In no particular order.

This is the hardest hitting SU team I have ever seen - ever.

I love Ritchie Desir as PR - he catches with his hands like Shelby Hill and is fearless.

Omari Palmer was pulled after getting in the game early and getting false start on his first play - no tolerance for mistakes.

PT Gulley is a tough running back.

Montana was hit harder than any QB I can recall in a long time but showed great courage.

Montana connected on more prayers than I think I have ever seen.

Tulane was tough and aggressive - they put a decent amount of pressure on Hunt and Allen.

Horrible PI call against the Orange in the endzone.

I liked the blue helmets and the entire blue look a lot but I still prefer the traditional look.

What has happened to Ryan Norton on KOs? He used to put them in the endzone easily and consistently. Not this year.

Hunt continues to impress me with his calm demeanor in the pocket. I do have concerns about his ability to throw long.

But he throws a very catchable ball - more catchable than that of Allen or Nassib. For that reason his receivers rarely drop his passes - I can only recall two today - both by Kobena who should have two long difficult, but makeable catches.

This was the worst crowd I can ever recall at the Dome for football - downright embarrassing and inexcusable - SU fans are awful and should be ashamed for not properly supporting this team. We have to improve this now.

I really like this team. We have more athletes now than we have had for a long time.

I just don't ever expect to see another "Why don't Syracuse fans wear orange on gamedays?" post ever again. If the team doesn't even wear orange, why should the fans?

I think it was Millhouse who said SU fans aren't awful...there just aren't very many of us. And those of us who exist are so spread out throughout the country.

Norton put a couple in the endzone didn't he?

4th Q with Allen the line was lasker, miller, emerich, Palmer and Angueyman (sp). Knapp must be out for the season.

He put one through the endzone and one two yards into the endzone.

Otherwise he didn't make the endzone.

If I recall correctly.

Not good enough.

So, no redshirt for Lasker?

Ah, didn't realize that. Who am I thinking of maybe? Hayes?

Hayes and McGloster have not played. I don't think Burton has played either, although he's in the box score against Northwestern (he didn't play against Wagner or Tulane).

With the new rules, it is better to not have touchbacks and force a return. Your best kickers kick it to the 1 or 2 and your coverage team will stop them shy of the 25.

On kickoffs returned, the starting opponent field position was:
Vs. Penn State
PSU26, PSU18, PSU26

Vs. Northwestern
NU22, NU29

Vs. Wagner
W17, W26, W19, W25, W24, W21, W22, W31

Vs. Tulane
T46, T15, T18, T27

9 of the 17 kickoffs returned had worst starting field position then if they took the touchback.

Syracuse gained 49 yards while giving up 14 yards when taking out the Tulane return that was a gain of 31 and should have been stopped short if the tackles were made. Well worth the trade-off of having the opponent continuously start at the 25.

No injuries.

No TD returns.

I'll take the 25 yard line.

I think against Clempson we are going to see a whole lot of kicks out of the back of the end zone.

I like the review overall. I will respectfully disagree with the hard hitting, especially in the first half. We were not wrapping up anyone and our hits were just bumpers for the ball carriers. Don't get me wrong, the lines were doing their jobs and the offensive was chugging along, but our D stunk in the first half as far as tackling goes. We cannot make that mistake against Clemson and this is a Shafer team that KNOWS how to hit hard and make people regret they played the Orange. Our first half did NOT reflect that mentality.

You can't take out the long return. Missed tackles are one of the dangers of allowing the team to return the ball.

Which is fine, so think of it this way working with 5 yards either way (meaning opponent starting anywhere from 20 to 30):

1 out of 17 where opponent started better then their own 30

5 out of 17 where opponent started worse then their own 20

How many injuries or TD returns has SU given up this year?

Ugh.

I can't believe we are debating this.

If you can kick it through the end zone that's what you do.

That ends the discussion about returns and injuries.

That's what Tulane did yesterday.

And, yesterday Tulane had a pretty good return that could have gone for a TD.

You never want to take the chance that there will be a good return or injury.

See Pat O'Neil - please!

And let's move on.

if you ask the coaches they would take the 25 with no return without even thinking..

Norton can kick it through the end zone pretty consistently.

Game has changed. A quality kick return average used to be 20 yards, so you wanted to boom it through the end zone b/c the field position trade-off wasn't worth it when the kickoffs were 5 yards deeper and opponents started at the 20 regardless.

The avg kickoff return against Syracuse this year is 19 yards (363 yards on 19 returns). So, if your coverage team does its job, you gain field position if your kicker can generate both distance and hang-time. Norton's hang time has improved a ton since last year when he kicked them through the end-zone.

Do you want every kick returned by every team? No. And nowhere near what I am saying. But, if there is not a gamebreaker returning kicks and you have confidence in your coverage teams (which I think these special teams coverage teams are the best since pre-GRob), you can gain many yards there.

And, I think Syracuse employs this strategy. Norton could boom them through the end-zone (40% of his kick-offs last year were touchbacks as opposed to just 30% this year - 8 touchbacks on 27 kickoffs - not counting the kick out of bounds or the squib kick) with regularity, but he doesn't. I believe they are gaining yards through this tactic. And, it is the right move.

And, I believe the same from a returner end, always take the touchback b/c you are not going to return it to the 25.
