Our defensive intensity has evaporated. It really shows itself in one key area. Hedging off picks. We were hedging like madmen the beginning of the season. Guys would come off a screen on the left side and still have a hedging big man on them 20 feet later. Yesterday, it felt like the most perfunctory of hedges, maybe an arm wave, then a clear line to the basket.

This game was over with 13 minutes to go. The clincher was an 8 point Luka Bogavac run in about 100 seconds of game time to push the lead to 26. Each individual could choose their own time to throw in the towel, but that was mine.

Carolina actually pushed the lead to 32 at about the ten minute mark of the second half. They nearly had us doubled up... What happened next would have really pissed me off if I was a Carolina fan. That huge NET reinforcing margin was allowed to shrink to a 10 point margin of victory. The only thing that matters these days is beating bad opponents by big margins, and UNC failed to do that.

Anyone who bet Carolina on the over at 10.5 should sue.

There wasn't much good about this game. One thing you could point to is that the second team put on the press and we beat their second team and walkons by 22 points in 10 minutes of game time. Snarkiness aside, Carolina is excellent at avoiding turnovers, only giving up 9.5 per game (19th in the country in avoiding TO). Our press forced them into 6 in that last 10 minutes. We had them rattled and forced them to put guys back in the game who had run up the score in the first place.

I hate that we don't use the press, even when everything else isn't working, until the game is functionally over. If we had started pressing early, maybe the worst possible end result happens and we wind up down 30? Some of our guys just can't score in the half court, but they can if they get unobstructed line to the basket. We should press more often, get teams rattled, and get our guys who are very comfortable in transition offense some chances to score in transition.

Our depth is a significant strength, we don't use it in productive ways.

Caleb Wilson is really good. Freeman played him even if you look at the box score, but that would be ignoring that Caleb's team won the first 30 minutes by 32 points.

I am ready for a new coaching staff. Red's big idea against Notre Dame was to bench the best player and call it a "matchup" issue. That one might become a joke for years. As in "x player is really a discipline problem, currently under indictment for drug trafficking, but we are benching him because we don't like the matchups" type cynical humor.

Red had a great off-season, where Red seemed to have filled in all his biggest program weaknesses. But during the season, he has demonstrated he can't adapt in games, create game plans or develop players enough to run a winning ACC program.

i tuned in knowing we'd lose and stuck it out. (plus it's one of our few espn games)
only interesting part of that beatdown was watching the caleb wilson and donnie freeman show. if there was a pay per view one on one game to 20 i'd tune in to that instead. notice that shrek donkey jay williams didn't include donnie in his draft picks .
and did i hear that duke was playing UNC this weekend ?

The defensive slide has been so disappointing.

We’re going to get beat by any half decent team. We made a run, like you said, against the guys they had out there to run out the clock.

It’s over. Red, the team, JW, even GMac and JB are going to be answering questions about this situation until they relieve Red of his duties and it’s going to be annoying.

For the game, why did Red take Donnie out at the end of the 2H? Why didn’t he continue to go to him in the second half?

He only took 14 FGAs for 23 points. That is only one more FGA than JJ who had 13 points. Kingz had 12 FGAs (15 points) and then Kiyan was 10 FGAs for 10 pts. Kiyan’s tunnel vision is absurd at this point.

But it doesn’t really matter anyway. UNC was going to pull away with their main guys no matter what bc we can’t stop anyone on D. Our guards can’t play D. Kiyan doesn’t even try to play D. The team isn’t engaged in D overall. It’s over.

Kiyan leads the charge on tunnel vision and defensive effort, but the whole team is a bunch of "I want shots" guys. It looks like bad AAU. Nobody makes basketball plays.

Whichever gm drafts Wilson in the top 5 is gonna be clawing and scratching to keep his job.
I don't know, I saw in Wilson a guy listed at 6'10, 215 pounds with wing type skills that was able to bang with William Kyle who's around 235 to 240, and Wilson won a couple of those battles. If Wilson is already that strong, once he actually adds the weight and strength that his frame can support, I could see him as a very good NBA starter.

Yeah I think he will definitely find a role in the league. Needs to work on his shot but kid has game.

Under JB, if we got down 5/7 points he would throw a press to try to get us back in the game, this occurred all season long. Now we wait until we are down 30 to try to get back into game, or never even try to get back into the game. No timeouts when teams go on runs at end of half’s….Really poor game management. Don’t wan’t to discuss line changes with all 2nd team guys playing at the same time.

I think you are misrembering the use of the trunk monkey

I, too, am ready for a new staff. In the past few years, we have been destroyed by good ACC teams.

The players do not respect this coach. It has been obvious for years, but especially in Red's year 1, where they just ignored him completely and did whatever they wanted. Not surprisingly, that was Red's best year.

It's because we don't run sets on offense, which has been said multiple times in different threads on this forum. It's ISO ball and if the clock is running down a big man comes up and sets a pick.
