A few comments here acknowledge the slower learning curve for big men/ centers. Syracuse has a long litany of big guys who didn't blossom until their Jr. or even Sr. year. To dismiss, out of hand a players heart, commitment, talent, and potential is premature at best, and self serving, judgmental and mean spirited at worst.
Who is to know what developmental experiences a player has had which have impacted their demeanor? Who can be so sure of how a particular player handles being pulled early in a game for making a mistake. Who is to say that a player isn't giving it everything they've got yet they are subject to criticism for not measuring up to someones uninformed opinion?
I love this board and like anywhere you go you get the good with the bad. Some of the comments here, on the heels of a FINAL 4 APPEARANCE season, are really over the top. If ever there was a team that made the most out of what they were dealt, it was THIS TEAM. And yet some people come here and post that this guy didn't do this, or this player has a low ceiling, or this kid can't shoot as advertised. Or this kid will never make it in the NBA. It's beyond the pale that these KIDS are subjected to such harsh judgement. I question whether some of the harsh posters here have ever been to a Big East Basketball game. If you ever sit close to courtside the first overwhelming impression is these guys are HUGE and it is so PHYSICAL out there it's pretty much like a war zone. The pace is frenetic and these kids are expected to learn the intricacies of the offense and defense in short order. It's not so easy. Everyone isn't an NBA all-star.
Perhaps we are spoiled by the overwhelming success of the program whereby nothing short of winning it all is good enough. That's the same mentality that gets coaches like Ben Howland booted out of a program after taking them to 3 final 4s over 10 years. Or Tubby Smith being shown the door at Minn after revitalizing a dead in the water program. At the end of the day, it's the fans and the expectations they place on their players and their teams that contributes to what is wrong with collegiate athletics.
I'm proud of every kid on this team and what they accomplished this year. That includes the tireless efforts of the unheralded walk ons who also give so much of themselves so that we all can be proud of the Cuse Program. Sorry for the rant but some of the criticism of these kids has to be countered and shouldn't be allowed to go unchecked.
