[QUOTE="SWC75, post: 4211351, member: 289"] There was much discussion this year of the relative value of a great regular season vs. a great post season run. Obviously, we’d like to have both. I decided to try to come up with simple formulas for comparing the two to rank SU’s seasons. The regular season formula was easy: 25 points for finishing #1 in the final pre-tournament poll, (which isn’t necessarily the final poll or even the one before that), 24 for second, 23 for 3rd, etc. For the NCAA tournament, (the only one I considered), my first concept was to give the national champion 64 points, the runner-up half of that, the final four losers half of that, etc. down to 1 point for losing in the round of 64. But that gives a team 16 points for making the Final Four, they same amount they would get for finishing the regular season ranked #10. That did not seme to me an equivalency in terms of impacts so I adjusted it to subtracting 8 points from the runner up down to the Sweet 16 and then dividing by 2 after that: 64 for the champ, 32 for the runner up, 24 for making the Final Four, 16 for the elite 8, 8 for the Sweet 16, 4 for the Round of 32, 2 for the Round of 64 and 1 for the ‘First Four’. (I’m ignoring consolation games.) Even if the rankings weren’t a top 25 or the tournament a 64(8) team tournament, I’ll use the same system, since I’m counting from the top down. The NCAA tournament began in 1939 but the first AP Poll - writers, (the one I’ll use), began a decade later, for the 1948-49 season, so I’ll start there. (From 1960-61 through 1967-68, the AP ranked only 10 teams, the UPI- coaches 20 teams. I’ll honor a UPI ranking for the second ten for those seasons.) From As a shorthand, the latter year of the season will be used: 1948-49 is ‘1949’.
