Random Game Thoughts

Just a few game thoughts.

  • HUGE road win today. Take care of business next Friday and let the chips fall where they may. That would be at least 8 wins. I have to get used to winning again.
  • Dave Clawson may be the whiniest b!tch coach I have ever seen.
  • A lot of people in the game thread hated the announcers. I actually liked them, especially the color guy. Had some funny lines, IMO. Sideline lady? Meh.
  • The refs today – well, they really need to go to remedial pass interference class.
  • When we didn’t see TD at the end of the 1st have to take a shot, I figured we wouldn’t see him in this game unless we were up by 4 scores. Then when they answered our 1st two scores of the second half, I was sure. Too much on the line, and HCDB knows ED knows how to manage a grind it out game. An air-it-out freshman QB, on a windy day, on the road, in a close game was probably not getting into the game unless absolutely necessary. And while ED was not awful by any means today IMO (as some in the game thread thought), I think HCDB didn’t think he was bad enough to replace. 275 total yards ain’t too shabby.
  • Love watching Elmore run – RUMBIN’ STUMBLIN’ BUMBLIN’
  • If I wasn’t emotionally invested in one of the teams playing, that was an immensely enjoyable 3rd quarter. Back and forth.
  • We thankfully didn’t see an attempted shovel pass today. They must have taken it out of the playbook (which doesn’t exist, of course).
  • On a day the D didn’t play all that well, they came up with 3 huge turnovers. Kudos. We are now +12 on the year. When was the last time we could say that?
  • The Pork Chop Biscuit by Bojangles looks absolutely hideous. And I love pork chops…
  • Sean Riley giveth, taketh away, and giveth again.
  • Several balls today Custis REALLY needs to catch. At least 3 drops. Not good.
  • What a luxury it is to have a kicker like Szymt. He just looks so effortless out there.
  • Was a bit puzzled by the lack of PT/targets Nykeim got today. Wonder if he’s banged up…
  • Dortch is one of those players I love to watch, and hate to watch. I was stunned when I looked at the box score and saw he only had 95 receiving yards. It felt like a 175+ effort I was watching.
7-2 is more than I could have hoped for (that Pitt loss still kills me). Take care of business next Friday and the buzz vs. ND will be incredible. LGO!!!
Agree on Clawson and, as much as the announcing crew romanticized Wake Forest, I almost spit out my beer when they quoted TLC's Waterfalls when referencing Wakes performance.

Dungey said WF sold out to stop the passing game. Nevertheless, I was surprised to see so few attempts down the field. And the swing pass thing sucks, so why go back to it a million times? Bad play calling.
I noted Ed wasn’t getting any balls over the top of guys and kept throwing them short making butler and Custis 2x come back to ball and couldn’t. He did enough to win though which is good.

The announcing crew wasn’t bad, they just talked about Wake 80% of the time.

“Cuse is driving, up by 2 TD’s. Dungey completes a 12 yard pass to Riley who is tackled by Masterson. Speaking of Masterson, let’s talk about him for the next 20 minutes.”

That’s pretty much the entire broadcast.

Speaking of Masterson...kid looked really good for a true frosh.

ED looked like a pitcher that didn't have his best stuff but fought through the game to finish with a win. I really wish he could teach all the runners how to read an OL for holes and how to break tackles/cut. I also wonder if there was any wind there? It seemed to be blowing in the face every other quarter.

Speaking of breaking tackles...I love how tough Riley is.

The D on 3rd downs, nice job gentlemen.

The announcing crew didn't bother me. The refs though, had a tough day. Like others have said, I have no idea what pass interference is anymore. On that note, the Wake OL can pay for new DL uniforms as they seemed to really like them...so much that they tried to rip them off the DL like teenage girls do a boy band.

It felt like we might as well have been playing in a storm with the way the wind was blowing and the refs inability, or refusal, to call PI for 80% of the game.

We won that game how we couldn’t last time we played them. Defense making plays and running the ball.

Spot on with Clawson, especially since he 2 early hideous PI calls that went his way! Every time they showed him he was crying about something, was awesome when Frederick paraded in front of them after the pick!
Also want to add Ryan Guthrie was a MAN! seems to be getting better every week.

That sideline pass...uuuhhhhgggg!!!!! I freaking hate that play and many teams run it. The only time it really works half way decent is when it is a quick snap. Can't do the SU thing and have everyone up to the line then back off, look to sideline and then run that play. It mostly goes for a loss in that situation. I am not fond of the play calling this year but SU is 7-2.

Except that first screen that sailed five feet over Riley’s head.

i was a little surprised we didn't see a little DeVito. esp given the coach's comments at the half.

Why? As Dino said in his presser, they made the decision they were going to go all in with the run game and in particular Dungey. If we’re going to do that you want Dungey on the field. That one series where he had 2 long runs on QB draws then the 26 yard TD run showed he made the correct call.

The refs and Clawson got together and said “let’s make it really hard for them to throw the ball”

We’re averaging 43 ppg.

The SU radio announcers, (Matt Park and Adam Terry, who is a very good replacement for the late Chris Gedney), talked about the wind numerous times. It wasn't just whether we were playing into it or had it at our backs. The wind was enough to knock down or carry the passes where the QB didn't want to throw them. it wasn't a hurricane but it impacted the game nonetheless. the team that ran the ball better won and that was us, (which it would not have been in prior years).

Orange is the new slow this year. The constant back-offs ruin the impact of trying to wear out the other team with tempo. Can't the QB and RB call things at the line based upon what they see?

well i was surprised becuz he said at his halftime exit interview they needed more from the passing game.

ergo...my surprise no devito. that's all.

This is a random observation I had at the game (didn't know where else I should post this) but Dino, at the end of the game, gave an over the head clap to the fans as a small thank you for the turn-out. He definitely seemed pleased with the fans that made the trip.

Yeah, I know. I just think that play is a bust 80% of the time. Especially the way SU runs.
That play will work next year with Tommy as his ball will get there sooner.
