Randy Edsall's fingerprints are all over (nearly) every great Syracuse football memory

Great article. I didn't realize how many bigtime recruits he brought in. I'd love to know, and i'm sure the story is gone with Mac, why he was not selected over Pasqualoni. Why did Crouthamel have faith in Paul over Randy.

When Coach Mac told Jake that he was taking the Patriots job, Jake poked his head out of his office door, looked to his left, and saw Pasqualoni first.

If Jake had looked right, he would have seen Edsall first.

;):cool::p:rolleyes:

If he looked forward it would have been DeLeone?

I hate to say this now but the one guy who su could had dream job was Edsall. He wanted it bad if I recall. I think he woulda been better than coach p cause as I have said before coach p is a great assistant. Not much of a head guy though. Just sucks he left a team like uconn the way he did. That was without a doubt the most classless coaching moment I can think of at this moment. Everyone makes mistakes and as a former Orangeman I can’t hate on him but I will for this game.

151-94-1 is Paul's record as a head coach.

That's significantly better than Randy's.

It sounds like Randy was a huge recruiting force in the late 80s/early 90s. The McPherson era, at the end, was running on all cylinders. But to suggest we're going to be better than Paul was in the 90s is crazy to me.

I think Pasqualoni did as well as job as possible to transition from McPherson in the early/mid 90s. The engine idled when the university didn't realize the arms race happening around them. I think Syracuse admin assumed our futuristic dome was all we needed to be in lockstep with other schools who started adding more to the football operations.

All that Cuse 90's gitz and he goes on to embarrass himself in leaving UCONN the way he did only to return to UCONN after being fired and then throwing his players and P under the bus

weak sauce randy

Would've neen interesting to see if anything would've been different with him. With how stodgy he seems now, it sounded like he had an engaging personality back then.

I actually know this. I worked with randy's wife a number of years ago. Jake wanted to make sure that George would be the OC. Paul was A-okay with that. Randy, not so much. Plus, George might not have wanted to work for Randy.

As an aside, randy also thought he landed Billy Owens for the hoop team because he got Michael to go to Syracuse

Uconn didn’t have our talent. I just thought coach p was a very conservative coach and it didn’t help us. My opinion
P was a mad bomber next to Randy.

He's not wrong ... But if I recall the story right, DC basically threatened his life

Back then nobody took OC's over DC's as head coaches. It was the golden age of the meathead, and Coach P certainly fit the bill.

Yeah but P wasn't the DC, he was the linebackers coach, I remember that shocked just about everyone. There was definitely some shady stuff on that hire.

Did Mac take anyone with him to New England? I’m surprised none of those guys got a shot w the Patriots.

Edit: I think he took Ivan Fears who is still w the patriots

Coach P was 9 years older with more experience including prior head coaching (34-17 record) besides defensive coordinator experience and was 42 years old. Remember Randy was 33 years old and the DB/RB coach when coach Mac left with all his experience at SU and with DB’s and RB’s.

I never said Randy was expected to get the job. I believe it was between DeLeone and Gerber. I'm not arguing who was the best man for the job, nor do I remember the details, but I do remember everyone surprised P got the job.
