Rakeem Christmas Gives Late Present to Young Fan

Great to see, someone take time out of their day to do something nice for someone else...really inspiring! :D

This is a great story...Of course, now any games we play in Delaware will be considered home games.:)

Next year they will be home games. Trevor Cooney is the GMac of Delaware. Which means that Maryland will be a home state based simply on location.

God Bless her. She spelled Syracuse wrong on the card.

I hate to sound like the grinch, but all he did was sign a stupid card and put it in a self addressed stamped envelope....lets not go over board recognizing this nice but very small gesture. You guys sound like you're ready to nominate him for saint hood.

There's always one guy...

I agree. It took him like 5 secs out of his life.

It's nice of him, but it's not like he went up and beyond the call of duty. Plus the call of duty was already low to begin with.

Different spin...there are hundreds of athletes in the NFL/NBA/NCAA/etc that do things like this every day - so you're right that there's really nothing out of the ordinary here. The sad thing is that as a culture we focus on "bad acts" by famous people and create the perception that the way to success is to be a self-absorbed, arrogant douchbag. It's bothersome to me that this is being made into a big deal...because we don't here about things like this enough. It may be we retain the stories of unacceptable behavior better than good stories like this; prior to this post if you'd asked me about this story six months from now I'd probably have forgotten it; if he'd punched a girl I guarantee I'd remember it. I think I'd rather we be minimizing this because we could immediately think of dozens of similar acts by athletes.

I think some of you are missing the point. It might have been an easy and simple thing for Rakeem to do, but the fact that he did such a simple thing for a fan still means something. He did not have to sign and put the SASE in the mail. He could have ignored it. Easily. But he didn't.

I'm not nominating him for saint hood, but lets not overlook that he did a good thing. I don't care how insignificant it may seem to some of you - I still think its a great thing for athletes, and especially for student-athletes, to do. Show appreciation for your fans because they will root for you and your success? ya.

Agreed

I think that was the picture... i originally thought the same thing about the 's' and the 'e' at the end. Thought she spelled it syracues.

but look at the 1st 's'... it looks the same as the 2nd 's.'
So unless she spelled eyracues REALLY wrong, i blame it on the quality of the picture.

Might have been more effort involved in his posting that he did it on Twitter than in actually doing it....just saying. Maybe I was missing the point, so was the point that he was being nice to a fan, or letting everyone know that he was being nice to a fan.

You have to remember, these guys have grown up with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc where everything is out there, everything is open. I would doubt this was done thinking "I'm going to show everyone how nice I am."

I was a resident advisor over the summer for something called summer start where kids get to start college early to get academic credit and live in dorms. Christmas, Cooney, And MCW were always on my floor hanging out with the other freshman. They Were all really down to earth nice kids especially Cooney. Rak was probably on my floor the most, seemed like a good guy and a guy that would do something like that to be nice not for the attention.

Would it make you feel better if you found out it was really a professional eBay autograph seller, not some adorable little girl doing something for her brother?

Good Story. If he played for Ohio State, Rak would have required a tattoo in exchange for the signed card.

Well if he played for Pay Pal Cal, there would have been gobs of cash in there to "help" him be so nice around the holidays to the fans.

I am sorry but what the hell is wrong with some of you. He signed a card that will make a young SU fan's day and yet some people on here still fault it to a degree. It's far away from being the most heroic act I have heard of however it still a great jester from a college kid

Truthfully the criticism wasn't intended to be a criticism of RAK. My comments started out making fun of the posters who are making this act out to be even remotely noteworthy.

I like when our players are good students, well mannered, friendly to fans and help little old ladies across the street as much as the next guy, but I just didn't think that we need to be celebrating the fact that he signed a freaking autograph. I mean it was one freaking autograph. Again, great that he is willing to sign an autograph, but really let's save the accolades for when they do something that truly requires them to do go out of their way a little bit like when Sean Williams rescued that cat from a tree. Now, that was a truly great jester.
