With Jones and Graham entering the draft ... we're at 59 scholarship players returning (barring any other departures or reinstatements).

Assuming that MyDavis and Broyld enroll in January ...

there's room for 24 newbies in August.

So we're looking for about 2 more commits, possibly more if the staff knows some HS seniors are going to go prep. Morgan, Standifer, and hopefully some beef for the DL.

I will bet that Marrone knew for some time that Jones was leaving. That would explain why he has always said we had a couple more schollies open when most of us thought we were full.

Who ever took over today for the Axeman is absolutely awful...he basically said that we are now awful on defense and just went from average to horrendous. He doesnt understand that kids get better in a year, and kids gain weight and do things to step up. The kid clearly hasnt played any sports and doesnt understand that losing 4 1/2 sacks in 7 games isnt that big of a deal. Now i love ChanJones because he has been great for us but its certainly not the end of the world losing him. This is why you recruit, because kids gets hurt and go pro.

I cant believe he has a job

and throw in the rumors about others considering bailing out, possible more.

Then consider the turnover as a whole, including graduations, and the number of new players/young faces virtually everywhere. Then cue the reports about how SU is young, lacks depth, wait til next year, etc.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Honestly, I just cant believe that everyone is freaking out about losing 6.5 sacks in the entire year from our starting DE's (Jones and Marinovich) and say that we might as well not show up on game days and just give the other team a TD on every drive, give our offense more time to see if they can put up points. Guys, we have recruited way better in the past three years than in the years previous. We will be fine and we should be getting better because we have young guys with experience. The one guy i hate losing is Philip Thomas but everyone else i think we can handle and replace fine. This is good for SU, gives us another guy in the NFL and hopefully he can stay healthy and put up numbers ala Freeney.

Imagine that number includes Phil T as well? Does it include Shamarko and has there been any clarification on his status?

I'm excited to see who replaces Marinovich but losing Chan hurts. If he was healthy and played all year his numbers would've been much higher.

I am assuming that Phil is gone, and Shamarko is returning (until SU or the Post-Standard says otherwise).

How can you assume his numbers to be much higher? He averaged less than 1 sack a game...if you take the same average we would average 7.5 sacks and that isnt even that great...a great DE puts up 10 sacks

I know Axe's fill-in host very well. He understands perfectly well how college athletics work and how much a player can improve between seasons. His point is that we went from a potential Freeney-esque season from Chandler next year to a big question mark.

Freeney-esque? Wow. Freeney dominated games with his freakish speed on and undersized (NFL) frame. He was and is a unique success story, and no one could stop him his senior year. Offenses were forced to change their schemes to avoid him.

I meant "Freeney-esque" to mean a dominant SU defensive end, not as a direct replication of Freeney's best seasons for the exact reasons Freeney was dominant.

Freeney-esque is fair. Probably preseason Big East DPOY. Star senior whose play elevates the entire unit. That happens across all college sports.

No one's saying he's as good as Freeney, c'mon.

I agree that Jones was a quality defensive player for us but in no way do I think he was a DPOY capable. But on the other note, he did not once say that he felt there is a question mark, he said there is no one to fill the void and that no one will step up. We have to look at undersized defensive end Simmmons, who I guess cant grow or gain weight or lift weights to get above his 230lbs frame.

Got it. I do wonder if Freeney had gone pro a year sooner, would he have been projected as a 3rd round pick? I doubt that because even after Freeney's amazing senior season some NFL scouts questioned his prospects in the NFL because of his size. Not all, of course, but Peppers was a considered a better bet, and Peppers turned out to be a very good bet.

59 scholarship players returning would mean 26 openings. Davis and Broyld would count against last year's numbers which means there is room for a class of 24 this year. We currently have committments from 17 kids. Would appear to be room for 7 more.

Morgan, Standifer, Manley, Zian Jones, Bryan Johnson. Who else?

we'll be able to bring in 25 in this class. not sure how many back dates we have if any. there will be some more kids with eligibility left leaving whether of their own choice or marrone asking them to move on. we also wont be at 85.

3 backdates.

Broyld, MyDavis, and 1 more (if someone can get here for January).

Those decisions have already been annouced. E is already taking that into account.

What announcements? Who did E remove from the list besides Jones, Graham and PThomas?

Senior day, the kids who had a year left and leaving were included.
