Not surprised here with their play at Syracuse, particularly Rak.

Rak was highly overrated coming out of high school. Never should have been a McDonald's AA. First time I saw him play I wondered what everyone was thinking. He had zero offensive skill set in high school.

Coleman has been a little more of a disappointment. Maybe if I had seen him more in high school, I wouldn't feel that way.

If we could somehow combine Rak, Coleman and Keita, we'd have an AA center.

Rak for his shot blocking.

Coleman for his face-up offensive game.

Keita for his hustle and rebounding.

It's going to be center by committee again this year.

Sigh.

Coleman's face up offensive game consists primarily of lowering his shoulder the second he gets the ball, pounding the ball on the court and then usually getting stripped or stuffed by the rim.

Our big men are absolutely woeful.

I cringe every time he does that. The overwhelming majority of the time he's right under the basket. Just go straight up big fella. No need to dribble. The coaches have got to bet telling him that.

He's awful at using his physical dominance. The kid is built like a defensive end but has no clue how to use his physique and if anything he makes himself small. He's obviously dropped some baby fat but he still has no explosion off the court. I keep hoping the light bulb is going to go off and he'll make an adjustment. I have to assume he and the coaches watch the game tapes. So why aren't these bad habits broken?:bat:

The myth of Coleman as a highly-skilled offensive player is slow to die.

Maybe we'll see improvement by November. As of now, you've nailed it.

I believe there is hope. Normally we wouldn't even see him play at this point in the year. He hasn't been coached since the tourney and has clearly focused on conditioning. Roc will be a great defensive presence. With Ennis leading the way, this team seems like it will be a able to run a lot, which could lead to some offense from the bigs on the break. My opinion for this year is that if Coleman and Roc can develop enough to get to the free throw line and make their free throws (big if), that is where their points will come from.

With the zone, you need a defensively minded center. Coleman doesn't give us that yet. For that reason Christmas and Keita will log the majority of minutes in the middle.

Lets be honest, Keita is woeful too.
Keita plays decent defense. His biggest downside is that he needs about 30 more pounds on him to keep bigger centers from pushing him around. He is our best defensive center.

SU does a crappy job of getting the ball to ost centers in a good spot. The offensive failings of the centers are1 part positioning by the 5s, 1 part entry passes and 1 part system.
However, name the last offensive center to lead a team to a championship. SU can win with 12&10 from the 3 centers.

I love Baye's heart, but to say he has hands of stone, would be an insult to stone...
If Keita has hands of stone at this point in his career, which I don't think is true, then DCII has nothing but thumbs.

I'd argue that Rak is our best defensive center, that is if I can even call him a center.

Should we be at all worried by who it is that is coaching our, as others have called them, 'woeful' centers...?

If we could combine DC2 and Rak's best attributes and get that guy to play as hard and smart as Baye then we would really have something. Not sure how to accomplish that though.

From a shot blocking standpoint I'd agree. From ability to quarterback the zone it's Keita.

Anthony Davis 2 years ago?

I don't think he's our best D-5. But he's our best SB, and he's a stretch 4 (by edit, should be "5", courtesy Gabjon) with a slowly-developing offensive game. I do like his ability to hit the mid-range shot, and he has a jump hook. So there's reason for hope, as there is with DC2.

Anyway, it's August, so let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'm already counting TC out as a starter ... so I'm as premature as anyone else. But there's still lots of time.

Stretch 4? Lmao! Do you know what a stretch 4 is?

Sorry, I should have said, he's a stretch at the 5. Point taken Gabby. Keeping me honest. lol

there are few teams nationally that have our depth and talent. had they come to fruition yet, they'd be pros.
