be needing him to stay in and block for our all-world RB?

I think you’re vastly underselling it.

Let’s say we get HALF the production that the UVA TE did this past season.

That’s 4 TD’s from the TE, when we had, I’m pretty sure it was 0.

How many 1 score games did we lose last year?
You don’t think an extra TD here or there woulda made a difference?

We were literally 1 TD away from 6-6, a bowl game, and a completely different narrative about how last season went.

I want to see the TE make those 3-4 catches a game.

I want to see some trickeration and misdirection.

We were soooo ridiculously plain vanilla and one dimensional last year.
And still managed to win 5 games, and be right there in a bunch more.

Imagine us using an entire playbook?
And the whole field?
And all the players on it?

The argument for a new offensive approach is a good one and one Dino has agreed with since we have a new OC. That the TE is the key to that is vastly overselling it.

We need every available option to fix what’s been wrong, including the TE. I think it’s the most obvious thing we haven’t been doing so it’s what has been pointed to - but there are a lot of things that could use tweaking and sometimes the less obvious unlocks more.

To be clear, I want to see us use the TE more and think there are benefits, just that it’s probably less important than getting GS humming or adding some more ways to get #44 the ball.

Eyes on the prize

We have a player who is only in his 4th year of football Mang who has just the size and speed to play the position. Just needs a good coach to get him up to speed, watching before games he seems to catch well.

Agree, I want the TE be used more in the passing game but to say the position is the difference in wins is over selling it. It helps the offense because it provides other options but defenses can take away that as well and force you other guys to make plays. We can have a TE catch 50 passes next year and still go 5-7.
