At this point in the season, it's hard to get excited for games against such bad teams. I had a little excitement for Northeastern because I went to school there, but that was about it. Northeastern is ranked 210 by NET and 209 by SRS, with Stonehill 336 and 331 respectively.

Of the two, Northeastern was the better opponent, but still not expected to be a challenge.

Northeastern was a brutal game, both to watch and I'm sure to play. Northeastern committed 31 fouls, had three starters foul out and sent the Orange to the line 48 times. Syracuse made a respectable 71% and won the game over the Huskies by only 8... This could easily have been another game we lost and mourned because of our bad free throw shooting. Instead, we won by making 21 more free throws than our opponent. Our performance at the line skyrocketed our free throw shooting to only third worst in the college game.

While you can't get excited about winning by 8 against a team you were much more heavily favored against, I guess it's nice to know we can grind out a miserable game like that one...

After Stonehill, we're probably back to last in the country in FT percentage. 14-29 is just awful at the FT line.

One thing I have been frustrated with Red's teams is we have periods where we just lose focus and give up runs to either let teams close the gap or let opposing teams turn close games turn into blowout losses. Northeastern was more of the same.

At 6:33 left in the second half, Kingz scored to push the lead to 14 at 74-60. It looked like we might push the lead out to a respectable margin at that point, especially with the starters from Northeastern in foul trouble or already fouled out. Instead, we gave up a Northeastern 4-8 stretch of three point shooting to close the margin of victory to only 8. Northeastern only made 8-23 from three in the game.

Stonehill was also a foul plagued game, with the Orange getting fouled 25 times by the low major team. It looked like it could become a brutal game as well.

But oddly, something great happened... Something unexpected. Syracuse put a team away with a late run.

At 8:51 of the second half, Stonehill scored to narrow their deficit to 11 at 52-41. Anybody watching the Orange often enough these days probably expected another annoying nailbiter vs a bad team. But instead, Syracuse closed out with an 25-7 run that pushed the margin of victory to a respectable amount and even gave Red the chance to play Fennell, Diawara and even Lobdell tonight.

Much less disappointing than we have come to expect from these Freemanless Orange.

The cupcake season had one major disappointment, and a fair amount of mediocrity. Overall our Out of Conference schedule was right where a lot of us predicted.

I'm happy OOC is over.

Looking ahead, Freeman is expected to be back (fingers crossed) for our next game, and it's on to conference play. I think the team is in a position where our fate is very much in our hands.

The ACC is going to give us lots of chances for quality victories, and the boys have been through the crucible of Vegas and they aren't out of it yet.

On forward, to bigger and better things!

Starting with 10-3 Clemson at home, who could very well be a Q1 win by the end of the year...

Noticed that in the last 8-10 minutes of the game it was primarily the starters. Subs were limited. If you look at the minutes just about all starting guards played 32+ minutes. We need Donnie back to get a scoring threat from the 4 & 5 slot.
Yeah, Red needs to ride his starters and top 8 guys and has to stop playing guys like Fennell and Zephyr at all, unless it’s extreme foul trouble. I know he has to play Souare a little bit to give Kyle a breather, but he shouldn’t be getting more than 5-7 minutes, and he should be bringing him in to play alongside the starters, not in a wholesale substitution with Kiyan and Betsey.

I predicted we’d go 10-3 in the non-conference. Was hoping for 11-2 (which could be our record if we’d actually hit a few more free throws against Houston and Hofstra). Now we’re behind the 8-ball at 9-4 with a q3 loss to Hofstra and not enough blowouts in the non-conference hurting our NET. We have lots of work to do (and wins to tally) in ACC play. A major positive is that our top player Donnie Freeman will be returning, which should theoretically make us a lot of a better team. We’ll see. I don’t have much faith in Red to scheme and teach a decent offense and sub with any coherence, but there is talent on this squad to win some big games.

minutes are going to be interesting when/if Donnie comes back.

I agree Souare gets about 8 max.

Sadiq, Betsey and Kian will be the interesting ones to watch. Especially if we don't play Donnie at the 5.

I think the last 10-12 minutes of the 2nd half is what we can expect to see going forward as far as substitution pattern. With Donnie coming back (not expecting much until mid-January) Red will limit playing time to Anthony, White, Soure and Betsey in that order. Last few games White has been pressing to do more in the offence and has not been as effective. Coming off the bench we will see an improvement. I think Betsey will be better off as well with more limited role (not defensive). All of it is an improvement once Donnie comes back. Lets hope this is the end of the injury bug for SU that we have seen the last 3-4 years

GO CUSE

Personally for me 8 is too many for Suare. He got 4 against Tennessee, Kyle played 36, that's what I'm looking for. Maybe against the lower end of the conference it won't hurt us and his defense will help but a Clemson will eat Suare alive.

If he is health (aggressive) enough to play the 5, I expect Donnie to play 20-25 at 4 and 5-10 at the 5. Souare spot duty only.

Agree totally. I think we need to reduce the rotation a bit and be more strategic about how we sub. It just about made me lose my mind in the first half last night when we put in so many bench players at the same time. Eventually you have to pay attention to what's not working.

No Zephir, minimal Souare minutes, and Betsey/White play based on who’s performing better. Neither have earned extended time yet.

The first substitute of the game in Stonehill was a glaring example. The team started good offensively and was up 10-12 points and Red unnecessarily subbed 3-4 guys out, including Nait George who had 8 points and a couple assists, and including William Kyle in exchange for Souare who gives us nothing.

Exactly. That was my "What are we doing here, Red? Haven't we seen this episode before? "

diawara looks like a much better player than suaore to me

his size, his movement and alertness

he had 2 rebs in 2 mins vs stonehill

can anyone tell me the argument of why suaore plays over him?

Preach. 100% agree

Agree about Diawara over Souare. But nothing makes sense with Red’s game management and substitutions. I believe we lost 8 games at end of last season despite double digit leads. Neither he or his staff can get consistent effort from the players. I feel that this stems from the multiple empty trips on the offensive end and their inability to secure defensive rebounds. It is difficult to maintain defensive intensity when you repeatedly screw up on the offensive end

in fairness, Jesse's shot actually looked like a shot
Even if he missed, it would have been hard to be mad at that shot. If memory serves, there was like 1 second on the shot clock. I mean, you can be angry at the situation that left the ball in his hands beyond the 3 point line with 1 second left, but not the shot itself.

I got an Iggy because of that shot, and it was exactly how I thought it might go...
