Questions from an LSU fan headed to Syracuse for the game

How is the new Krebs? I went after graduation and have a great memory of it, but the last time I looked it up they were still rebuilding.

The Bloodies are off the charts...good grub too.

Beer is seasonal. I drink it all 4 seasons. :D
Agree...i just think its good to note our local offerings as cajun country does with their hand grenades and hurricanes. In your defense though Octoberfest and pumpkin ales are ours to claim as well.

While not as majestic as Niagara Falls but half the time to get there visit Rochester and the Genesee Brew House in the city. The surrounding neighborhood is a little sketchy but not terrible. Brew House overlooks the Genesee River Gorge and it High Falls. Service is friendly, food is decent pub food and there are a bunch of beers (not just Genesee) to try. It has only been open a couple years and I finally made it there earlier this month. Indoor and outdoor dining, large bar, large well-lit parking lot and a roof-top patio. You can tore ur their museum and gift shop while waiting for a table or hang out on the rooftop patio or at the bar with sports on the big screens. The falls are lit at night and there is a large pedestrian bridge to walk across and get a better view. Like I said they aren't Niagara Falls but still a pretty good size and worth the visit, a whole lot closer and you do not have to worry about passports to get over to Canada. Syracuse has the original Dinosaur BBQ and Rochester has the 2nd of about 8 or 9 locations. Ours is located in an old train depot which also sits on the Genesee about 1 1/2 miles North of the Genesee Brew House.

FWIW I saw that the Adirondacks are at about 35% color for fall foliage so Friday may be a pretty decent trip from Turning Stone too.

Hit up Armory Square Thursday night or on Saturday before and/or after the game. Some of the bars are opening early to accommodate you thirsty Tiger fans.

Wow, lots of helpful replies. I am working on agenda now:

Thursday:

Arrive Syracuse noon Thursday, head straight to Dinosaurs for bbq. Head out to Fingerlakes after lunch, with side trip to Cooperstown. Look for Darwins on the way out which may or may not still be there.
Check in Casino at 6, craps tables for one hour at 7, grab winnings and head for dinner in Syracuse, wings at Shiftys.

Wake up at 7 on Friday and get waffles at Funk n Waffles (got to be great with that name). Round of golf after while ladies shop and blow our casino winnings at waterloo outlet. Utica pizza for lunch and then off to wine country for Sideways type excursion where we get only half plastered sipping wine. Back to casino to replenish money stash before heading out to Stellas for dinner. Then back to casino where wives go to bed and guys gamble way longer than planned, giving back winnings and losing equivalent of a small Chevy truck.

Saturday is game day. The crew is used to starting drinking early, but that's for a night game in Tiger stadium. With a noon kickoff, the adult beverage schedule accelerates to 9am, after another round of funky waffles. At ten am wander outside the dome looking for charitable invites to tailgates, Syracuse or LSU tailgates, preferably Syracuse because we didn't go all that way for alligator jambalaya. We can eat NY pizza and polish sausage at the game (or is that just in Chicago?)

Noon to three watch game and argue with wives about the risks and rewards of sneaking bourbon into the game (for them, not us). Win or lose, party continues after, that's how this crew rolls. Been to too many away games where LSU has lost to let the game spoil a good trip. Party in whatever random strip of bars can be found in downtown Syracuse after the game.

Saturday at 6 head back to casino and crap tables. Calculate how much trip money is left, develop a plan not to gamble beyond a certain limit, abandon that plan by 7 and then hit the ATM machines. Try out the steakhouse at the casino and room service some late night pizza.

Sunday = travel day home.

How is that? I hate to load up too much into a trip, but don't want to miss anything. The suggestions are much appreciated and I watched every one of videos macky44 put up. If you have a tailgate we can stop by, give me directions and we will come for a drink before the game if invited.
Love this. I grew up 8 minutes from the Casino in a small town between Rome and Verona, and the high school I attended is less than 2 miles from the Casino, so here are a few suggestions:

  • When you rent your car, make sure you take the toll devise (think they're called EZPass). That way you can travel Rte 90 without having to dig your pockets for change.
  • Friday - Skip the Utica pizza for lunch as you'll be backtracking (Utica is 35 mins Northeast from Casino and a sh!thole):
    • From Casino to Syracuse = 30 mins West on Rte 90 (this will be where Funk n Waffles and Stellas).
    • From Casino to Waterloo Outlets = 75 mins West on Rte 90 (might be best to go to Funk n Waffles and then continue on Waterloo Outlets). I assume you're flying in? If so, may want to skip Waterloo Outlets, unless you're planning to bring an oversize bag to take the stuff back with you). I fly back from the DC area regularly for games, so I'd suggest that if your ladies want to shop, your itinerary should be Stella's for breakfast on Friday and then just drive across the street to the Destiny ("Formerly known as Carousel Mall"). It's huge and lots to see/do as the mall itself has a go-cart track and other fun things to do contained within it's walls.
    • From there, head to the wineries along the finger lakes. Not really feasible to do 2 lakes in 1 day if you drink like I drink. Too many great wineries along each. Yelp can be useful to figure out which wineries to stop at.
    • Back to Casino and just enjoy yourselves. I know a few have said to head to Joel's Steakhouse (now called Stampede Steakhouse), but I've never really cared all that much for it. I would bet that you can find better food right at the Casino restaurants.
  • Saturday - Get up early and head towards the Dome. Unlike most college venues, parking is not overly convenient if you want to be close to the tailgating action. This board hosts a tailgate that usually attracts 100+ very dedicated and knowledgable Cuse fans. The gathering is at the corner of Standart St and Henry St parking lot. After breakfast, find a place to either street park or pay for a lot.
    • From Casino to Dome = 40 mins West on Rte 90.
    • Game Festivities - The Carrier Dome is one of only a few on-campus facilities that serves beer. So feel free to have some Dome Foam. If you're planning on sneaking any liquor into the game, I suggest you don't use any metal for your concealed substance. They wand people in some (if not all entrances). So be creative. This can and has been done. Btw... I love your ladies already. I'm a bourbon guy myself, so they're more than welcome to partake in sharing my bourbon pregame.
    • After the game, there are a few decent bars close by... Faegan's, etc. But I really enjoy Armory Square which is a short 5 minute drive. There you will find a few parallel streets with great bars (Kitty Hoyne's Irish Pub/Blue Tusk/etc.) and I think there are something like 30 different bars right in this very small area. Plus a few good restaurants to grab a small holdover for dinner or dinner itself. If you're looking for dinner ideas.. Kitty Hoynes has great Irish food and Pastabilities has great Italian food (if you go here, you MUST try the hot tomato oil sauce, you will never forget that sauce once you've tried it).
  • Sunday - Not sure what time you head out, but if it's after lunch time, I'd suggest lunch at Pastabilities (if you didn't make it Saturday) before heading to the airport. I'm telling you with certainty that the hot tomato oil sauce will be something you (a) won't want to miss; and (b) will forever remember.

Sticky Lips is also pretty good BBQ in Rochester; I think they have two separate locations.

Hey paper cat! Welcome aboard.

I had the privilege to live in good old Leesville, La. several years ago while stationed at Fort Polk. As I recall, their team mascot was a Wampus Cat. Please, sir, after all these years, please define a Wampus cat for me.

Most appreciative,

Northacuse
Not PaperCat but found this for you. Goes along with what I had heard years ago.

The Wampus Cat
A Tennessee Spooky Story

retold by

S. E. Schlosser

They say that the Wampus cat used to be a beautiful Indian woman. The men of her tribe were always going on hunting trips, but the women had to stay home. The Indian woman secretly followed her husband one day when he went hunting with the other men. She hid herself behind a rock, clutching the hide of a mountain cat around her, and spied on the men as they sat around their campfires telling sacred stories and doing magic.

According to the laws of the tribe, it was absolutely forbidden for women to hear the sacred stories and see the tribe's magic. So when the Indian woman was discovered, the medicine man punished her by binding her into the mountain cat skin she wore and then transforming her into a terrible monster - half woman and half mountain cat. Ever after she was doomed to roam the hills, howling desolately because she desires to return to her normal body.

A man was hunting one night with his dogs when they both whimpered and ran off the path. At that moment, the woods were overpowered with a horrible smell like that of a wet animal that had fallen into a bog after it messed with a skunk. Then something howled on the path behind him and the man whirled around, dropping his rifle. His heart pounding with fear, the man found himself staring into the big, glowing yellow eyes of the Wampus Cat. The creature had huge fangs dripping with salvia. It looked kind of like a mountain lion, but it was walking upright like a man. Then it howled, and the man's skin nearly turned inside out in horror.

With a scream of terror, the man leapt backwards and ran as fast as he could through the woods, the Wampus Cat on his heels. He fled to the home of a friend who lived nearby, and burst through the front door only a breath ahead of the creature. His friend slammed the door in the face of the Wampus Cat. Instantly, it started shuddering under the weight of the attacking monster. The man's friend grabbed his Bible and started reading aloud from the Psalms. Upon hearing the holy words, the Wampus Cat howled in frustration and then slowly abandoned its attack and went back into the woods.

The man spent the rest of the night at his friend's place. When he went home at daybreak, he found his dogs huddled in the barn, shaken but still alive. The man never hunted after dark again.

So what the hell was it doing in Loozyana?

Thinking of saving the guy some travel time since they really only have Friday as a full day saves a couple hrs round trip wise.

Epic.

May I ask how old you are? Feel free to tell me to off, just genuinely curious, especially since that could dictate what bars you would have more fun at

On your way out, stop by Beak and Skiff Apple Orchard. Super nice, I stopped there before leaving last Sunday and picked up a bottle of their vodka (they recently built a distillery on the apple orchard.) Great pie, donuts, fritters, and alchohal. Plus it's currently being voted #1 apple orchard in America. I highly recommend.

Just met an LSU fan in the Detroit airport on his way to Syracuse for the game and turned him on to this thread. Well done all. This is one of the reasons I love this place.

Forgive me if its already mentioned (not gonna read thru all post) but I dont recall anyone suggesting HEIDS in Liverppol one of the best (if not best) hot dogs stands in the nation .. make sure you have a coney (white hot) ... http://heidsofliverpool.com/
The best without question. Ive been to pinks in Cali, iconic stands in Chicago and nothing compares to Heids.

This guy never came back.. wonder how his trip turned out.

When we took a bus from Atl to Clemson last year, we lost a guy.

Literally had to drive back at 2am without someone. When he still didnt show up by noon the next day they had to call his family in Ariz who later that afternoon started a missing persons report.

But all is well that ends well, he took a cab home and charged up his phone to a million vm's. i heard he was safe, and havent seen or heard from him since.
